A Quick RB Update

Hi all, just wanted to drop in and give a brief update on the RB front. Much as I’d love to report that I have a shiny new completed chapter to add to Compos Mentis, I have a few pretty stressful things going on atm that are delaying finishing up the next chapter (moving, car fixes, and changing work teams, no necessarily in that order). It is still coming, but it will likely be another month or two before I have the mental space to sit down and really enjoy finishing it up. Thanks for being so patient!

In other news, in my pre-Bridgerton Season 3 mania I’ve discovered that Colin Bridgerton and Ellie Dace from RB both have the same birthday: March 2nd.

Which also happens to be today! So happy birthday, you pair of fictional romantically-oblivious nerds! 🥳🎉

A non-exhaustive list of songs I desperatly want to see the Vitamin String Quartet cover in Season 3 of Bridgerton:

  • "Yellow" by Coldplay
  • "Stay" by the Kid Laroi & Justin Beiber
  • "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran
  • "Talk" by Hozier
  • "Grave" by Tate McRae (unlikely since it only came out last year)
  • "Enchanted" by Taylor Swift
  • "Shivers" by Ed Sheeran
  • "Lose You To Love Me" by Selena Gomez
  • "Say Something" by A Great Big World
  • "You're Losing Me" by Taylor Swift (literally anyting by Taylor Swift honestly)

Feel free to add to this list!

Colin you really tried to use that new swagger on our girl and failed. Season 3 sneak peak from the event.

Can we just appreciate some of the visual book vs show details here:

  • The last place we know Colin travelled to in S2 was the Greek isles
  • Pen’s name is likely a reference to Penelope the wife of Odysseus who spent years waiting for her husband to return home from running around Greece after the Trojan war
  • In the book, in one of Colins journal entries he talks about visiting and being captivated by the birthplace of Aphrodite
  • Pen’s colouring and new style in the show (red hair worn long, light blue and green gowns) bear a strong resemblance to The Birth of Venus painting by Botticelli, which Colin also references in his journal entry
  • In the book Colin’s internal monologue about Pen midway through reads “she was a siren, a goddess”
  • Those mad-lads in the Bridgerton makeup and costume department made Pen post-glow-up literally look like the depiction of the Greek goddess of love and beauty from a renaissance painting ♥️♥️

I’m howling and gnawing at the bars of my cage! I can’t wait three months for S3 dammit!

Bonus thoughts:

  • In the story of Odysseus and Penelope, she has a bunch of suitors all vying for her hand, so she sets a challenge that she knows only her husband will be capable of completeing
  • If they manage to reference that somehow with Colin vying for her affections and making up for the thoughtless things he said about her I’ll be an extremely happy bean ♥️

On today's episode of LotR AU: Boromir Lives, it's after the battle of Pelennor Fields! There are so many great possibilities to explore when Boromir finally, finally returns to Minas Tirith--- making the agonizing decision to follow Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead instead of going straight to the city with Theoden, fighting like a demon outside the gates, learning about his father's death, and then choosing to leave again to accompany Aragorn to the Black Gate, but right now it's WHUMP TIME.

Obviously, first up is Faramir. If Boromir is with Aragorn, he won't enter the city until after the battle, and so he wouldn't know anything about Faramir's flight from Osgiliath or the pyre in the tombs.

In the few days between the battle and leaving for the Black Gate, I envision Boromir operating on undiluted adrenaline as the wounded and dead are tended. Who needs food? Who needs sleep? Not Boromir. He's returned to his city at its lowest possible moment and he's going to DO EVERYTHING TO FIX EVERYONE ALL AT ONCE.

The scene where Pippin finds Merry wounded and dazed and wandering the streets, has always been a favorite of mine and was one of the first LotR illustrations I ever did ~20 years ago. In the book, Gandalf is the one who comes to carry Merry up to the Houses of Healing. In this AU, you know it's Boromir.

Anyway, eventually Legolas and Gimli probably have to force some rudimentary self-care.

Just so I can manage my (ridiculous) expectations and stop checking ao3 every day… do you think we’ll get an RB update sooner rather than later? All asked in the knowledge that life is life and things change!

My inbox is a bit flooded after the last update and I am a wee bit overwhelmed (mostly by the love and support <3) but since this question got asked the most:

Not sure honestly! I have about 1/3 of the next chapter ("The White Wizard's Final Foretelling") drafted. But this is the time of year when my work planning for the first two quarters really kicks off, so I may not be able to work on it for a few weeks. That said, I reeeeaaally want to get CM done this year, so I'm going to try (heavy emphasis on try) and get the next chapter out by the end of Feb if I can.

I will post a snippet of the chapter here before the chapter goes out though! Please don't lose sleep checking AO3!

The Women of Rávamë's Bane

Someone mentioned to me recently how they loved that RB passes the Bechdel test several times over, and it made me realise just how much I genuinely love all the diffrent, comlicated women I've ended up writing for this story.

Some of them aren't mine (it's a fanfic after all) but they all have aspects to them that I truely admire, find inspiring, and I've grown very fond of exploring their personalities over the past few years.

lotr + heroes of the fourth age

The servants of Sauron were routed and dispersed, yet they were not wholly destroyed; and though many Men turned now from evil and became subject to the heirs of Elendil, yet many more remembered Sauron in their hearts and hated the kingdoms of the West. The Dark Tower was levelled to the ground, yet its foundations remained, and it was not forgotten.

One of ny friends has never watched the lotr movies all the way through, nor read the books in years. She knows nothing.

I jokingly sent her my absolute favorite LOTR fanfic to her to read around 11pmish one night. She said she'd read a chapter or two before bed...

the next day i ask her how it was and shs gets mad at me like "HOW DARE YOU SEND ME SUCH A GOOS BOOK" "I WAS UP UNTIL 5AM READING"

Anyways. She cant stop reading it and absolutely loves it

one thing I really appreciate about Eleanor is that even though she's an elf (kind of..) her physical description is so human (as in not drop dead gorgeous but pretty in a flawed/lovable way) which always makes me think of old hollywood actresses (who are obviously extremely beautiful women styled to the max but they're not current influencer beauty standard beautiful - they all have "normal" features and dont look like someone facetuned all their flaws away). Like Diana Rigg, Gene Tierney or even Romy Schneider all have very Eleanor vibes to me. And that so fits her personality!

I take this as a ludicrously big complement for two reasons:

  1. I love that I've managed to write Eleanor in such a way that her appearace feels both human (kinda) and realistic to whoever is reading. I always intended for her apperance to be the least interesting thing about her, and it's really gratifying to know she comes across that way (especially after almost 2 books).
  2. Diana Rigg, Gene Tierney and Romy Schneider! I will take that old Hollywood complement gladly, because just look at these women:

Of all of them I think Diana Rigg is the closest looking to Eleanor (it's the grin I think... and the fact that she played The Queen of Thorns in GoT)

Love this,

“I wonder,” he said conversationally, “would you be so brazen if I shouted for assistance in detaining a dangerous fugitive, and every guard and good citizen within a half-mile all dogpiled on you?” Tink gave him a smile that would have looked at home on a shark. “And I wonder, would you be so condescending if your brother and father found out it was your blood they found inside my cell that spooked the guards, and got them to so kindly open the door for me?” Loki felt his face twitch into an annoyed sneer at the reminder of that little mistake that had snowballed into such a blunder. “You do realise you’re picking a fight with a Prince and a God of this realm right now, yes?” “Lowercase ‘g’ god,” she shot back, through another mouthful of food. She pointedly ran her eyes over him with unmasked disdain. “At best.”

Someone asked me a few weeks ago what would happen if Tink from Ravame's Bane and Loki (MCU) ever met – since they’re both tricksy, semi-divine drama queens with extremely grey morals, and arguably more power than they should have. This started as a super short drabble I jotted down on my phone that quickly snowballed into... well, this.

It might not be a RB Chapter update sadly (yet, but it's coming along), but it did; A) help me finally get past my writers block, and B) gave me some comfort as seasonal depression decided to start on me really early this year.

It also has Tink making an absolute menace of herself around Asgard after getting some of her maia powers back, which was a lot of fun to write.
