how to write creepy stories

  • over describe things
  • under describe things
  • short sentences in rapid succession build tension
  • single sentence paragraphs build dread
  • uncanny valley = things that aren't normal almost getting it right
  • third person limited view
  • limited expressions
  • rot, mold, damage, age, static, flickering, espsecially in places it shouldn't be
  • limited sights for your mc - blindness, darkness, fog
  • being alone - the more people there are, the less scary it is
  • intimate knowledge, but only on one side

your reader's imagination will scare them more than anything you could ever write. you don't have to offer a perfectly concrete explanation for everything at the end. in fact, doing so may detract from your story.

i hate when girls feel dumb for trying to see the best in people and then end up hurt or disappointed like no!! it’s those people that were dumb for misleading you. they took advantage of your kindness and generosity, and they’ll rot for it

I've read my fair share of time travel stories and it's always interesting to see what things the characters find strange about the past/future. None of them included a modern-day character looking up at the night sky and going "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!?!" "What?" "That giant thing up there?! It looks like the whole sky is torn open and void is spilling out, oh god is this actually an alternate universe with magic or aliens?" "That's....the Milky Way. What do you mean, it's not there in the future?" (both sides are now equally freaked out)

We are so deprived of the beauty of stars and the galaxy.

Too much light polution. Our night skies are too bright to see what the night sky should look like. There's a reason people more readily believed in magic and gods when the Universe was visibly spilling open before them every night.

"is this too cliche?" who cares? bro, write what you have fun writing. stuff your manuscript full of your favourite tropes. the same themes you love. all inspired by things you grew up with. do it all. go off. load. it. up. be freeeee
