Nick Grimshaw’s last Radio 1 show review – Grimmy bids adieu in big loss for the BBC

From Hunt the Sausage to Kate Moss’s prank call game, the funnyman and tabloid fixture made Radio 1 essential listening. It will be all the poorer without him

When Nick Grimshaw was given the Radio 1 breakfast show presenting job in 2012, it wasn’t merely a personnel change – his appointment marked a meaningful generational shift. The previous host, Chris Moyles, was known for his blokey banter and litany of politically incorrect jokes. Grimmy was his decidedly un-laddy replacement, a radio funnyman for a more inclusive age – one where casual bigotry, or even just hurting people’s feelings, was no longer a laugh.

Now, as Grimshaw hangs up his headphones – hot on the heels of fellow Radio 1 stalwart Annie Mac – it’s time to take stock of the youth-oriented entertainment epoch he has helmed for over a decade. While Grimshaw never courted controversy, he certainly wasn’t bland. In fact, his vaguely camp, intensely pally style didn’t sit well with everyone, and his breakfast tenure was plagued by reports of low listening figures. But for those on his wavelength, Grimshaw made Radio 1 seem an unbeatable start to the day for the first time in a lifetime – and the phrase ‘Radio 1 comedy’ no longer a contradiction in terms.

anniemacmanus Nick Grimshaw is doing his final show for @bbcradio1. He is a man that is loved with unending devotion by his plethora of friends because of how god damn special he is as a person. Generous, kind, good from the inside out. He radiates it. That’s why it’s so fun to listen to him on the radio. Because of that remarkable warmth and wit.

Here’s what you need to know about Nick.

As someone who has had a weird reputation in the press for being a ‘friend of celebrities’, I have never met anyone who is less discerning when it comes to people and status. This is the man who always makes a point of speaking to every security guard at a shop door to make sure they don’t feel left out. People always speak to the shop assistants he says! The security guards don’t get a look in! Nick has time for absolutely everyone. He loves people and people love him. It was a running joke that if you invited Grim around your house, you never knew who he would show up with. It could be a producer from radio 1, his second cousin from Manchester or harry styles. Sometimes all three.

These three videos are some easy to find examples of how much fun we had together. The last video is my favourite ever video of Grim, just because I think it sums him up. From the kid doing full on costume dramas on his living room carpet for his family to the man always ready to do whatever it takes to make you laugh.

Thanks for making me laugh every single day for the last 6 years Nick and for bringing light into all of our days. You are so special. And so fucking loved. And I am so excited to see what you will do next.

That was actually perfect. Harry doing a message allowed him to be so heartfelt and not distract from it being nick’s day I’m so happy ☺️

“You just try to say what’s on your mind, really, and try to be as open and honest as possible. The funny thing is, people come up to me in the supermarket and say ‘that thing you said about tomatoes three weeks ago, that really changed my life’. And I’ll have absolutely no idea what I said about tomatoes. It’s a hell of a responsibility.”

- Nick Grimshaw, Radio 1 legend and casual, tomato-based changer of lives
