wassup y’all! i was going through some old photos, & my hair has been through a l o t so i thought i’d share my (hair) transition story!

row 1: pre-transition ❌

my hair was r o u g h. it had no volume, no curl, and was just really damaged & dead from the amount of heat and chemicals i put it through on a regular basis.

-10000/10 would not recommend

row 2: starting transition 🏁

eventually i put my foot down & told myself enough was enough. november 2017 i officially stopped putting any sort of heat or chemicals in my hair, and that remained unbroken until i got curious how it would look in november 2019. around this time was when i got into teaching myself about different hair products/methods, protective styling, etc. and began having a new style every week (all while acquiring a l o t of bandanas). i became known in my school by my hair & the full aesthetic i would pair with it each week, and it was qUiTe the wild ride.

my favs at this time were def twist outs, space buns, and my long twists.

6.69/10- lots of fun, but time consuming (& requires you building up muscle for how long you’re doing your hair πŸ’ͺ🏽)

row 3: choppin! βœ‚οΈ

ah the moment i had been waiting for! initially i cut off just the damaged ends & was left with this lil mess of an afro, but i reeeeeaaaalllyyyy wanted a tapered cut. my parents didn’t want to take me to get it, so one day i snapped and did it myself. i kept keeping my hair up like this for a solid 6 months until my mom was finally defeated & took me to get a real haircut.

8/10- fun & freeing experience (even if it didn’t look perfect)! might honestly do again at this rate ;)

row 4: now!! :)) πŸ₯³

i’ve finally gotten into eco styler gel to define my natural curls, & i’m lovin it. shorter hair is s o much fucking easier to take care of, and i’m still so in love with the look. parts a lil damaged bc of straightening this past thanksgiving, but at this rate i could probably cut it off. i dO currently need another haircut though, and with the quarantine & all i may just do it myself again ;)

100000/10- it get s o much easier with time & so much easier to rock new styles

hope u guys enjoyed this & gl to anyone that may be transitioning now!

feel free to send in any of your hair stories :))

Hi! I have been natural for almost 2 years and it’s been going great but, I still don’t know what my hair type is I know it’s not important but I don’t know how to figure it out. When I wash it I feel tight curls almost 4B like and even when it’s dry I can feel the tight curls but, when I put leave in conditioner as opposed to getting defined the curls start to separate and it looks almost 4c like.

hey! hair types can always be a mixture of several types, but from this it sounds like it’s mostly 4b. you’re measuring your natural hair type, and product tends to weigh down hair, thus making it look like another type.Β

hope this helps!

I just recently gave myself a big chop, my hair is super 4c. The front grows quickly, but everywhere else is super slow. I also have some defined curls but it’s only on certain spots. How do I grow my hair to the point where I can put it in protective styling and how do I define my curls and make my hair less tough and rigid?

i recently gave myself a big chop too! i’ve been defining my curls by doing a deep conditioning a lot more often (about every week now), but my hair is naturally super dry & very frizzy, so it doesn’t over moisturize it. other than deep conditioning, if my hair is looking rough in the morning, i spray it with a bit of water & coconut oil and work with it until it’s a little less of a mess lmao. as for growing your hair to the point where you can put it in protective styling, it’s recommended to have about 2 inches (stretched) if you’re getting a style with extensions, and enough hair to grip if you’re getting a style on just natural hair. the only piece of advice for growing hair is to stay diligent, keep your hair healthy, and keep it moisturized. plus, it doesn’t hurt that you visibly see a lot more growth once your hair is already short (it’s really encouraging if you’re trying to grow your hair out :)) !

good luck with your hair!

Yo I adore your blog!!! I'm half black half white myself, 14 and I'm ashamed to say it, but I'm really bad at taking care of my natural care. Having spent the past three years in a perm, it was only a year ago that I decided to go back natural. Now, I'm learning how to properly care for thick, 4C afro hair, and I'm a lot happier than I was a year ago!! So from one mixed girl to another, I love your tips, and your content!! πŸ’“πŸ’“πŸ’“ stay cool!

Heat damage over the years caused my hair to go from 3a to between 2a and 2b. Is there any way I can get my curls back? Wavy hair ain't cutting by for me.

oof i don’t know if you can officially completely reverse the heat damage, but remoisterizing/protein treatments and twisting/finger coiling it a lot could maybe help it look not as different from your natural hair.Β

although i don’t believe it can actually bring back the curl, it should be able to blend it more to your original hair type.Β

if it were me, i would probably be trying to grow back my original natural hair, and just blending the other heat damaged texture.

i’m sorryy this probably isn’t too much help

good luck with your hair tho!
