listening to records with asahi.

You’d ask him to bring some of his own, since he mentioned having some at his house. You see he’s brought albums of artists you had never heard of, except for a single Benny Goodman album that was honestly probably his parent’s but you live for jazz so you love that he brought it. He’s never listened to any of them; he doesnt own a record player and his parents threw their extra old one out years ago. He’s really embarrassed because he likes to buy records all the time, promising to himself that he’s gonna buy an actual turntable next week, then the next week, then the next...He hasn’t listened to any of his records. Because of this, he’s so shy to show you the ones he brought, but you assure him that this is the whole point of today: to listen to new music together.

You pull out your turntable from the corner, putting it in the middle of your room. You switch the speakers on and from your pile of records, you pull out a favorite of yours for him to listen to. It’s a Ben Folds album. He watches in quiet fascination as you put the needle on a specific area of the disc; there’s a specific song you want to show him before the rest of the album. As it plays through the chorus after the second verse, you tell him,“This song honestly got me through losing my grandmother. It sounds cheesy as hell, but she was a huge part of my life. She lived with us for over ten years before she got really sick. She was in the hospital for a while. We knew it wasn’t going to end well, but it was still painful as hell to see her go like that. This song kept me sane when we traveled to bury her. In a weird way.” You then profusely apologize for the word vomit, you overshared when he didn’t really ask for it. You had only been friends a few months, but it felt like you could trust him with anything. You could only hope he felt the same; he just was so shy at times, you couldn’t help but worry that he was keeping himself away from you.

“No no, it’s okay. I love hearing your connections with songs, they’re all...really rich with life.” He facepalms because he feels like a dork for saying something that sounds so cliche, but you tell him you really appreciate it.

The night continues, you point out the different instrumentalists on his Benny Goodman album and tell him of their significance. You try not to talk over every song. You’re both laying on the floor, heads next to each other and bodies facing the opposite way.

“I love the crackle with old albums like these,” you sigh during a ballad, and he immediately goes in a panic and turns his head to look at you.

“Is it that noticeable?! Oh god, I knew this album was old, but not so-“

“Asahi. Crackling with old music like this makes it even more divine to listen to. It especially makes it more divine. It means the album has been loved repeatedly for a very long time. You’re lucky to have this with you and it sounds freaking delicious, I promise.”

His smile was a sheepish, with a slight mix of confused, before turning his head back to look at the ceiling.

You close your eyes and breathe in deeply, loving the way the chords of the piece mesh together. After a couple of minutes you hear something soft fall next to you, and when you open your eyes and turn your head you see Asahi taking his hair tie out and letting his hair loose. It makes you squirm, but only because you’ve never seen him without a headband and his hair in a bun. You let him know he looks like a mermaid and he says,”Uhm, thanks....?”

During Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, you make him (lovingly) shut up, because it was a masterpiece that he had never listened to before. He had never even heard of the name Gershwin. You gawked at those very words and insisted that it was the next record to listen to. You shush him when he tries to talk.

“This is pretty ni-“

“Shh!!”

“But I-“

“SHUSH! Let him speak.” You gestured at the record spinning.

He huffs, but there’s a smile on his face. He loves that you’re so appreciative of orchestral music. It makes him want to find a love and appreciation as strong as yours for something in his own life.
