PSA for UK Teachers

I went to an LGBTQ+ Educators conference a couple of weeks ago and they had a fantastic session on the draft 'guidance' the government published on trans pupils in December 2023 that needs to be common knowledge

The draft guidance, if/when it officially comes in (which it has not yet) will be non-statutory. This means that all schools are expected to follow it unless there is good reason not to.

This transphobic guidance would break the 2010 Equality Act, a fully ratified law. Keeping Children Safe in Education, the legal backbone safeguarding documentation, tells us that the wellbeing of the child comes first, not the 'rights' of the parent. Telling parents about a child's preferred name without their permission breaks GDPR law - as soon as a child can understand that their data is private, they are protected by this law (I have taught year 2 pupils this as part of their IT curriculum, so. Pretty much all age groups are covered by this.)

Not wanting to break fully ratified UK law is an excellent reason not to follow non-statutory guidance. This is what you tell any school personnel asking you to follow this new draft guidance. We have more legal obligation to support and protect our trans pupils than we have to follow this new transphobic bullshit.

There are so many incredible organisations and educators fighting this right now (https://tnb.org.uk/ have great resources if you want to read more) but making sure average classroom teachers can stand up and aren't cowed is the most valuable way to keep our kids alive

The Trans Pride Centre – the UK’s only trans-focused center run by trans people – will have to close its doors for good unless it raises £27,500 to keep it open to provide vital support services for the trans and non-binary community.

my step mom was asking me more questions about the nonbinary thing and after talking to me for a bit, she said "oh, so youre a rosé! not a chardonnay transitioning to a merlot, just your own unique type" which was such a middle aged white woman way to frame it, but i cannot lie gang. it did make me want to cry

Bit of a random question but if anyone has experience writing adult fic with one or more characters that are nonbinary/of an undisclosed gender, and their naked body is described in a neutral or ambiguous way, or you've read some good examples of such, please send them my way! It's something I'm currently trying to do but it's hard and I'd love to find some more examples so I can get some more ideas on how to go about it

this is an official UK government petition that they have to respond to if it reaches 10,000 signatures

So, this one is actually a lot more important than reporting and blocking spam bots. That post has 20,000 notes rn, so it would mean a lot to me if you could give the same treatment to this as you gave to that (@neil-gaiman if you're listening).

If the petition gets 100,000 signatures they have to consider it for debate in parliament.

It's a crime that Gender Recognition Reform was blocked in England, but Scottish MPs voted it into law and that the UK Parliament overturned that is in direct contravention of democracy as a whole.

It's a pretty serious big deal. Please sign, or, if you're not a UK citizen, please boost.
