Fanfiction Prompts

@fanficy-prompts / fanficy-prompts.tumblr.com

All prompts are ALWAYS free to use. You do not need to ask permission or give credit if you use any of the prompts posted here to inspire your writing. That's what this blog is here for!
With regard to submissions: no longer accepting fandom specific prompts and won't post them if I do receive them. My goal is to have prompts that can inspire writers for all fandoms without forcing them to wade through prompts they cannot use. Sorry!

  10. When you touch me, my mind is gone.  The only words I know are lost inside your body. (right in there.)

  12. It’s a full moon.  I bought some rope and handcuffs to bring to bed tonight. (beware the moon.)
  13. You aren’t really a good person, but god damn, you make bad look awesome. (no one could steer me right, but mama tried.)

  25. This town isn’t big enough for the both of us.  Let’s run away together! (Let’s join a street gang!  Is NASA recruiting?)
  26. I love you the way a knife loves a heart the way a bomb loves a crowd the way your mother warned you about, essentially. (the way a human loves another human)

  38. You are the love of my life so far. (Tomorrow’s just a day away.)
  39. There should be a word for a threat that is also a promise.  Because that is what I want you to hold me down and do. (I love you)

  43. Fun things to yell during sex: Anything. (he is risen.)
  44. I am writing a book of love poetry for you.  For example: “The only reason you could possibly need your music that loud is if you were planning to listen from my apartment.  You downstairs motherfuckers.” (Every day I hope to see a moving truck pull in.  Or an ambulance.)
  45. when I picture you with your new lover I get angry, and then sad, then kinda horny. (I miss you)
  46. We are terrible for each other, and, yes, we are a disaster.  But tell me your heart doesn’t race for a hurricane or a burning building.  I’d rather die terrified than live forever. (mistakes aren’t always regrets)
  47. If they invented a way to actually have sex over the internet you and I could use that glorious technology for internet hugs. (You know, when I wasn’t using it for sex.)
  48. Life would be way easier if I were easier. (Fact.)
  49. I want to rob lumber mills and hospitals with you and just bewilder the hell out of people the way love should. (We will make everything wrong in the right way.)
  50. I will always love you, or anyway I will always have loved you now. (And you will always be someone who was beautiful, once.)

General Prompt: Put Your Villain on Trial

From 27 Fiction Writing Blunders - And How Not To Make Them! by James Scott Bell:

“One of the techniques I teach in my workshops is borrowed from my courtroom days. I ask people to imagine their villain has been put on trial and is representing himself. Now comes the time for the closing argument. He has one opportunity to make his case for the jury. He has to justify his whole life. He has to appeal to the jurors’ hearts and minds or he’s doomed.

“Write that speech. Do it as a free-form document, in your villain’s voice, with all the emotion you can muster. Emphasize what’s called “exculpatory evidence.” That is evidence that, if believed, would tend to exonerate a defendant. As the saying goes, give the devil his due.

“Note: This does not mean you are giving approval to what the villain has done. No way. What you are getting at is their motivation. This is how you know what’s going on inside your villain’s head throughout the entire novel.”

“What exactly was going on in those unspoken exchanges about previous identities, no-one with ordinary perception could possibly tell, especially the average Westerner, to whom reincarnation remains an enigma. To the Tibetans, however, rebirth was a certainty. We are all born over and over again, they said, in many different forms and situations and to families with whom we have strong karmic connections. In the eyes of the Buddhist, therefore, your mother and father may well have been your parents in a previous life, or maybe even your son, daughter, uncle, cousin, close friend or enemy. The bond had been laid down some time back in ‘beginningless time’ and had been cemented in place through countless subsequent relationships. And so it went on, round and round on the wheel of life and death, the mind or consciousness being irrevocably drawn to its next existence by the propensities it had developed within itself."

Christmas / Yule / Winter Prompts

There’s so many brilliant winter / holiday themed prompts already out there (I’ll reblog some) so for the sake of avoiding redundancy, I’ll do something a little different here. Here’s the titles of some things I’ve personally written over the years. Most of them are just puns or song lyrics, because I’m pretty terrible at coming up with titles for things that AREN’T puns or song lyrics. Feel free to use or take inspiration from them as you see fit! :) Happy writing!

  • The Fight Before Christmas
  • Merry & Bright
  • Spirit of the Season
  • "Io, Saturnalia!" & Other Bad Ideas for Office Parties
  • The UnYulesual Suspects
  • Wolfsbane & Mistletoe
  • The Christmas Presence*
  • You're a Mean One, Mr. [insert character name here]
  • if only in my dreams
  • Blame It On the Mistletoe
  • Ghosts of Christmas Past
  • Yule Shoot Your Eye Out!
  • Candy Canes and Crop Circles
  • Every Time a Bell Rings
  • It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Vetrnætr
  • Santa Traps

(*It was a Ghost Adventures fic, I went through a ~phase~)

Hi folks!

Just a small reminder that I don’t post / share actual fanfic here, only fandom non-specific prompts. I keep getting messages and submissions asking me to, and I don’t want you guys to feel like my lack of response is personal or because I hate you or your fic. It’s just not really what this blog is for. I also can’t send personal messages from this blog (tumblr side blog rules, le sigh) so I can’t really message some of your folks directly. Just wanted to float this out there. Thanks for understanding :)

Writing Resources #1

(Note: I’m only including free resources here, mostly because I’m broke and haven’t had a chance to try out any paid apps / programs. These are the resources I use and recommend, and is by no means a comprehensive list of all the writing tools out there. You might find something else that works better for you and isn’t listed here, and I’d love to see some reblogs from people sharing any other resources!)

For when you just need to get words on the page:

  • Write or Die is easily the most versatile tool for when you need serious motivation to just write. It’s a bit tricky to figure out at a glance, but you can play around with it and find out what works for you. Because of the ability to set time limits and consequences for yourself, Write or Die can help you stay focused and (if you’re like me) stop second guessing every word you write. You can always edit later.
  • Written? Kitten! is an alternative to Write or Die with only rewards (new picture of an adorable animal of your choice every time you hit a word count) and no consequences. It also has a very minimalist layout without a lot of distractions or customization options, which is helpful if, like me, you’re easily distracted.

For visualizing your word count & progress:

  • Pacemaker has a free mode and a subscription mode, but the free mode is pretty much everything you need. This is helpful if you’d like a visual representation of your word count. It can make it easier to see your progress on a project.

For editing:

  • ProWritingAid is... everything. You do need to make an account to use this site, but oh boy oh boy is it ever worth it. (Just make sure to sign up for the free option; it has everything you need.) I use this tool in tandem with my own editing process, and it has an amazing algorithm for catching things that weaken your writing - adverbs, overused words, passive verbs, etc. You don’t need to take all of its advice, but it can help draw your attention to things about your writing that you may have missed. I would recommend this to anyone who is considering trying out a paid program like Grammarly. It’s by far the most useful editing tool I’ve ever come across.
  • Hemmingway App isn’t for everyone. I feel called out by it, but that’s the point - sometimes we need to hear that our writing is getting a bit verbose and ostentatious, and to consider if toning it down a bit might help our story and meaning shine. Again, you can decide not to take any or all of its advice, but it’s a useful tool. (For example: I put this post into the app and it yelled at me for the word “ostentatious” and suggested I replace it with “showy.” That’s not exactly what I meant, so I kept “ostentatious”, but it was a nice suggestion. Does that count as irony?)

As always, happy writing!

General / Angst Prompt

Somehow, a character or characters glimpse what their life may have been like if one pivotal event had not happened, or had happened differently. (Examples: Harry Potter’s parents didn’t die, Bilbo Baggins never found the Ring, Anakin Skywalker never met Padme Amidala, etc.)

Your choice if:

- Your character could be able to see this alternate universe, but not interact with it

- Your character could be able to “live” in this alternate universe for a while

- Changing this event either improves the current situation or makes it worse
