Ouchhhhh. Happy ending because I can’t not.
Back To A Time When I Loved And I Meant It
“I don’t understand?” Race cried desperately, staring at his... ex boyfriend. “Can’t we talk about this? Can’t we talk about us?”
“Us?” Spot looked away. “There is no more us.”
Race couldn’t help the subtle squeak of shock that escaped his throat. “Spottie...”
“Don’t call me that.” He snapped.
Race flinched. “I don’t understand. What did I do? We were fine yesterday.”
“Well now it’s today. And we’re not fine. We’re over.”
Race wiped his face as the tears started flowing more freely. “Why!?” He shouted. “Can’t you at least tell me why?!”
Spot didn’t look at him. “You know why.”
“No! No I don’t know why! Yesterday you told me you loved me for the first time. Today you’re telling me we’re done. I’m not leaving this apartment until I get an explanation.”
“You cheated on me!”
Race blinked. Of all the possible explanations, he was not expecting that. “What?”
“I know you kissed that guy in the bar. I can’t believe you betrayed me like that, after I said... after I told you... you know how hard that is for me to say! You know how hard it was for me to open my heart again and to mean it! And you broke that trust immediately!”
Race was just confused and hurt now. “I didn’t kiss anyone? Spot, I don’t know where you’re getting this information from but I didn’t cheat on you.”
“Oh yeah?” Spot pulled out his phone and opened it to a photo, shoving it in Race’s face. “What’s this then?”
Race blinked a few times to focus his teary eyes on the phone screen. It was a photo of Race and his ex-boyfriend kissing at a bar. Four years ago. It was Derek’s twenty-first birthday if he remembered correctly and Albert had taken the photo.
“Spot-“
Spot lowered the phone. “Hard to deny now isn’t it?”
“Spot that photo is four years old. It’s of me and my ex on his twenty-first and Albert took the photo. I don’t know how you got that because I deleted it off all my social media when we broke up. But I did not cheat on you. Look at the shirt. That’s the shirt I gave to goodwill along with the rest of the stuff Derek bought me when we started dating. Don’t you remember?”
Spot stared at him. “But... someone texted this to me anonymously... they said it was from last night...”
“You’d trust some anonymous number over me?” Race whispered, hurt.
Spot looked down. “I panicked.”
“Can I see the number of who sent it?”
Spot nodded and opened the message stream, passing the phone back to Race.
Race studied the number, placing the familiarity of it in his brain. “That’s Derek’s little brothers phone number. I’ve had to block him from my phone. He was always a little shit but once we broke up he started harassing me on behalf of Derek.” He shook his head. “I don’t know how he got your number, but he was trying to break us up. You fell for it.”
Spot chewed his lip as he took his phone back. “I’m sorry. I should’ve asked you about it first.”
Race sighed and rubbed his face. “It’s okay. I understand. After everything you’ve been through I would’ve believed it too.” He stepped closer. “But baby... I haven’t thought of anyone else since I met you. Not even a slight thought of even holding hands with anyone else. I would never, ever cheat on you. I’ve been cheated on before, and it was the lowest I’ve ever felt, you know that. I love you, Sean Conlon. Hurting you would be my personal hell.”
The tears flowed down Spot’s cheeks and he wrapped his arms around Race tightly, burying his head in his chest. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I- I love you too.”
He kissed the top of his head, taking a shaky breath. “It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s just one big misunderstanding. We’re okay, right?” He asked nervously, voice cracking slightly, throat sore from sobbing.
“Yeah.” Spot murmured softly. “We’re okay.” He looked up at his boyfriend. “I’ll never doubt you again.”
“Let’s not promise that.” Race murmured. “It’s okay to doubt people you love, and to question things. Blind faith can be dangerous. All I need is a promise that you’ll talk to me about it, so we can work it out together.”
Spot smiled a little “I can do that.”
“Then we’re golden.” Race pecked his lips. “Let’s go inside. I want to cuddle you until the sun comes up.”
