Ahh so happy to hear you’re thriving!! I’m a year younger than you and I remember seeing your posts about wanting to keep music in your life but not make it your major or anything and that was exactly what I wanted to do, so I thought if you could do it I could to! Lol all these years later and I still read your blog name as orchestra ordie

Ahaha thank you!! I hope you were able to keep your instrument in your life :) and yes it was a flawed blog name to begin with 😂

HELLO I STILL EXIST. Yesterday I had a crisis because I realized I hate Instagram and miss having this blog. I feel like everyone on IG has an agenda and it makes me sad. So here I am saying hi to my old pals on here. I’m now 22, and GRADUATED from nursing school ?!!!!!! I still play the cello and now I play the banjo too sometimes. And I’m going to be a psych nurse starting this summer :-)

Hi friends I still exist & now my fam has 3 dogs! that’s been so so fun.

Life update: still in nursing school, still playing cello. Saw some babies be born and gave lots of newborn baths this semester. Playing in a piano trio and a string quartet, concert this sun!

I post regularly on my Instagram @abby.inprogress if you are interested in following along!!

Hi I’m a music graduate (musicology) and have just started cello! I’ve never really played a classical instrument before and was wondering if there are any tips or hints to starting? How do you improve intonation? Thanks! Love your blog!

Hi, so excited to hear you’re starting cello! You definitely chose the best instrument!!

I know some teachers advise against this but I think tape on the fingerboard for the first few months is really helpful to visualize the intervals on the instrument. As long as you don’t become dependent on them and remove them once you’re aware of the basic intervals, I think it’s a good idea.

Scales are the single most important thing you can do for yourself when learning a string instrument. They’re the foundation for everything you will ever play! Start by learning all of the 1 octave scales and really being confident in your intonation and then as you start to learn higher positions definitely move on to 2 or 3 octave scales! You can use a drone (on your phone, tuner, youtube) in the key of whatever scale you’re playing to make sure your intervals are spot on!

I was not self taught so I’m not super familiar with learning on your own but hopefully this is a bit helpful at least!

Do you ever miss high school?

hmmm. I think for my first two years of college I definitely did. I had a hard time adjusting and really missed my close friends from high school and my family. It’s now my junior year and I’m finally feeling settled, but yes I do miss high school sometimes because all of my best friends go to colleges around the country which has been tough at times. I also miss being able to dedicate more time to cello!!

Ahhhhh life update nursing school started back up this week but my lease doesn’t start until tomorrow so I was living at my boyfriends all week bc my house is 2 hrs away from my school. But my cello doesn’t arrive until the rest of my stuff arrives at my apt sooooooo ofc I found his cello and practiced on that tonight. Perks of dating an ex cellist!

Sometimes you can’t practice on your normal instrument or can’t practice at all. Whether it’s some life circumstances, lack of access to your instrument, or whatever. That will happen and that’s okay. But what you can do is do your best with what you have (like setting up your music in your suitcase (!!) or even just shadow practicing)

What is the piece you are playing in /post/183573327127/well-you-can-always-count-on-ensemble-sight It's so beautiful!

If I’m thinking of the right post i believe it was the Beethoven ghost trio!

I’m having an acute cello crisis and I need help rn pls respond

I am trying to change my strings and I changed all of them but the D string bc the peg WONT budge... guessing wood expanded from the humidity / heat? But it’s been stored in a room with AC so I don’t know. But I’m stressed because now it’s like half undone and the string is loose but I can’t get the peg to move any more and I need to practice for my sisters wedding (1 week away)!!!!

Trying to avoid a visit to the luthier bc money and also time....... does anyone have any quick fixes for stuck pegs????

Thx for the responses! I left my cello in the coldest room in our house for a bit and it worked

I haven’t posted in a while! Life update:

My sisters bachelorette party two weeks ago was an absolute blast. It was a 3 day thing in a modernized historic air b&b and we spent a lot of time downtown!

Since then I’ve been working 32-36 hrs a week as a nursing assistant and I think it’s been a good amount for me. I absolutely love love love my job. I’m going to miss all of my patients when I go back to school.

Outside of work I’ve been playing a lot of cello in prep for my sisters wedding. I’ve got 7 pieces in all to prepare for the wedding between the seating, processional, and recessional. I’ve also been writing and practicing my maid of honor toast which is terrifying but has been fun to write!!

We have a vegetable garden that has been pretty fruitful this year and it’s been really fun to cook with foods that I grew myself!

If you want to see more of my daily life and not just cello posts, go to my Instagram blog @abby.inprogress because I’m way more active on there!!

Slowly learning to love this little corner. It’s a lot different from my old spot upstairs that had a lot of window lighting, but I think I’m getting used to it
