I sat back in my l chair and sighed. We only had 5 minutes left of Charms class, my notes were done, and I finally had a few minutes to myself to relax after a fairly stressful day. I stretched my arms out and let out a yawn and i thought i could stay like that for the rest of the day.
That was until the bell rang….
As everyone else raced to door I rolled my eyes and started to slowly gather my things to make my way out of the class. I was so busy in my own thought that I almost forgot Rowan was still next to waiting to leave together.
“Hey are you alright?” she’s asked a little bit of worry in her voice.
“Oh yeah i’m totally fine, just a little out of it ya know. “ I smiled at her.
“Are you ready for potions class?” she asked as we exited the classroom.
“Can anyone ever really be ready for Snape?” I questioned back laughing a bit.
“You got me there.” She giggled.
As we walked into Potions class I let out a little groan as we made our way to the table. I don’t think i’ve ever dreaded a class this much. Now don’t get me wrong I love potions, it just so happens to be my best and favorite subject. I do not however have the same love for our professor. I always heard how people talked of professor Snape and thought they were just over exaggerating or maybe they just really didn’t like the class. Well oh boy was I wrong. I have never met someone so pissed off. Atleast it was my last class of the day and who knows maybe it will be low stress after all.
“(L/N).” I heard Snapes ever dull voice call out.
“Guess I spoke too soon.” I said annoyed under my breath as I looked to Rowan.
“Yes professor?” I asked as I made my way over to him. It was then that i saw a familiar Gryffindor boy standing next to him nervously looking side to side.
“(L/N) for the rest of this week you will be paired up with Mr. Copper.” he said sounding almost as annoyed as me.
“May I ask why?” I said almost rolling my eyes. Now i wasn’t normally this brave when it came to talking back to Snape but hear me out. Ben Copper was most likely. No. Most definitely. The most annoying person in our year. The definition of a human jellyfish.
I’m not saying the kids awful or anything, now he’s no Merula Snyde. He just never ever stands up for himself. Not to mention he’s afraid of his own shadow along the other 5,000 fears of his. Ben’s probably to scared to pick up a book let alone be of any actual use in class. But anyways back to the conversation.
“Because (L/Y), no matter how big of a pesk you are i’m afraid you are the only competent person in the class when it comes to potions.” he said already regretting having to speak with me. “And know I will not make a habit of explaining myself to you.” he groaned.
It was then I knew that there was no getting out of it without losing house points.
“You will be paired with Copper until he can properly brew an pot of amortentia.” he said as Ben continue to squirm whenever he spoke.
“Amortentia? That’s one of the hardest potions we’ve learned to brew all year ! It took even me a few day to do it properly!-“ I spurred out ready to continue on as Snape stopped me.
“Than I suppose it’s in your best interest to start as soon as possible.” he said monotonously as we waved us off to a table across the room.
Who knows maybe I can get some house points for (your house) out of this. However this kid must be pretty bad to Snape to come to me.
“Sorry he’s making you do this, I really begged him not too.” I heard Ben pipe up from beside me as we made it to our table.
“It’s not completely your fault I guess. Just please try and keep up.” I said having already been done with today. He only nodded.
Truth be told Ben was always a bit scared of you. You were afraid to get into fights, or break the rules, not to mention seeing you in flying classes. You were completely reckless so naturally he was afraid to speak to you.
“Okay well first things first. Do you know what an amortentia potion is?” I questioned.
“It’s the most powerful love potion in the world.” he said avoiding direct eye contact. “It smells different to each person depending on what attracts them.” he added.
“Very good, now I suppose we should start with where you’re having trouble.” I said smiling a bit.
“Umm. I’m not really sure. All of it?” she said squirming a bit more. It was almost like he was expecting me to start yelling at any moment. Which in his defense this is Snapes class so i’m sure it’s a reasonable thing to expect.
“I see.” I said sighing a bit realizing this day was going to drag on even longer. “I guess we’ll start with the basics. Turn to page 394..”
It had been about 2 hours now and we were nowhere near finishing the potion let alone doing it correctly. It was almost as if he was trying to piss me off!
I know it wasn’t his fault, potions is a hard class but man Snape wasn’t kidding. I bet he paired me with Copper just to watch me suffer! Oh how I loath him.
I had just managed to help Ben properly cut the rose thorn when the bell rang.
“Thank Merlin.” I sighed to myself. I started to pack away my things until i heard Snape speak up again.
“Dont forger (L/N) your stuck with him until that potion is brewed perfectly.” he said. I can almost here the slight satisfaction in his voice.
I groaned as i thought about the task. This week was going to be much long than I thought.
Update, it has only been five days and i would say i’m ready to pull my hair out. When Snape said this kid can’t brew a potion. He meant this. kid. can’t. brew. a. potion. And yet I could help hope that he never learned.
Even with him being the biggest pain in the neck i’ve ever faced i had to admit I was growing quite use to his company. Even though he would barley look me in the eyes I could tell they were truly beautiful, not to mention his always messy blonde hair it smelled like lavender shampoo and i could smell it anytime i got close. There was just something about him that I found attractive I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Though that feeling was sure to fade as messed up yet another potion.
“S-sorry.” he stammered for the 20th time of the day. I could only run my temples and sigh in annoyance at this. Honestly it was like he wasn’t even trying at all !
After two more failed attempts the bell finally rang, and it was then that i knew i needed to pull out the big guns.
“Meet me in the Great Hall exactly one hour from now. I am going to teach you this potion even if it kills me.” I said as I then rushed out of the room leaving Ben there to gather his things.
Truth was he was starting to grow quite used to you as well, he would almost consider you a friend if he didn’t already assume you hated him. He could tell how frustrated he made you and to be completely honest it only made him more nervous. You were different however. Even thought you were one of the most intimidating people in the school, but now he wasn’t so sure. You were necessarily mean, in fact you were fairly pleasant to him in the beginning, however now he was sure the next time he messed up you would snap.
He tried to put his mind at ease but as everyone knows that never really worked. So instead he decided he would gather books from the library and start his studies at the Great Hall and bit early.
About 45 minutes had passed and I finally decided it was time to make my way down to the Great Hall. I gathered my books, parchment, and quill and started out of the common room when Rowan stopped me.
“Where are you going?” she questioned as i was half way out of the door.
“Great Hall to study.” I said letting out a breath, I really needed to leave so I would t be late.
“Oh. I come with you ! I need to catch up my transfigurations anyways.” she said smiling.
‘oh great.’ I thought to myself, I really didn’t feel like explaining myself at this point but now there’s no choice.
“I would love for you to come! Unfortunately i’m studying with that Gryffindor Ben Copper.”
“Oh I see.” she smirked at me wiggling her eyebrows.
“As if !” I claimed in protest, I could feel my cheeks heat up a bit. But why?
“Uh huh, then why would you be studying with him? Come on I know you must like him !” she said jumping from the couch.
“Because he’s the dumbest person in our potions class and even Snape can’t deal with him!” I said rolling my eyes.
“Sure. Sure.” she said lying back down on the couch. “Have fun on your study date.” she added winking as she said date, and with that i walked out the door.
I don’t know why her saying those things made me feel so….weird? I mean i know she was only joking but i could help but feel a bit flustered anytime she brought up those kinds of feelings. They were true of course. No way could I have a crush on Ben Copper. Sorry but not happening! I reassured myself as i walked through the doors of the Great Hall.
I was a few minutes early and figured I would have to wait on him but to my surprise he was already there. Not only did he beat me to the hall he was already studying, I’ll admit I am most definitely impressed.
I started to make my way over to him and finally caught his eye. He closed his book and look up at me as I sat down. I smiled and greet him as he did the same.
“Learn anything new while I was gone?” I joked a bit even though I was hoping he would finally get the hang of it.
“A bit….I’m afraid i’m still fairly lost.” he replied sheepishly as I looked at him. This was the first time we had ever made eye contact longer than 2 seconds.
There was always some sort of worry deep in his eyes. They were anxious and beautiful at the same time, I was starting to wonder how I never noticed before. My mind wondered off for a minute until he snapped me from my thoughts.
“(F/N)?” he questioned bringing me back to reality.
“Sorry, got lost for a minute.” I blushed a bit finally breaking the stare. Looks like he wasn’t the nervous one for once. I started to get confused as to why this is happening now. I’ve never been nervous around him before. Is this because af what Rowan said? No way. I didn’t like him before and I dont like him now. End of story.
“Alright so let’s get started.” I said clapping my hands together.
I jumped back in my bed with a loud “oof” as I replayed everything that happened in the Great Hall back.
It started out normal enough; revisions, ingredient lists, proper stirring techniques. But as time passed we both became rather board with the subject all together and decided to just freely talk.
Turns out we had quite a bit in common. We both loved reading and music, we even shared the same appreciation for potions even with how terrible he was at it. Of course I wondered how we hadn’t become friends sooner.
Well let me tell you he had an answer.
I’ll spare you the details, let’s just say it ended with me being reckless and terrifying. Me?! Reckless and terrifying?! He thought he was going to get away with that he had another thing coming. Which i’ll admit I might have gone a little to far. Every insult flew to my mind; coward, stupid, boring, he was a litter brick when it came to absorbing any information. Any option of us ever becoming friends was out the window at this point. He tried to apologize but soon backed down like always. Once a coward always a coward right?
So the whole night ended with me tell him to learn the potion himself and storming off leaving him very much speechless. The End. Goodnight.
Ben had never seen someone go from having fun and joking around to terrifying so quickly. One minute they were studying and talking and the next she was going off on him.
He immediately regretted what he had said and tried to apologize but she was already on a rampage. He didn’t think it would hurt her. He never wanted to do that. In fact he thought she would find it funny that he was scared of her at first.
Thinking about the situation again only gave Ben more anxiety. However he couldn’t understand why they things she had said hurt him so badly. He had heard it all before from countless other people. By now he was used to it, but this time was different. This time it meant something to him. He replayed the last thing she said to him over and over again.
“Well if i’m so reckless then maybe you should learn to brew the potion yourself!”
That’s when he realized, maybe he would….
It was now the next day and while she had cooled off some she had to admit the whole thing still pissed her off. The things he said weren’t necessarily that bad or even mean but for some reason they really hurt. That’s the one part she couldn’t figure out. It was Ben Copper of all people, why would anything he said hurt her? She couldn’t get him out of her head. That when the bell for last class rang throughout the castle and she was starting to wonder if she should even go. Of course she knew if she didn’t she would end up costing her house points, so she pushed away her pride and made her way to the dungeon.
By the time she got there he was already at there table with all the proper ingredients ready.
Atleast he learned something she thought to herself.
As soon as she entered the class he saw and put his head done. Guess we’re back to square one huh.
As she sat her stuff down on the table he began to work and brewing the potion and he seemed to be doing everything correctly for once. She suppressed giving him a smile as she thought back to yesterday’s events, but she still couldn’t help being truly shocked.
He continued to cut and add in ingredients perfectly and class was only halfway over by now. The only thing left was to stir it all together, but even this needed to be exact. She could tell that he was hesitant and decided give him a little help in the end. This of course didn’t mean she forgave him.
He held the spoon nervously when realized someone else hands were now on his. She helped guide his arms up to the caldron and stir 3 times in a counter clockwise direction. They could both feel the slight heat in their cheeks. Neither of them had ever felt this way before and there were only so many things it could mean.
As she removed her hands from his he looked back at her, and she saw something new in eyes. It wasn’t the usual anxiety that was usually plaster across his entire face. For once they were calm, for the first time it was as if he was actually looking at her. Once their gaze was finally broken she decide to lean in and give to potion a smell to test it. She smelled all the usual things; parchment, wild flowers, vanilla, clean robes, this time however she smelled something different. It was in that moment that she knew she was screwed.
“Do you finally have something worth my time?” Snape questioned impatiently drawing her attention away from the potion.
“Yes professor.” she stated with a slight smile, knowing the potion was almost perfect.
He gave the potion a a quick look and then proceeded to lean in and smell it. He almost seemed a bit shocked as he raised his eyebrows.
“I’m surprised (L/Y). I didn’t think it was possible to teach Mr. Copper anything and yet here we are.” he said in his same overly dull voice.
“20 points to (Y/H)” he said as she grinned widely and turned back to hug Ben. He froze at this sudden burst of affection but quickly returned the embrace. As the broke apart they still held on to each other as they gazed into each other’s eyes. Both of their cheeks heated up and as the bell rang she placed a small kiss on his cheek leaving him frozen in his place. As she quickly gathered up her things and exited the class she felt a hand grab hers a pull her back.
Before she could process anything that was happening she felt a pair of lips crash into hers and strong arms wrap around her body. She immediately melted into the kiss wrapping her arms around his neck. It was in this moment that she knew she could no longer deny her feeling for Ben any longer. After they broke apart she looked into his eyes one last time and smiled. Neither of them could believe what just happened but they couldn’t wipe the grin off their face.
For once Ben wasn’t scared and (Y/N) could tell. As she placed one last kiss on his lips he intertwined his hand with hers and they walked through the halls together happily.
At the end of the day she laid back into the grass next to Ben and sighed to herself.
“That amortentia really didn’t do that lavender justice.” she said to herself as she drifted off happily.
