Saigenos Week: Day One (AU)

Welts ran below his fingers like the crests of waves. Thick and thin, red and angry, they rose and fell in spider web configurations. Slowly, he traced them, fascinated by the agonizing pain they echoed, even now, long after the damage had healed. Slowly his fingers approached the valley, the crux of where the angry flesh welded into smooth, hard metal. Genos flinched, a grimace flitting over his face before he could get back into control.  “Did it hurt?” Saitama hadn’t spoken since his fingers touched Genos’ scars, genos’ past. Would it end? Their brief moment of connection was brittle - it could snap at any moment. Even breathing seemed hard, the tension coiling between them. Genos opened his mouth, but words failed to come. Instead, he nodded once and turned his head. It hurt. It was impossible to explain. As if pain itself was slowly clawing your soul into pieces, the solace of your mind rended into shreds as it threatened to distort your reality.  “Does it still hurt?” Saitama hadn’t lifted his fingers, still pressed at the junction of man and metal. Genos’ shoulders quivered below his touch.  “No.” the curt response hung in the air for a moment, vibrating between them. Words unspoken, the pain they both understood, “And yes. It always will. It’s... The flesh. The pain is gone, the moment is gone, but it remembers. It will always hold onto it. I will never be free from it.” Genos looked back at the man beside him. Both stripped of clothes except their skivies, sitting so close and yet worlds apart. Angry welts of red and white stemmed from Saitama’s right leg, right above the knee. They curled around and leg straight to his hip. It wasn’t the man’s only scar - his body was littered with them, splattered across almost every inch. Some invisible, some like the leg a focal point. Unlike Genos, Saitama’s scars did not meld into metal. They remained empty. Genos’ eyes lingered on the residual limb, his face scrunched with worry and confusion. “Doesn’t it hurt you?” Taking the younger man’s hand in his, Saitama placed the cool metal digits against the welts. “Not much anymore. I’ve taken time to get used to it. Something that I uhm... I don’t think you got to do.” No, Genos thought, that’s true. His loss was mended with metal immediately. And now.. Touching the skin of his... whatever Saitama was now, gave him no sensations.  “Genos.” Blinking, he realized for the first time he was crying. Ugly tears rolled down his cheeks, “Genos, it’s okay. It’s going to be okay. We’ve lost a lot, but...” Saitama brought him into his arms, wrapping around Genos like a blanket, “We will gain so much more.”

It's Too Much Trouble

Concerning the latest OPM update (spoilers ahead)…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that we get to see Genos stay with his beloved Sensei longer yet I can’t help but wonder, is that really ok? To go so completely against your own wishes based on another person’s decision. Granted Saitama is not holding Genos back at all so it’s like “dude, it seemed like you really wanted to transfer so what are doing?”

I think ONE is about to lay another motherfucking preaching upon us and this time it’s gonna be in OPM

But I can already tell you young ones (so that you don’t end up like me) that doing what Genos is doing is a bad idea. Do not limit yourselves because of the people who surround you–even if they’re dear to you. And yeah taking decisions always comes with the risk of failing but you have to live the life you choose rather than sit and home and think of the what if’s. Sounds cheesy I know, but it’s true–sometimes wanting to hold onto people so strongly can mess you up.

I hope that I am wrong and completely misinterpreting the message here, but ONE is the type of dude to say that so we’ll see what happens…

Yeah, same tbh

Genos’ reasoning for staying with the HA made me laugh because it was so unexpected and SO GENOS. But that laugh got stuck in my throat really quick after I realized that he seems to be putting Saitama over everything else in his life, disregarding his own wishes and decisions along with it.

Saitama didn’t even bring up any important points AGAINST joining the Neo Heroes, he’s just too lazy. Staying with Saitama for no other reason than staying by his side is really cute, but honestly, this is concerning behaviour.

Yeah this is why my first reaction wasn’t “Yay that’s decided!” but, “I feel like Saitama is about to tell Genos to go.” Maybe he won’t but he really should, given the situation. I don’t trust this Neo Heroes thing at all, it makes me think of something like Claw in MP100, but like you said, Saitama didn’t argue against it effectively even if it seems like he has the same concerns. He just said he didn’t want to go, so Genos suddenly said he’d stay. In the timeline, they’ve only known each other 2 months. That’s a little bit crazy. Genos is super attached to Saitama and I appreciate that, but not when it doesn’t seem to be backed up for good reason. It’s not like going to Claw - I mean, the “Neo Heroes” - would mean he has to be away from Saitama forever. I kind of want him to go tbh and realize that it was a bad choice and for Saitama to realize he misses Genos while he’s gone.

While I do somewhat agree, it’s also worth taking into consideration that this isn’t atypical or unexpected from Genos because of his backstory.

He went through *severe* trauma. I would be much more surprised if he was willing to leave Saitama now that he is so comfortable with him. That’s why I was telling everyone not to worry too much about them separating. ONE could have gone either way, but this is in line with Genos’s behavior.

Which is not to say that it’s healthy or the decision in his best interest, by any means. But some trauma survivors can often have difficulty taking steps towards situations where they will be less comfortable.

Oh god yeah, our boy has been through hell. But I don’t think anyone is saying it’s weird. It IS really expected of Genos at this point, it’s in character to follow Saitama to the ends of the earth, but the point is that it’s not healthy for him to do this. It’s not healthy for him to limit himself against what he clearly wants to do (even if what he wants to do isn’t healthy either), it’s not healthy for him to almost blindly follow someone, even if he did pick himself a good one (although honestly Saitama can be an oblivious, insensitive ass sometimes. Just a little.)

I’m not saying the revenge is healthy either, because it’s super not. Before Saitama, Genos was clearly on some sad arc where he’d inevitably end up killing himself, either by fighting the cyborg too prematurely (despite his efforts to get stronger) or by actually succeeding and then… having zero purpose to keep living bc he put all of his stock into his ‘mission’. He’s not dealing with his trauma appropriately, for sure, and I’m not sure if the story will ever really address that well. I hope it does, but I’m not gonna count on it.

Getting attached to Saitama is slightly better than just throwing his life into the hunt for the mad cyborg, but… he still needs to be thinking for himself, living for himself, not just obsessively following one thing or another? If Saitama had given good reasons to doubt the Neo Heroes than that would’ve been great, because Genos seems convinced of them. But he changed his mind based on seemingly nothing except that Saitama wasn’t going. And no, I don’t think going would be good… but I wonder if staying would be worse? Worse for their relationship in the long run. It seems like at any moment Genos could get pretty fed up with Saitama and actually just break off. I was almost sure that after the “dazzling” comment, Genos would think Saitama didn’t care and leave. It’s good that Genos realized, he’s only assuming Saitama thinks ill of him, it’s his own thoughts and not Saitama’s, but still. I don’t know. I think if we want Genos and Saitama to stay together as end game (which I do, personally. I don’t care if ppl consider it romantic or just bros for life), then it might actually be better for Saitama to encourage him to go to the Neo Heroes, or at least to make up his mind himself. Like I said, I think Genos would uncover some shit to change his mind (HA and NH are just both so shady) and Saitama would hopefully realize how much Genos impacted his life and that it’s actually duller without him around. Then they could regroup and kick some ass.

But ONE is in control, so he’ll probably have a totally different plot path in mind, but this is just my thoughts, one possibility.

I’ve been grimacing at the whole update. Not that it is a BAD update, but that it is really negative to both characters and becoming increasingly unhealthy. I won’t rehash what’s been said because I believe it’s already been covered - Genos needs to be encouraged to seek out the New Heroes. (also Sai needs to be encouraged to change) I am wondering, though, if perhaps Genos can convince Saitama to go with him, or a third party (Mumen, King, etc) can sort of shine a light on Saitama and make him realize that Genos needs him there. There’s really nothing keeping Sai in HA and his ‘laziness’ can be combatted easily with the right prodding.  Both characters are stuck in their comfort zone right now. Sai has landed a decent job, albeit one that treats him like crap, and has a nice apartment. Genos has a sort of pseudo family/important figure in his life that doesn’t care if he accomplishes his mission against the cyborg. If anything, they’re pretty close in what they do together. Both are goals/important points in their lives that neither is willing to lose.

It’d be great, and healthy if they could move on together from this point. Especially if it meant Sai willingly joining the Neo Heroes with Genos.

(Also I was wondering if Sai’s reluctance to join and his flat excuse for being lazy was due to what Genos has said prior to asking if he would join with him. Genos said something along the lines that his recommendation would go a long way to help Sai, but it might still be difficult because of how the HA has treated Sai. Basically, if Sai accepted/accepts Genos’ offer, there’s a high chance this could backfire and damage Genos’ reputation.)

Headcanon that Saitama couldn’t let all the sleeves Genos cut off his clothes to go to waste so he saved them and later sew them together and filled them with stuffing and for Genos’ birthday he got a sleeve-snake plush :o
