In these parts, they say, if you are lucky when wandering the wastes between city and town, you may encounter a truly exemplary creature. Its skin, like that of the rhinoceros, plates its body in geometric folds; its feet are like four enormous sand-dollars, pleasing to the eye and rapid in their movement. Its snout is broad with the same placid strength as a great ox and its breath is heavy and warm as the same, but its eyes flash so like those of a lion at night that no traveler could believe it truly tame for long. The name of this beast? Toyota Corolla.

"zillennial" isnt enough i think we need to introduce three microgeneration labels for everyone born between 95 and 2005 based on how covid fucked them up because i really believe that being in your early 20s and trying to figure out how to pay rent in the pandemic, graduating highschool in 2020 and having to pause your transition to adulthood, and zoom highschool created wildly different types of traumatized people.

if u were under 25 and both ur stimmy checks went directly to rent, youre now aging really poorly and more pessimistic than even the worst millennials.

if you had to abandon your plans to move out/start working/go to college bcs of the pandemic, youre like one minor catastrophe away from domestic terrorism

if you attended more than a year of zoom highschool youre unsocialized like a feral kitten and probably mildly illiterate

during peak pandemic i couldnt afford to leave my abusive ex, had to get a flip phone bcs my phone broke and i was too poor to replace it.... meanwhile my young zoomer coworkers spell "diagonal" as "daiginil" on the order forms i have to read. to me this is a much much starker divide than who remembers 9/11 really well.

i do enjoy "living weapon" characters but specifically living weapons who did in fact do absolutely horrific things which at least a part of them enjoyed and thought was good and right at the time, and that no amount of not knowing any better or guilt they feel in hindsight will ever make up for. i love living weapons who are "irredeemable", and no it's not their fault that they were made that way or pointed in the directions they were by the hand that wielded them, and yes they are victims, but so were their victims. living weapons who some people will never be able to forgive, but who still wake up every day and try to do better than what's expected of them. a sword that uses its blade to cut wheat to make bread for the people who once lived in fear of its arc falling on their heads.

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.
