What’s more iconic than Cristina Yang responding to Meredith Grey telling her she was pregnant in season 6 with “Are we happy about this, or are we excerising our legal right to choose?”
Like excitement as the automatic response to news of a pregnancy is a trend that needs to end. Not everyone is excited about a pregnancy, not ever pregnancy is wanted, and sometimes even when they are it’s the wrong time, or there are other things keeping it from being happy news.
On the other hand, Cristina is a character who had, at that point in the series, become pregnant and scheduled an abortion at least once. She is someone who plans to avoid carrying a pregnancy.
But none of that particularly matters, her best friend is pregnant, and she wants to support her, and in order to do that she realizes she needs to know what she’s thinking, so she asks, with zero judgement, is this happy news, do you plan to keep this pregnancy, or do you need to schedule an abortion?
And when Meredith answers, Cristina listens, and supports her and her desision.
(Also, the “You’re my person” thing that became famous from Grey’s Anatomy? It was originally Cristina telling Meredith she wrote her name down as her emergency contact for when she got her abortion.)
