• Luna Lovegood fell in love when she was 7 with the red-headed girl who lived in her village.
• She asked her mum if she would help Luna write her a letter (“Because she should know I love her Mummy, I want to make her happy.”)
• The next time she sees her, she hands her a letter with her carefully printed name and little hearts she placed around the edges. Luna had also insisted that she stick every bit of glitter she could find around their house.
• The red-headed girl smiled broadly at Luna and took her hand; they went to play in the woods by where they lived.
• The girl kissed Luna on the cheek and said she loved her too. (Luna ran home after that and told both her parents that she was going to marry her.)
• When Luna’s mum died, she moved away and didn’t see the red-headed girl again.
• Luna liked Hogwarts, she liked the moving stairs and the banquets. She liked Ravenclaw too. (She liked the boys who laughed at her and called her Loony less)
• She also really liked the pretty girl in Gryffindor; she reminded her of the red-headed girl back home. She was friendly too, but she disappeared a lot, so Luna made friends with Moaning Myrtle.
• When she learned what happened with Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley in the chamber, she hugged Ginny on the last day of term and told her she hoped she felt better.
• (Ginny did feel a little better after that.)
• Luna took divination in her third year, and through that, made friends with Padma Patil.
• Luna and Padma would spend days by the Black Lake, exchanging predictions and talking about magical creatures. Padma told Luna that she was going to the Yule Ball with Ron Weasley and Luna smiled, and wished Padma had a good time.
• (Luna soon learned upon returning after the Christmas Holidays, that Padma did not have a good time with Ron, so she made Padma a necklace and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek.)
• The next year, Luna picked flowers from the Hogwarts grounds and gave them to Cho Chang with an apology.
• Luna let Cho cry, and never called her annoying or weak, and in turn, Cho never called Luna strange.
• Instead, she made Cho flower crowns and they read in silence together. Cho let Luna tell her about Thestrals and the red-headed girl she used to know from her village.
• (Cho didn’t say much in return, but Luna never made her. She was grateful for that.)
• Ginny and Luna grew considerably closer that year, and Luna felt her heart tug every time Ginny smiled at her.
• (Luna painted Ginny a picture as a thank you, when Ginny defended her against the boys who called her Loony. Ginny held her hand for the rest of the day.)
• She listened when Ginny spoke about boys, she hugged her when said boys broke her heart and Luna would stroke her hair and tell her about her latest theory about Nargles. (It never failed to make Ginny smile.)
• When Harry left to hunt Horcruxes, Luna spent all her effort trying to cheer Ginny up. (“You know Ginny, the ones who love us never really leave us.”)
• That was when Ginny kissed Luna.
• And Luna kissed back.
• They spent a lot of that time hiding away from everyone else but themselves.
• Stealing kisses when everything hurt a little more than it should have.
• Ginny reminded Luna of fire and strength. She was impulsive decisions and loud laughter and Luna traced the freckles on Ginny’s arms and together they made their own constellations.
• They held hands when the Carrows sauntered down the corridors, they whispered I love yous under stars, and Luna picked more flowers those months than she ever had before.
• After Luna was taken to Malfoy Manor and then rescued, she sent letters to Ginny as often as she could. She promised she would come back.
• And, as May dawned, she made her way back to Hogwarts, although a less welcoming Hogwarts than it had been when she was 11.
• She greeted Ginny, handing her a pair of radish earrings, before they went to sit in a quiet corner of the room of requirement.
• Luna knew it wouldn’t last. In a few hours, Harry Potter would be storming the halls of Hogwarts and the children she grew up with could be dead.
• She knew that Ginny loved her, she was certain. But she also knew that Ginny loved Harry, and she would not make her choose.
• So Luna chose for her, kissed her softly one last time, and they both went to join the fight.
• A few years later, when winter was upon them, Luna sat in the front row and watched her two friends vow themselves to one another. (She didn’t cry, not until she saw that Ginny was wearing the radish earrings she had given her)
• At the reception, Luna took herself outside, only to meet a tall girl dressed in a suit. The woman introduced herself (“Rolf Scamander, my parents were convinced I was going to be a boy. The name stuck.”)
• Luna giggled, when she noticed the small gathering of mistletoe collecting above their heads. She pointed it out to Rolf, smiling and blushing.
• (“Mistletoe. Do you reckon it’s trying to hint at something?”)
• (“Hmm. It’s probably full of Nargles.”)
• (“What are Nargles?”)
• (“You know what? I have no idea.”)
