#TerrierTuesdays: At the heart of all Katelyn Sobel’s (CGS’16, CAS’18) experiences during her four years at BU is one central theme: helping people. Civic engagement is a common theme in Katelyn’s life, choosing sociology as a major for its focus on people and her public health minor for its ability to “stop issues before they happen.” In her spare time, she joined Omega Phi Alpha, BU’s community service sorority, which she says is the place where she met her best friends at BU. But, it was a chance encounter that led @katelynsobel to her latest volunteer project @FoodForAllApp. While working at a juice bar, a representative from the app asked her what the restaurant did with its leftover produce. Sobel realized they were throwing away valuable food, a problem facing many establishments. In response, she got involved with the startup, whose goal is to reduce food waste which restaurants legally have to get rid of by the end of business – that is, food that’s been prepared but never gets sold. The app allows users to purchase unsold meals from local restaurants before their close of business for 50-80% off normal prices, enabling users to be environmentally sustainable while saving money on dining out and food in general. Currently active in both Boston and New York, Sobel hopes to help spread the word and bring more businesses on board. “I feel like what I’m doing is really making a difference,” she says, noting the overlap with her field of study. Reflecting on her time as a Terrier, the @BU_CAS senior credits BU with providing “independence with a sense of community and making her a “more confident and well-rounded person.” “BU is a really cool place if you’re willing to put yourself out there – it’s empowering to know that just a little bit of effort makes things work. It’s a very rewarding place to be.” Following graduation, Sobel’s plans are still up in the air, but she has hopes for working in a civic organization and potentially returning to school for a graduate degree. “Anything unknown can be stressful,” she says, “but I’m very confident in my work ethic and ability to get things done. I know I’ll make something of myself.”
