while lukas has overall good morals for the most part, he is very much a more neutral member of the deliverance, and i feel as though it’s an important aspect of his character to look at. while he is supportive of alm, he serves as more of an adviser when alm seeks out knowledge—compared to gray, tobin, and faye, who are a part of the deliverance because of alm and provide unfaltering moral support, lukas’ intentions are more for the sake of zofia and the safety of the world than anything else. after all, he was forced into the ways of war by his family—he even admits in supports with forsyth that he prefers quiet days curled up with a book, not combat.

basically, what i’m getting at is that his choice to be in the deliverance is almost strictly political, and that his support for alm comes from more of a place of logic than compassion. he DOES care for alm, but he cares more for the future overall. when you think about it that way, it’s no surprise that he was so quick to welcome tobin, even though he only initially wanted to fight to support his family monetarily.

EDIT: i forgot a detail, my bad! anyway, it’s also important to note that my rendition of lukas is also very politically radical in some respects—specifically meaning he shuns classism and favors equality. it’s why he approaches the villagers and commoners in the army without judgement. it really grinds fernand’s gears for obvious reasons.

“Lukas? Oh, what is it- Gah!
Her fellow soldier digging into her hair certainly caught her off guard. Eyes widending momentarily before he pulled away. His fingers flicking something off into the distance - leaving her momentarily confused.
What had he just-
“In my hair? What was it? Do not spare me the details, Lukas. The lady can take it.”

admittedly, handling the bug had been slightly unpleasant. it was difficult to be fazed by much these days, though, particularly when they had seen so much bloodshed together. clair AMUSED lukas, to say the least. unlike fernand, she was innocently fascinated by the commonwealth, and obediently listened to clive’s sermons. still, he had to wonder: were her intentions for clive or for herself?

lukas cleared his throat to suppress a rare chuckle at the dramatic display, but it did nothing to hide the gleam in brown eyes. “if the lady insists---it was a bug. a beetle, to be exact. i made sure to crush it beneath my boot after i removed it, lest it attack you again.”

♡ — She was a servant to faith. She had never wavered in her path, she thought, and she worked to hold the strength to care for others and ensure they did not die under her protection even before she had set foot on a battlefield directly. Still, as of late, her mind was clouded over.
When she approached Lukas, her solemn expression was plain as day, finding little need to hide it from the soldier, and her voice was somewhat quiet, wispy even, as she looked to him for guidance.
❝ Lukas… I’ve seen how the Deliverance        sings praises of you and leans upon you,        so may I ask for your time too ? Only        just a bit, I promise…!

anyone could sense the woman’s distress from miles away---it was evident in the tight line of her mouth, the mournfulness of her eyes. lukas had unintentionally gained a talent for being emotionally perceptive. he supposed it might be a way to cope with what clive had once described as coldness, but his frosted heart refused to believe that he could be ENTIRELY cold. such nurturing instincts, after all, had to mean something.

it secretly pleased him to no end that the villagers in particular so frequently sought out his counsel. he would never have a leader’s charisma, but he DID possess an adviser’s level-headedness. surely tatiana had approached him for this very reason, and so lukas smiled at her---an unassuming expression, but a pleasant one nonetheless.

“of course you may,” he replied, dark eyes meeting the saint’s. “what is it that’s troubling you? i’m sure i can, at the very least, ease your troubles by lending my ear, tatiana.”

“Mmm, yes you looked to be deep in thought. No doubt you were preparing for our next battle. Tell me, will you have Sir Clive and Lady Mathilda holding the rear with you?”
Oh, perhaps she was being too much of a tease now. It was not often she let her more blunt and mean spirited humor show. Such personality quirks meant to be left in the past but at times still clinging to her like an inner demon
“You looked almost pained to look away. Do not worry, Lukas. They may call me a gossip but I am not one to share matters of the heart to others.”

A glance of her own was spared to the pair of soldiers in the distance. Both smiling and looking so lovingly at one another. No doubt the knight at her side only wished to join them. To have them look at him the same way they did at each other.
“What is your intent, Lukas? Do you plan to keep this little crush bottled inside or will you take action? I will pray to the Mother if you require confidence.”

an incredulous look crossed over him, residing in widened eyes and lifted brows. silque really WAS something, wasn’t she? though she was certainly kind, there lingered beneath the surface a playfulness that surprised lukas time and time again. perhaps it was due to his own nature to be DRY---his dullness did not match her liveliness well, and he often wondered why she bothered with his company.

“i really think you’re mistaken,” the knight insisted with a chuckle, shoulder lifting in a half-shrug. “there are things on my mind, but nothing romantic, i can assure you. pleasant as it must be, it would act as an interference on the battlefield. maybe after the war.”

he wouldn’t admit that he envied those longing looks shared between the lovers, or that he wondered what it might be like to feel those same flames of emotion. lukas was level for a reason, but sometimes it didn’t seem worth it. “how are you doing, silque? resting between skirmishes, i should hope.”

“milady, i ask that you hold still for just a moment---” lukas gingerly reached a hand forward into a sea of blonde, plucking out the beetle that had flown into it and flicking it to the ground before she could take notice. they didn’t need a SCREAMING ROYAL alerting the enemy, now, did they? “ah, there. you just had something trapped in there. i’ll spare you the details.” a quick smile, and he was walking at clair’s side again, thankful for the gentle breeze that stirred in the air.
