Best advice I’ve received so far

  • the time you take being jealous of other people’s success is the time you could be using to build your own
  • you’re never going to “feel like it”
  • doing and practicing now is better than waiting for the perfect moment
  • eliminate people with toxic habits from your life
  • you are in control. Everything you’ve done up to this moment led you here. Therefore, your future is determined by what you do now.
  • everything is as it should be and only later in life you can connect the dots.
  • self discipline will give you freedom. consistency will give you results
  • everything is temporary. You should find freedom in this concept
  • the rich stay rich acting poor and the poor stay poor acting rich
  • being healthy means finding a balance between the good and the bad
  • the people that outranked you have outworked you.
  • you can’t be grateful and negative at the same time.

Meditate on these statements. They are so very powerful! Xxx

001; in lecture write down any key terms, facts, and formulas.

if you can write while listening, copy down one or two examples if your teacher does any. if you can’t do those at once, watch the steps instead of writing it down. it’ll help you more to understand how the problem is done than it will to see the solution in your notes.

002; after class if your teacher assigns homework problems, do them the day you learn the material. it’ll help reinforce your memory and the content will be fresher in your mind.

if you aren’t assigned problems, do some anyway. you can find some online easily - just Google “<insert your topic here> practice problems”

start memorizing those key terms and formulas. you often memorize formulas through repeated use, so keep practicing!

003; troubleshooting need help? ask your teacher if you can.

you can go on Khan Academy or some other online resource (I have a resource master post here

you can also ask friends or parents, if you can be sure they’re knowledgeable enough with the subject matter to help you.

004; before exams start reviewing weeks in advance! during the semester you should make a master list of the topics that have been covered.

your textbook most likely has practice questions for the end of a section, or you can find those questions for your topic online. pick a couple of random ones from each topic and print them out as a practice test. set up everything in test condition - nothing on your desk but a pencil and eraser, a silent room, and a timer set for however long your exam period is.

then grade it with a red pen if you have an answer key. for anything you got wrong - check your work. did you make a silly mistake? promise to be more careful. if you’re rusty or forgot something, refer to the previous homework, notes, and examples you have organized somewhere. (you do right?) if you just don’t understand, refer to troubleshooting.

if you don’t have an answer key, just note which concepts you’re rusty with or don’t understand.

005; during exam i have an exam advice post here

if it’s multiple choice use that to your advantage. there are many many ways, for example you can guess and check eliminate implausible solutions until you have just 1 left, etc. just use the multiple choice format well.

check your answers! check check check check check

check everything, even every little bit of arithmetic because small errors are usually what throw you off. you can also check by doing the problem in reverse, for example substitute your solution back in after solving an equation.

As promised, the tutorial on how I make my flashcards!

The flashcards I use are from HEMA. They are 10.5 x 7.5 cm, ruled and made from very sturdy paper. I recommend getting pre-cut flashcards because cutting them yourself 1) will cost you a lot of time and 2) you probably won’t have thick enough paper available

  • I like to use flashcards for information that is easily summarized into a handful of bulletpoints and doodles!

ways to study for exams that are actually productive

  • use actual note cards for vocab. yes, apps like quizlet are dandy when you’re on the go, but actually physically writing out each note card helps put the information into memory faster than typing them.
  • visual learner? make charts and diagrams. they don’t have to be pretty. the lines don’t have to be perfectly straight. it doesn’t have to be photogenic. but if it helps you learn, do it.
  • after you take notes (in class or at home/from your text book), write down possible quiz questions about the material on the next page while it’s still fresh in your mind. later on when you’re studying for the test, use these questions to gauge what specifics out of that chapter you need to work on the most.
  • start sooner rather than later. i know, you’ve heard this a million times from every teacher ever. but it’s legit. especially as you get into harder level classes and college courses because there is literally so much material that the tests cover that you simply can not accurately learn all of it over night. instead, start about 10 days in advance (but of coarse, the sooner the better).
  • studying doesn’t have to be a big giant study session that takes hours. if you start far enough in advance, study sessions can be around an hour, hell even 45 minutes is a good. if you go too long in one study session your brain will be fried and studying will be pointless because your brain won’t be processing any of it. that’s why it’s important to take breaks and not just cram for 5 hours the night before an exam.
  • actually study. hold yourself accountable and make your education a priority. if you have homework and studying to do, make it a priority over going partying or watching tv. there will be another party. you can dvr your show. you can’t take your test on a later day because you don’t feel ready. so be ready.
  • be careful with study groups. if you have a study group with all of your best friends, lets face it, you’re going to end up spending more time talking about harry styles and supernatural than actually studying. it’s better to have a study group with people who are your friends, but not best friends. and it’s better to keep it between 5-7 people so that everyone can be involved.
  • if the material is just super confusing and you can’t seem to understand it no matter how hard you study, it’s not you. it’s the way you were taught it. each teacher teaches a bit differently, and maybe their style of teaching just isn’t for you. if this happens, find a way that explains it the best for you. for example, if chemistry is just super confusing for you, try watching the Crash Course chemistry videos on youtube or have a friend explain it to you. this will give you a completely different perspective on the material and will help you understand it better.
  • at the end of the day, remember that everything will be okay. studying can be stressful, especially if it’s in a class that you struggle in. but i promise you that you are not the only one who struggles sometimes in school, it’s a part of being human. as long as you actually put in an effort and try your best, be proud of yourself. take a deep breath. and remember: you got this.

23.09.17 // I’m getting nervous because the midterms are coming and I feel like I’m a bit lost. I understand most of the concepts lately but practical exercises are hard and I feel insecure about them, so I’m gonna practice structures more this week!
