I reblogged that one "racism and imperialism in Tintin stories" with a little headcanon about how Tintin's stories (as we know them) are often distorted versions of his true adventures, concocted by the publishers to make them more palatable to the Belgian reading public. What do you think of it?

It’s a nice thought. A good headcanon to have if you headcanon the stories being told by the papers in the fictional world of Tintin, rather than the adventure playing out from an invisible onlooker’s POV.which for a fic writer can be good because it gives you justification (beyond the fact that transformative works is something to be encouraged) to make up w/e u want to have happened during these adventures that the readers just didn’t get to see in canon.but as a piece of fiction in the real world in which Tintin does not exist as a real person, it leads into speculations as to how much control Hergé had over his work. which I feel requires alot more research to tackle or even poke at with a 10-foot pole.Given how critical Hergé was of his older comics, such as Tintin in Congo for being very racist, I like to believe that had he still been alive today he would have made similar criticism to all his work and kept improving himself in that aspect in the hypothetical future work he would’ve made.I’m an optimist that way.but in the end, it doesn’t really take anything away from what the books are.while I still struggle with it because of anxiety, I do believe you can enjoy something while still being aware of it’s flaws, wether the flaws be in terms of quality or problematic themes.

The easiest way for me to handle things is to just view it through a historical lenses. He was a man of his times, and while we should def talk about how his portrayal of races and the white savior narrative could have been better-- more so we in the present can try our best to make more appropriate stories-- I think by viewing it with that mindset it allows us to take things with a grain of salt.

People can still be uncomfortable though, I know I sure do when I see some of the caricatures of races, but I also don’t think it makes anybody a bad person if they still find enjoyment from the stories. People are allowed to like things that are flawed.

I drew some haddotin bondage, you’re welcome.

I ended up with two versions and decided to do something weird with it, which ended up being an animation which makes the scene look alot more insidious than it actually is.

then finally I just did some tinkering with the pastel one and ended up with the most humble of the three, which I actually like the most.
