DUNE: PART 2 (2024) dir. Denis Villeneuve

obsessed with how paul knows that he can no longer promise to remain with her. he can only promise to love her. he knows he has become the very thing she feared and that he cannot give her what she deserves, what she asked of him- an equal partnership- because he has made himself her oppressor. he cannot in good faith to promise to be by her side, because he has elevated himself above her and has left her behind. and so the only thing he has left to say is that he loves her because it is the only thing that is still true. he knows it is not enough. he says it anyways.

I need everyone to understand about the fremen.

They do not cry. Ever.

To give water to the dead is the most sacred honor that anyone could give but they rarely and never do that because it's ingrained in them to not waste water from birth. A single tear could mean life and death for them. To give water to the living? Unheard of.

Paul crying over killing Jamis in the book was a moment that astonished the fremen around him. Jessica ponders their reactions and knows that this is a holy moment.

Jessica then forcing Chani to cry for Paul(this was not in the book btw but I love it) is the ultimate betrayal of her autonomy. To force her to give what is essentially a piece of her life to him without her consent is sacrilegious and she knows it.

Water of Life indeed.

the scene where jessica uses the voice to force chani to use her tears to resurrect paul is SO fucking crazy to me. true love's kiss only it doesn't save the day, it destroys everything. the fact that she literally has to cry to bring him back, the way his eyes immediately snap open, her horror and devastation when she realizes he came back changed. it's a fairy tale and it's a fucking nightmare.

Something I go absolutely feral over when it comes to paulxchani is how chani is always stroking/playing with paul's hair, I mean I don't blame her look at those luscious curls:

It does something to me though that she does this either to comfort him or when she herself is feeling worried or anxious as a way to calm herself.

But I think we can confirm that chani's love language is running her fingers through paul's hair.

chani saying she hates her name sihaya because it's part of the prophecy... the prophecy being planted/a means to control the fremen but also tragically and horrifically being real because chani's tear did bring paul back. paul saying he prefers chani to sihaya because he loves her for who she is and not anything to do with the prophecy. chani hating her name because it's the part of the prophecy that took away what she had with the real paul, before the water of life

I just had a heartbreaking thought, after paul drinks the wol and he's talking to Jessica, he says that his visions are clear now and that he sees a narrow way through. We don't see what he saw apart from one brief moment where we see Paul's hand driving the crysknife into feyd's chest, winning the duel. I just realised that if paul saw this moment and his visions are clear now, then it's likely that he saw that whole ending scene, that was the narrow way through. Which means he also probably saw the moment chani walked away. So now I am thinking about all those looks paul sent to chani, just before the duel, during the duel and after the duel and maybe it wasn't just because he was trying to draw strength from her and remind himself why he's fighting, but because he knows come the end of this, if he wins, he'll have to watch her walk away and so he's taking every moment he can to memorise her and to drink her in before he's faced with being without her for however long.
