If you, a teenaged or adult human, wasn’t embarrassed and could study language full time you would learn way faster than a baby.

In my defense, babies receive more positive reinforcement than I do as well. Babies will say ha ba bah dah ba hah and all the adults around them will be like 🤯 really? Wow 😱 that is so interesting 😁 great job! 🤗 and then what happened? 🤔

How to study grammar in a foreign language

I have studied grammar in French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and Russian, so I’m basing this off of my experiences with that. I’m going to preface this by saying that in order to study grammar fairly quickly and effectively, you’re going to need to put the work in. Yes, you can learn grammar through conversation and making mistakes, but frankly, it will take a lot longer, and will be a lot more confusing. Grammar is hard and often boring, but it’s necessary.

German Podcasts (and a bit of music)

I love listening to German, I’m pretty sure I’ve learned to properly pronounce many German words because I listened to German songs so much. But then I wanted to get more proficient, so I partly moved to podcasts. 

Before I name my favorite German podcasts, I would like to mention a couple of rules I stick to when choosing a new podcast: 

1. The topic has to be interesting to me (aka I would listen to it in my native language/English as well). 

2. I have to like the voice of the podcaster (sorry, but I wouldn’t stick to a voice I don’t like, haha). 

3. It has to be available on Spotify as I listen to music and podcasts exclusively there (and sometimes YouTube).

Sooo, now the podcasts

1. Fest & Flauschig

I’ve been listening to this podcast for forever, it is hosted by satirist Jan Böhmermann and (one of my favorite) musician Ollie Schulz. And they talk a lot about popculture and politics, so you know, everything I love. The podcast is the longest one I listen to - around one hour per episode, they have a new episode twice a week usually. 

2. Buchingers Tagebuch

I’ve already praised the youtuber Michi Buchinger here so many times, the podcast is just pure gold. It’s one of those more lifestyle ones, he talks about his experience in the world with a lot of irony. New episode every week, usually max half an hour long.

3. Was jetzt?

This is ZEIT Online’s journalist podcast about daily events. There’s usually a couple of short episodes everyday, around 10 minutes long, it just keeps me on the wavelenght of what is happening in the world. 

4. Servus. Grüezi. Hallo.

Also ZEIT’s podcast, political one, but led like a debate between the three German speaking countries. Three Zeit’s journalist (one from Berlin, one from Vienna, one from Zürich) discuss weekly the contemporary political issues and how the mentioned countries deal with them. If you want to know everything about German speaking countries, this is a way to go, haha. It’s usually between 40-50 minutes long.

5.Darf sie das?

My newest discovery and I’m IN LOVE. Weekly commentary about current feminist issues with Nicole Schöndorfer, usually around 20 minutes long, everything I need. 

And also if you want to listen to some German music, I have a playlist on Spotify that I update pretty often, here’s a link (it’s called like this, because it was made for a couple of my female friends when they started learning German, haha)

Gelegentlich isn’t really used in spoken german because it’s a long word, but fits well in written texts. Ab und zu is the most common in spoken German - it’s like “once in a while”. All three are acceptable and pretty much interchangeable imo. @lemonadeandlanguages

Hallo German Study Buddies, I recently completed a topic about Gleichberechtigung zwischen Frauen und Männer (Equality between women and men) and I thought I would share some vocabulary.

We need to talk about LingoHut

I’m supposed to be studying some Italian, but instead, I was googling in my computer how to learn a new language (no, googling how to learn will not teach you shit, you have to sit down and learn your target language not how to do it, I know but I’m lazy.) and I came across LingoHut, and I have to share it.

I don’t know if someone ever talked about this page, but if they did is worth mentioning again.

So basically you go to the website and in the Home Page you have to choose what is your first language and what language are you trying to learn.

Once you choose it’ll take you to another page in which you have tons of lessons, for ex. In Italian, there are 109 lessons.

I haven’t checked every lesson yet but for example, the first one is greetings and such. You click that lesson and you have 16 flashcards that will show you the word in your target language and the translation, at the same time that someone pronounces the words.

And basically is a bunch of game, an easy matching words kind of game, some kind of tic tac toe with words, a memory game do you know the one that kids play in which they have to find the matching pictures? Same but with words and lastly a listening and matching game.

Below the bar of the games, we have the vocabulary list of the words we are taught in that lesson, and you can click the word and listen the pronunciation.

In the end, you have a bunch of the next lessons.

The lessons vary from the content it can be greetings, numbers, health stuff, office words, computer terminology, etc.

The website doesn’t have every language in the world, but it has a lot of them. choose your target language, in my case Italian, and enjoy, is fun and simple if you want to practice or do something related to your target language but you don’t have the willingness that day to study something more consistent like structure.

And the best part is that as far as I went looking around in this page it’s fucking free. Sure, you won’t end the one hundred and something lessons speaking like a native from whatever target language you’re learning, but it can be useful to expand your vocabulary.
