Some of you have been coming for me in the tags about prone vs supine, so I want to pick up on that.

This video is about a condition in D&D called ‘prone’. The term refers to a character who has dropped or been pushed or otherwise forced out of a standing position, and details a set of penalties and effects that are applied to characters with this condition.

There is no corresponding ‘supine’ condition. And that’s not because characters in D&D are incapable of lying on their backs, or that lying on your back carries no penalties (unless you as a DM find that reasonable and decide to rule that way for the sake of pedantry). It’s because D&D uses recognisable terms as rule names, which frequently do not line up 100% to the real world terminology.

Other examples include:

-‘poison’ damage encompassing a range of toxins, the majority of which should be venoms rather than poisons

-‘armour’ class also factoring in things that aren’t armour

-‘Intelligence’ being the name for the relevant ability when a wizard accidentally fireballs the whole party

Sometimes, terms just don’t match up, and that’s ok, because the alternative is a rules set that’s even more needlessly complex

Ah, an actual example of a meaningful difference between intelligence and wisdom.

Also, same vein as poison, acid. (This vein is having a bad day.)

Gelatinous cubes and other oozes frequently meander around limestone corridors containing the bleached bones and metal trappings of their victims, completely stripped of their flesh.

D&D oozes are alkaline.

(As a GM I have ignored or negated acid resistance or weakness on a basis of pH because if a player wants to attack something alkaline with something acid, my chemistry degree won't let me penalise them for that. Gelatinous cube + Acid spray = a salt and battery in my eyes.)

5 things your character can't do while speaking

Choked is not meant to be taken literally, an obstruction in the throat. It means they’re having difficultly speaking, they’re forcing the words out with difficulty. Often used when the character is convulsed in tears or laughter.

Hiss is a low, threatening whisper. Raw, guttural, vicious. It is NOT a literal hiss like an animal, it is a tone of voice that serves the same function. Someone will hiss that they’re going to cut your throat- a message from one person to the other.

Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, it’s a tone of voice that serves the same function. It’s raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. It’s loud, it’s showy, it’s intimidating. It’s very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. I’ll take ALL of you on. Even if they’re snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or they’re gonna get fucked up too.

Shriek. Come on, seriously? We’ve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but it’s funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.

Sneering is contempt whether it’s a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.
