When someone concern trolled the mods, this was their response.

As I have said elsewhere, “I prefer Coke to Pepsi” is an opinion and there can be a discussion about it. “Jews should all be murdered” is not merely an opinion, and it should be treated with the seriousness and severity that it deserves.

Keep punching Nazis.

I don’t understand why the Light Side is considered as a Good Side

They kidnapped kids, I know some of those kids parents thought it was a honor BUT most of them were abducted. S2 of Clone Wars ep Children Of The Force, it’s canon by the way don’t fight me on this, shows mother saying that Jedi told her that one day when her kid gonna be old enough they will come. And they did. The was a whole planet that banish Jedi because of that. Jedi put kids in the camps and brainwashed then - they kidnapped children at 6 months, not only because of attachments but mostly because it was easier to control, brainwash them. So why they are a good guys in this story?

The thing about Light Side/Dark Side duality in Star Wars is that it is highly misunderstood, even in-universe.

Pablo Hidalgo tweeted out some time ago that the Light is the sublimation of the self, while the Dark is the amplification of the self. Taken to each most extreme application, these ideologies are highly toxic.

One of the greatest failings of the Jedi of the Old Republic was the choice to, rather than engage with and develop methods for addressing the problem of personal attachment, to forbid it altogether. That’s the foundation for all of the truly bad things that make up what the Jedi became, and the source of many, many tales of succumbing to the Dark Side.

After all, if you’ve been told your whole life that this thing you want more than anything you’ve ever encountered is morally wrong and bad for you, and something the Force does not want, you’ll probably be more receptive to someone saying, “Hey, you can have all that and more. Accept this path, and you can have everything.”

The absence of a viable middle way essentially created the Sith. By identifying passion as a path to anger as a path to hate as a path to suffering, the Jedi rejected the concept of using passion or anger in the service of a selfless cause. So, too, did the Jedi ignore the possibility that pacifism and serenity at the expense of others’ suffering was an extremely selfish ideological bent. For example:

  • Passion, when it serves the self, is possessive, and can become destructive;
  • Anger, when applied in service of selfish ends, is overtly destructive;
  • Hate is always selfish, and once that is added to the mix, it rots everything else.

The Jedi’s uncompromising approach to this was like the medieval Catholic clergy. Anything that could lead to amplification of the self was to be expressly forbidden. Anything that was innately sublimating of the Self was accepted as doctrine. Palpatine was correct when he referred to the Jedi’s position as “the narrow, dogmatic views of the Jedi,” all while he offered a similarly narrow and dogmatic approach, but from the opposite ideological pole.

Why is the Light seen as the good guys? Because life is only sustainable in the Light. Everything must be balanced, but must be balanced on the Light side of the fulcrum. Why? Because the Dark, while necessary, and even desirable in some measure, is inherently destructive. Amplifying the self will always lead to the tendency to dominate, to impose one’s will over others. Sublimating the self will only sometimes lead to ill ends, and even then, because of passivity, not active application of selfish designs.

In short: the Light is the good side because it is the only place where life can flourish. The Jedi and the Light are not synonymous. Remember what Luke said:

To think that if the Jedi die, the Light dies, is vanity.

There’s more to be said, obviously. But I’m standing here typing this instead of brewing my coffee. :)

All of this is why the original Jeda’ii are so important to this story. The Jedi and Sith are both groups that have lost their way. They have become extremists. Whereas the Jeda’ii understood true balance and trained very hard to follow the will of the Force, using both the light and the dark as needed. They understood what their purpose was as Force users. They weren’t determined to follow their own will. They let the Force guide them.

Men like Qui-Gon Jinn realized the Jedi Council was flawed, because they didn’t always follow the Force’s will. This is probably why they were losing their power. They were disrupting the balance, and the Force can’t flow through you if you refuse to follow it’s influence.

I find it interesting that Luke Skywalker claims there was balance after the war ended. I think he was mistaking peace as a product of balance, but I’m almost certain that there never really was balance after the Empire fell. Only when the darkness and light are equalized can there be balance. It’s obvious these Force users still aren’t paying attention to what the Force’s will really is. This is including Rey and Kylo who keep resisting each other or attempting to tip the balance to their side.

Good points, @daxwashere. Mentioning Qui-Gon is very important, I think. His admonition to Obi-Wan, “Be mindful of the Living Force,” highlights a crucial distinction in the way the Force I perceived. Qui-Gon was saying that it was important to live in the here and now, to try to perceive what the Force was directing you toward, rather than trying to prophesy what was to come or affect destiny in an intrusive way.

I think this is very much part of what Yoda means when he talks about failure. It’s easy to interpret his words to Bail Organa, “Go into exile, I must. Failed, I have,” as meaning his failure to kill Palpatine. I think it’s a deeper understanding of the depth and breadth of his failure concerning Anakin and the fall of the Jedi. Yoda spends so much of the PT trying to see into the future that he loses focus on what is happening in the present. And the result is total catastrophe. That’s why he’s so concerned with Luke’s tendency to look to the future, rather than to concentrate his efforts on perceiving what the Force is telling him now.

After graduation everyone throws their caps in the air, when they soar back down everyone is holding a different cap that resembles an occupation. Some people hold army hats, others baseball caps, some fast food ones, even a helmet for a space suit. Yours however, doesn’t come back down.

“Well,” you say, looking up at the empty sky above you, “that doesn’t fare well.” Your best friend looks at you with sympathy. She already has put the cap of a popular delivery corporation on her head. “It’s just your first job ever.” She says reassuringly. “Maybe you don’t need one in your business. Many people probably don’t.”

You sigh and look around. Literally every single person you can see has a hat, a cap or a helmet. It’s not reassuring.

You try to apply for jobs, but it doesn’t work out. The main reason why everything keeps crashing and burning is that you don’t know where to apply. You have never worried about your first job, knowing it would be given to you anyway. One after the other, you write CVs and applications and collect rejections. On one evening, you can’t think of another way to describe how flexible in a workplace you are and instead open a new document and start to rant. You write your feelings about graduation on a page, then another and another. You fall quickly into writing an essay about how unfair this predetermination is, how stupid to expect literal children to listen to an age old ceremony that could determine your entire life. Your best friend was smart. She was beautiful. She was inventive. Why should she slave away four years at a delivery company, risk bodily harm and physical strain and possible car accidents when she was going to be so much more one day? You have known her many years and you know she won’t be happy at this job. It will just be something to get by.

You don’t know what to do with the essay so you put it on your blog. Unexpectedly, it gains a lot of attention. People come forth expressing how much their first job has stumped them in carreers, some people to this day are still stuck in the job they had been determined back then and they are miserable. You keep in contact and slowly but surely other people come forth. People like you, who have been stuck at graduation without a returning hat. Who have been dropped into the world without care because they aren’t fit for anything. And when you talk you slowly see similarities.

They spend their life writing. Painting. With photography. Or dancing. Singing. Songwriting. There are people who collect everything to create collages and those who make videos. Some animate, some voice act, some sew or spin or knit or crochet. Many play instruments. Many are poets.

Together you realize how those without hats had time to evaluate themselves, to open their minds to creativity and creation. You call your best friend and talk about what you saw. She bursts into tears because her job has ruined her back and she is afraid she won’t be able to keep doing gymnastics which has brought her so much joy.

A year after, an updated version of your rant is printed in a magazine for youth educaiton. It gains traction. Kids appear to graduation ceremonies without their caps, refusing to let the world determine who they are. You get quite a bit of backlash, mostly from parents who just can’t understand why their kids do not want determined lifes. You know better.

You’ve seen creativity die at the drop of a hat.

“We must never forget that the court that keeps delivering these 5-to-4 decisions in favor of Republican efforts to rig the electoral system was itself rigged in favor of Republicans. When Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — with the support of every single Republican in the Senate — simply declared that he would not permit President Barack Obama’s appointed replacement to even get a hearing, let alone a vote, for no real reason other than that Obama was a Democrat. It was unprecedented and indefensible, and it’s the reason the court is now divided 5 to 4 in favor of conservatives instead of 5 to 4 in favor of liberals.”

every time i fuck up plugging in the USB to charge my iphone and scratch it against the underside of the phone i think about that scene at the start of sherlock where sherlock assumes that john watson’s sister is an alcoholic because of the scratches around the charging port of the iphone she gave to him as a gift and i think to myself “man sherlock is a fucking idiot”

Actually the thing about scratches around charger port=alcoholic was a reference to the original stories, where the phone was obviously instead a pocket watch, and the charger port was the spring wind, which was harder to fuck up than plugging in a phone. The whole sherlock scan thing worked well in the victorian era, because social roles were just that rigid - the slightest deviation from the norm said everything.

That obviously doesn’t fucking work now, and the only reason that was a thing in Sherlock is because Moffat is a pretentious asshole who thinks that a show being well written, sensible, and having a coherent plot structure is all for lesser writers, and the only thing he needs is to seem as clever as possible. Which admittedly, does work out for him for a few years, until the plot holes build up too much, and fans start to get pissed off about nothing ever being resolved but instead being thrown away for the new bigger mystery it led to, which then gets thrown away for the new bigger mystery that led to. Remember Doctor Who, how at the start of Moffat’s time as showrunner, he opened series 5 with ‘what caused the crack in Amy’s wall’? He never fucking answered that. He got distracted and wandered off into different plot threads that also never got resolved. He’s a very good writer when given a single episode to work with! His first episode on Doctor Who, he was just a guest writer, and he did the first Weeping Angels episode, and it was really good, because he only had that hour to tell the story. There was no follow up episode, no next season, just this amount of time, start a story, wrap it up satisfyingly, the end. He should NEVER have been put in charge of a show, because he’s the sort of writer that really needs something to reign him in and keep him on track, to remind him ‘hey you didn’t finish that plot, wrap it up before switching tracks’.

So it looks like he’s building this giant complex mystery, and keeps promising a satisfying answer to EVERYTHING once it’s over, but it’s never over because he doesn’t know how to let shit go - there’s always got to be another twist. The Weeping Angels can’t just zap you back in time and call it a day, they need to be made an EVEN BIGGER THREAT, they gotta be able to possess you! And steal the voices of dead people! and move while you’re looking! and be the statue of liberty! and instead of leaving you alone after the time warp, they hold you prisoner for the rest of your life now! No need to explain how or why, just escalate! And of course, Sherlock can’t just fake his death, take down moriarty’s organization, and then return to solving weird crimes, nope, there has to be a bigger threat than goddamn moriarty! he needs to have a secret evil sister! and secret dead childhood friend whose represented as a dog in his memories! and maybe moriarty isnt really dead - no wait, he is - no wait, he ISN’T - no wait, he is - OR IS HE? and john can’t just get married to a nice girl he loves, NOPE, gotta be more drama, she’s secretly an assassin and on the run from the government.

Moffat just keeps building and building and building, but eventually his stories start to collapse under their own weight because he’ll never let there be an end - he just can’t let go. And eventually fans will start to get bored and annoyed with the twists, and the show that used to make them feel smart will now just make them feel irritated. And they know there will never be a conclusion to the story, so they lose interest in the characters, because there’s no struggle - its never going to wrap up, so who cares? So they stop watching, and moffat starts dropping in viewers and ratings, and tries more desperate twists to bring people back, driving away the ones still holding on… lather rinse repeat until the network finally pulls the plug and makes him walk away.

basically the sherlock scan thing made sense in the original context, in a modern setting it’s just bad writing fam

I don’t even watch Sherlock but this was wonderful to read

Someone explained very well how I feel about Stephen Moffat. I’m still pissed years later that he ruined the weeping angels for me by showing them move.
