- Caw4B's : ANIS AND THE SERPENTS -

Anis Rusli makes another snakey return with a mild change in her design. Anis Rusli (Pronounced as: A-knee-s Rue's-lee) is a character based on a local Malaysian Legend.

Legends among village folk and fishermen in some parts of the Malaysian Peninsula tell tales of a mysterious phenomenon that they witnessed and survived to tell the tale. A creature that is suggested to be larger than the boats due to the amounts of bubbles it produces from beneath the murky waters.

The Sulur Bidar (Su-lur Bi-da-r) is a Man-eating carpet monster who is said to look like a normal carpet/Tikar (a type of woven mat) with snake heads for tendrils on each corner. In some illustrations, they are described to have a beautiful woman's head as a lure.

If you ever get curious and get too close. The Sulur Bidar will release a foul odor. Described to have a disgustingly old chicken eggs smell. The creature will then unleash its snake heads and drown its victims like a burrito to be consumed.

The legends say, the Sulur Bidar is a type of Jin/demon that likes to disturb/eat mortals. However, modern explorations believe that its a scientific phenomenon called, Oil and Gas. Which releases a lethal gas known as Hydrogen Sulphide.

- Meet ANIS RUSLI -

Anis Rusli is the human torso part of this body. A beautiful and rather young-looking girl who dwells on both the surface but mostly living in the wild by the local rivers. By appearance, she is about twenty-one-years-old or so but her actual age is centuries older.

In public, Anis is elusive. Often attempting to avoid contact. She is seen covering up from face to bottom in layers of clothes to avoid suspicion. However, once you get to know her, Anis is actually a cheery girl who is both kind-hearted and fiercely protective. Her serpent sisters are named as the following;

  • Tepi The Left - The Dominant and aggressive striker.
  • Depan The Bottom - The Mobility, muscle and biggest eater.
  • Belakang The Right - The Assistant and silly little jokester.

As a unit, They function in perfect synchronicity. Anis plans and leads her team. Depan moves defensively as the limb to avoid blind spots. Lastly, Tepi and Belakang strike opponents in turns.

- Anis Fun Facts -

  1. The name; Anis is of Arabic origin. Meaning; genial or close friend.
  2. Anis's voice is described as "sweet and soothing; may put you to sleep."
  3. Anis's hair color is described as; Raspberry. A rather maroon-ish red with hints of purple in the mix.
  4. Anis is a natural Bilingual. She is fluent in, Malay and English. She knows a little bit of Mandarin and Cantonese through Chinese and Hong Kong Dramas.
  5. Anis and her sisters share a secret language. Some would even say its technically Parseltongue but Anis replies in Malay (Which is her native language)
  6. The names of the Serpents is a reference to local icebreaker game known as [Tepi, Depan, Belakang] Translation; Side, Front, Back.
  7. Contrary to her actual species, Anis hates eating humans and considers them as "junk food" She eats normal human food.
  8. Anis's sisters however, eats regular snake food such as rats, bird eggs or other small mammals.
  9. In MTCR, Anis is nicknamed as Guardian of the Emerald Forest and the Serpent Witch of Kingshaven.
  10. Anis is inspired by three core characters; Sucy Manbavaran, Misato Katsuragi and Olivia "Liv" Octavius.

Honestly be pretentious as fuck about the stuff you create. Do a press release for your fanfic updates. Do a Q&A about your webcomic. Make fake merch designs for your OCs. Commission "official" book covers. Very few of us will ever get to a stage where something we've created Makes It Big but even if you have an audience of 5 people plus a shoelace fucking indulge yourself and pretend!! It's the only way to live!!

Sounds like something Todd McFarlane (creator of the Spawn comics) would say. But yes. Totally agree. Hype yourself up. Create like no one is watching, because no one is watching.

- Team JSH X Owen -

21 April 2024 Marks the date where Jamie officially returns and joins the group. So, likewise. Owen officially joins the team and become team JOSH.

Here we have the characters handling little Owen differently. Sadie handles him with care, Hector uses him casually like tool and Jamie lets him rest on her head like a buddy. Little fun fact, Owen is about the size of basketball.

Their dynamic with the cursed item is different. I also wanted to try a different type of finishing. I wanted to give them that overlay of bold words. Something a little different from the regular design.

The reason why I make them individually. It's a good line in the metaphorical sand on my Instagram. A progression season.

I'm at a loss for the lack of traffic but I'm not going to care for it as much. Feel free to find [Me on Instagram] if you like.

What you see here is what you'll see there, just worded differently. I might do another thing this week. Perhaps for Anis, which will clash against Sadie's birthday.

Bruh, your world is confusing as hell. Like, pick a lane man! 🤦‍♀️

You can't put all your eggs in one basket, bruh. It may feel confusing now but I like it because it keeps things exciting.

So, no. I won't just "pick a lane" I'll pick and choose which lane to detour. Like a famous clown once said.

Sometimes I like to write about Team JOSH, sometimes about Anis. If I'm going to have a host. I prefer multiple choice.

The fog will eventually clear and all will be catalogued. Give me time~

- Anis got a Makeover -

I've been revising my beloved snake girl recently. She's such a page hogger! One drawing of her in crazy pose, she'll take over the page.

I've been experimenting with her hair style too. About a while ago. I ran a poll on [My Instagram] to help settle a debate.

Turns out, a majority of the audience loves Anis wearing a sporty ponytail (labelled as B) after listening to the crowd. I drew her in more and more with the ponytail.

Still, she maintained that one-sided hair cover as a nod to the past. Her closest contender is the fishtail (labeled as C) short by 5%. This new version calls for another color makeover.

I'm thinking of changing her hair color to silver gray, bright gray, white or something like Frieren. Since Anis is a lot older than she looked.

Story wise, I really like the idea for Anis to join team JOSH but, I also like that Anis can be big enough to be in her own story.

Like say, being the forest guardian. One who watches over the bestiary, the people and the abnormal ones. This might be how I will introduce Professor Anderson but as a way, way background character.

It's a lot of clean up now but in due time. You'll see Anis Rusli in her official look eventually.

- Team JOSH: Enter Owen! -

Little update for you guys. This post officially welcomes Owen The Twiggmun into the MTCR universe. An official profile will be out eventually but here is your main team now.

For now, a brief history. Owen is pseudo creature. He was created from a botched experiment to use Omnibeast Compound for a new element. Since his creation, Owen was isolated and kept away from the world for years until one night, Sadie mac Lir and Hector Dagger infiltrated the base and stole Owen away.

Since then, Owen has become the team's tanker. Capable of taking lots of hits and land them back in situations. He also welcomed Jamie Robyn a little later when the trio was outmatched in a certain incident. From an out of story view, Owen is the "archetype pet" he is generally non-verbal and more action based.

As a product of the Omnibeast Compound, Owen has the adaptable ability of said compound which allows him to change between abilities found in The STAB System. (Stan, Tide, Ange and Bolt)

Owen can also be seen wearing a variety of suits build for his unique abilities, each with custom shells. There will be more to come of Owen in the future with different shells and suits but for now,

Owen is in!

- Source Comparison -

Something I wanted to point out, This final product used two different doodles of the same pose but with mild alterations.

With paper, I try to draw as much as I can to make it looked finished. once I proceed to digital, I had to look at which pose is good to mix and match with.

So you can see, Sadie and Owen uses Image 1, Hector and Jamie uses Image 2 and even so, It improved so I can really go for the details and closeness. I try not to leave gaps between subjects.

In other news. I've been drawing a certain popular snake girl lately. I ran a little poll on [My Insta] and a lot of people like this signature sporty girl ponytail look.

I might do another post to change Anis Rusli's hair color because I'm planning to put Professor TBA away from the main series for a moment. Its all reshuffling for now but I'm pleased that people like this new Anis. She looks so proud!

I think, I'll have another post out for Owen this coming week, provided if I can get it done on this Wednesday but uh...yeah.

The Power of Stop-Motion

Media in today's standard is quick and easy. Rarely is a show more than 2 hours long or 13-epiodes per-season. With that, animated movies are a lot slower than the typical films.

There is a discussion on if animation is suitable for film purposes and while it is often shunned by the Golden Globes or the Oscars or other awards. The very few outliers can prove these awards and the world very wrong.

But that is not what we will be talking about today. Because while animation is popular, there is a dark horse among its sphere. One with a rich history and strong filmography that should be shared. Let's talk about;

- Have I possibly gone daffy? -

Stop-motion is a film making style that compiles multiple still images of an object being physically manipulated in small movements into one whole scene.

Majority of Stop-motion films and videos use [Clay Animation] or [Paper Animation] with several more varieties of new innovations emerging under the umbrella of stop-motion. The most popular of them in the modern era towards kids is [Lego animation] which is the manipulation of Lego models in motion.

The earliest trace of Stop-motion in films is the 1898 short [The Humpty Dumpty Circus] by Albert E. Smith and James Stuart Blackton which is said to be a lost media. To compensate, please watch [A Tribute to Stop Motion]

In its early concept, Stop-motion was used as a method to create impossible things or do practical effects under budget constrains. Such as the iconic King Kong scene at the Empire State building. Since then, Stop-motion has evolved into a full production industry. From Indies; [Righteous Robot] to Juggernauts; [Laika Studios]

- Shimmer a Little at The Edges -

Unconventional media such as stop-motion is often not a style suited for every story. Its a rather expensive type of media that requires worthy innovations top break the niche barrier. Just looking at Laika Studios alone, we see that they've develop a lot of interesting ways to improve visual effects while staying to their stop-motion roots.

One perfect example is seen in < Kubo and the Two Strings > where the animators need to create water in a still image world that feels natural. [A Perfect Storm] one other part of the stop-motion puzzle is the iron-willed discipline it to conceptualize, animate and edit a production that can take about 3 to 5 years to complete. More so of a time frame than a normal film.

This difficult curve lead to budgeted methods such as using models that already exist to tell new stories. Such as; Legos or with crude multi-jointed figures of existing characters. [MOONSHINE]

While I may say its crude, the low budget production is the selling point. Assisted with sound bites taken from gaming sessions or from shows featuring a lot of inside jokes and memes. Also, its hilarious to see a Teletubby turned into a Eldritch monster.

These attempts to make stop-motion productions accessible has captured the attention of other like-minded channels to collaborate and elevate one another. [ERB: Harry Potter vs Luke Skywalker]

- For Better Tomorrows -

With all that is said, what is the power of stop-motion? As a media that is tediously overlapping across processes. What are the better tomorrows for our inanimate subjects?

I like to think, that as filmmaking grows. Stop-motion will continue to remain as a sacred tug against live action films and traditional animation. It can be used to tell complicated stories with concepts that may look strange if its adapted in a live action.

As I have mentioned in [The Beautiful World of Hilda] animation's greatest strength is simplification. Stop-motion takes the opposite side of that philosophy.

Its a higher level of world building of the materials with willingness to accept mistakes and ruggedness that gives them that little flavor of life. As an actual touchable thing, the various cartoonish styles can take on a whole new dimension to heighten the style and give it that detail that is less polished.

Stop-motion shows that filmmaking magic can still exist despite already knowing the tricks. Its a media where every frame shown has a significant purpose that invokes a specific flow. That's the power of stop-motion.

- Personal Favorites -

To be honest, it's been a while since I've seen a stop-motion film. This came up to me when I recently watched < Wendell and Wild > and that got me thinking about discussing the topic.

Open Question, what is your favorite Stop-motion film? List 5 and why in just a few words.

  1. [Coraline] - it was my most memorable introduction to stop-motion films. I love how whimsical and dark its iconography is.
  2. [Kubo and The Two Strings] - an epic adventure following a gifted Shamisen player. It's a beautiful film about a trio of unlikely characters trying to work together and achieve a goal.
  3. [ParaNorman] - while not the best film. I do like it because I feel very sorry for the "villain" Aggie. I like the adorable moment between her and Norman.
  4. [Corpse Bride] - Tim Burton at his prime, this film. I love how this is the beginning of stop-motion making ghosts out of blue or green skin.
  5. [Isle of Dogs] - against the typical answers. I wanted to highlight a unique entry. Bryan Cranston being Chief is hilarious and it's such a fun cast. I love their dry dialogue.

Now, upon researching for this post. I discovered that I have a few stop-motion films I have yet seen. So, I'm gonna go watch them and get back to you. Hahah

Describe your characters in a tweet. (140 words) Go!

Gosh, I have six. Let me see...

Sadie mac Lir

Based on Lucy Pevensie and Clara Oswald. Spunky and Clever. Team leader, friendly and sociable. Clearly the most favored child. (108 characters)

Jamie Ann Robyn

Was named Agnes in honor of my college housemate. Always a bright soul. Ginger because Kim Possible. Almost didn't make it. People's favorite. (120 characters)

Hector James Dagger

First character ever made. Hero turned villain turned anti-hero. Has a tough and bad boy image. A little temperamental but is actually a big softie in private. (133 characters)

Madam' Anis Rusli

Birthed from Kapoya’s OC persona. Based on the cryptid; the Sulur Bidar but slightly altered. Loves cuddles and lame jokes. Probably owns an ASMR channel. (130 characters)

Professor Timothy Brian Anderson

Put simply, he wasn't meant to happen. But very quickly beloved. Inspired from The Magnus Archives and the old design for Hector. An eccentric and intense fellow. (136 characters)

Owen The Twiggmun

Recent character. Not technically a creature. Was from a botched experiment. In reality, I just wanted a pet character. Can switch between different shells. (133 characters)

Not as tough as I thought. Haha~ But it's a fun challenge nonetheless. I'm using old images because I didn't have anything new as of yet. Bit busy and tired nowadays but;

I'm gonna tag a few friends but really, anyone can join;

- Owen got a little Weird -

I'm a little hesitant to share about Owen's development because the actual post didn't do so well. [READ ME]

On top of that, the post on Zutomayo also didn't do as well. [READ ME] Nevertheless, I wanted to share some development going on behind the scenes.

Owen is fitting in well. He is loved equally by everyone. The unusual thing is, it got me thinking about Owen's potential as a combat assistant.

Enter this muscle giant suit. I named it, the Delta Suit for now. Its a suit meant for horde attacks. When Owen wears the suit, he can take heavy hits and hit back when needed. Similar to Iron man's Hulkbuster or Baymax when in his combat suit.

It also got me thinking about adding more suit types for Owen under specific tasks. There is also a suit based on the Hoodlites to help him blend in with the Hoodlites and for stealth missions.

I called it, the Hood suit. Not a creative name but it's a placeholder for now. And more concepts to come.

It's helpful that Owen can fit in specific suits to assist the team with their lack and it adds with their dynamic. Sadie is the adoptee. Hector is the mechanic and Jamie might be the chemist to help increase the suit's power. So, yeah.

- Some Plans in Motion -

Alright, I figured I should journal this for myself. So, I can't go back on my word. The roaster now is mainly, Team JOSH. (Jamie, Owen, Sadie and Hector)

Assisting adults will be Professor Timothy Brian Anderson and Madam' Anis Rusli. In total, I have six characters.

Creature wise, I really wanted to push their designs with unique features. However, it's gotten out of hand so. I hearby declare;

The Salkites and Brawnkles will be discontinued.

This however, doesn't mean that I will stop completely. It just means that, they are no longer suitable for the narrative and will henceforth, be removed from the main series. For now.

Your favorite critters, The Hoodlites will be reshuffled, get upgrades and a hierarchy soon. The Omnibeasts and The Wilfies will return.

The Omnibeasts were done reluctantly because my dumb ass made them official on the page by impulse. Nevertheless, I'm not backing down from that rule.

If it's up, it stays up.

On that topic though, it does bring up the subject of the Power Gauntlets and what role they will play to the hierarchy of the Hoodlites. Perhaps I might go back on my initial plan to make a gauntlet user akin to a Toa (Bionicle) /a champion of sorts.

All in all, the plan now is to work internally. At the same time, cleaning up externally. Removing any excessive bits that no longer interests me.

Again, no one should take my word for it because it's not set in stone yet. Until it's up on the other page. But that's the plan.
