sometimes you do just have to lie to children.

If, when my toddler is, you know, toddling around saying “mama? Big ball?”

If I were lean down and say “unfortunately the big beach ball for some reason fills you with such an unadulterated rage that is beyond human comprehension that you scream until you pass out, so mama had to remove the beach ball from the premises until you can better regulate your emotions” she would simply stare at me like I had 3 heads full of equal betrayal.

So, for now, instead “big ball went night night!”

Please understand when I say “removed the ball from the premises” I mean I popped it in a fit of exhausted confusion. I murdered the beach ball.

See I’ve lied to you all too and it was better this way.

I am reasonably fun to hang out with and my company is enjoyed by well over 10 people worldwide

in recent events of that zoo losing the clouded leopard, it reminded me of the time i went to a large petting zoo and there was a free roaming little black sheep. cutest little guy i ever saw, soi went to the zookeeper nearby and said ‘i think its really cute how you have a sheep thats allowed to just walk around. ‘ then the zookeepers eyes widened and he grabbed his walky talky and ran 

Jeremy Jackson was only 30 years-old when he was found brutally murdered on June 10th, 2017. The young man lived in Jackson, Mississippi - as did many of his family members. On the day Jeremy was found, his older brother received a text message containing a picture of a severed head placed upon front porch steps of a local home. It was immediately clear that the severed head belonged to Jeremy.

A few hours later, the rest of Jeremy’s body was found less than a mile away. His body had experienced trauma, including severe burns and a gunshot wound to the leg. However, an autopsy later confirmed that Jeremy died by decapitation - meaning he was still alive up until the moment his head was decapitated. His head was then placed on porch steps where it could be seen by passersby.

Jeremy’s family members are baffled by his murder. He was raising three children and working towards his master’s degree at the time of his death. His older brother Corey reported that he last saw Jeremy alive a day earlier, and nothing seemed unusual. He had driven him to a job interview that day, and he was offered the position. Corey explained that Jeremy “didn’t seem worried or scared like something was going to happen to him or someone was looking for him.”

By all accounts, it appeared that Jeremy was doing well before his death. So, what led to him being murdered in such a brutal way? Unfortunately, Jeremy’s murder remains unsolved - but there are a few theories about the killer(s).

Counsel/Council - counsel is advice, the advice giver, or the verb form of giving said advice. Council is the group of people who come together to discuss and/or make decisions.

Desert/Desert/Dessert - desert is a barren landscape where little precipitation occurs. desert - abandon (a person, cause, or organization) in a way considered disloyal or treacherous. dessert - a usually sweet course or dish (as of pastry or ice cream) usually served at the end of a meal.

Taunt/Taut - Taunt is a jeer or provocation, taut means to be pulled tight, or not slack

Weary/Wary - weary means tired and wary means cautious

Rogue/Rouge - rogue is a person who has unaffiliated themselves from what they were before (is the general understanding); a person or thing that behaves in an aberrant, faulty, or unpredictable way - rouge is red

Wonton/Wanton - a wonton is a dumpling, wanton is (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked and/or sexually unrestrained

Haphazard/Halfhazard - haphazard means to  have a lack of plan, order, or direction - the other isn’t a word

Corporal/Corporeal - corporal is a lack of plan, order, or direction and corporeal is to have a physical existence: to be tangible: of a person’s body

Peck/Pec - the first is a kiss (peck) and the second is the shortened version of pectoral (pec)

Virile/Viral - to be virile is to have strength, energy, and a strong sex drive (typically said about men) and then this last year (2020) has personally taught us, is how viral a plague can really be, so of the nature of, caused by, or relating to a virus or viruses

Vulnerable/Venerable - vulnerable means being susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm, and if a person is venerable they’re accorded a great deal of respect, especially because of age, wisdom, or character (or if you’re religious, holy)

Dyed is something that is colored, and died is deceased

Chalk (it up to something) ; chock (-full of something); choked (to cutoff air).

to affect is the action, the effect is the end result

If something doesn’t bother you then you weren’t fazed by it. If you are between two states of being that is a phase.

Canon is the established facts or practices of a literary or religious thing; a cannon can sink your ship, too, but only in the most literal of ways.

gentile is a noun meaning a person who is not jewish. genteel is an adjective meaning that whatever’s being described has an upper-class air or mannerisms.

loose is an adjective for something not firmly attached; lose is a verb for misplacing something. “If you leave that thing so loose, you’re going to lose it.”

breath is a noun; breathe is a verb. Like, “she held her breath until it was safe to breathe again.”

anyway: the actual word. anyways: casual slang that makes your character sound like an American teenager, whether or not they are.

And while we’re at it: when it comes to setting your story (or sections of a story, by design) in past or present tense, please stay aware of which one you’re going with and why, and ONLY USE ONE AT A TIME.

Fascism sells a synthetic nostalgia.

As good a time as any to remind folks of the 14 properties of "ur-fascism" (described by Umberto Eco, who grew up in Italy under Mussolini, in his 1995 essay Ur-Fascism). Not all need be present for single regime to be fascist, but a Venn diagram of all fascist regimes will cover them all.

I never know how to say this without sounding condescending but when it comes to social media you can simply choose not to be around people who make you unhappy.

I made a baby blanket for a pregnant woman at work and I went back and forth about it like “is this weird? To like hand make something for someone when we’re like friendly acquaintances not like bffs. God why are you so fucking awkward.” Anyway I gave it to her and she said she loved it and in the back of my head I’m like yea she’s nice and probably just humoring the weirdo. Well she texted me a picture this weekend of a scrunchy faced newborn at the hospital wrapped in the blanket I made her. And I’m like. Wow. She loved it so much she took it with her! To the hospital! To give birth! She wrapped her newborn it! I am just so filled with love and joy right now.

People will love the things you make them. Because you thought of them and you cared.
