Art Lover’s Holiday Gift Guide: Picks from Mar Dixon

Arts Emergency Membership / Art Fund Membership - £5-£96 (Depending on Level)

Whether you purchase a member for your local museum or a national one, the money will go a long way.  It’s also something many people don’t purchase for themselves.  In UK I highly recommend Art Fund or Arts Emergency - each one provides a unique and broader scope with the money.

WearableTech (Google Glass) -  £1000

2015 is slated to be the year of wearable technology.  The choices have grown over 2014 from smartwatches (Apple Watch slated for first quarter 2015), fitness bands, Google Glass and more the selection is just going to continue to grow. How does this fit in with museums and art galleries?  I believe more culture venues are going to be exploring wearable technology and the use of iBeacons so why not bring your new tech with you?

Miho Deer Heads - Price: £24 - £90

I have 4 of these and am always on the look out for more. Admittedly these are for people who have a bit of wall space and/or someone who will appreciate the out-of-the norm gift. They are fun, quirky, decorative and look good in any room.  Plus, they are really easy to assemble (although I failed, my 12 year old managed).  They never fail to bring a smile when people come to visit.

Mar Dixon is as passionate about Art as she is passionate about Art Culture. She is the facilitator of several workshops on museums, wearable tech and a bonafide knowledge sharer. Mar is the found of several projects includeing Museum Camp, Teens in Museums and also runs the Ask A Curator Day on Twitter.

You can find Mar talking all things culture and Google Glass on twitter at mardixon or on tumblr at @mardixon

I'm quoted in @DiscoverMag magazine article about Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health campaign (in partnership with Discover and @SciStarter). This is in the December issue, on newsstands now.
