Love will tear us apart: The Bughead edition (2.08)

There’s a lot of questions around Bughead post-2.08. Why is Jughead pushing Betty away? Did they even actually break up? And (this one’s gonna require a whole other post, and honestly I’m already so tired) what are we supposed to make of that Serpent Dance? 

ALL GREAT QUESTIONS. But here’s the one I’m asking to sum up Bughead in 2.08:

What does Jughead know about love after this episode?

Let’s dig in.

1. Love under pressure leads to terrible, short-sighted decisions.

What does Jughead see when he sees Betty on that stage? Does he see that she’s doing it for his own good, to protect him? It’s probably not one of Betty’s most clear-headed moments. They’re both floundering and gasping for air, and making poor decisions as a result. Betty sees her Serpent Dance as part of a bigger plan to protect Jughead because she loves him. Honestly? Not the best idea. I don’t blame Jughead for not understanding it. Besides, I don’t think he’s fully healed from their Black Hood-enforced breakup, either, so he’s not in a good place in terms of dealing with Betty’s big, elaborate plans.

Funnily enough, Jughead does the same thing for FP. He’s floundering, too. He makes all these decisions because he loves his dad, but he can’t see beyond the next corner, and as a result, they’re pretty shitty decisions. It’s an interesting parallel - one that the writers clearly wanted us to pick up on - that however things are between FP and Jughead directly affects his relationship with Betty. Because both of them speak to Jughead’s emotional capacity, which right now is dangerously limited. Which brings us to -

2. Love is all-encompassing, but it has its limits.

That final scene between Betty and Jughead was an absolute heart-wringer. What did I see? I saw a couple that absolutely loved each other but were so pressed in from all sides by the worst circumstances that they were left with SO LITTLE to give to one another. And the little that they can give to one another is so damaging, so endangering, that the only choice they’re left with was to push each other away. 

It’s heartbreaking. And I think that’s the whole point of Riverdale: this town and its failures and foibles will corrupt even the purest of loves. Love isn’t conquering anything in this town just yet. The parallels with Romeo and Juliet are not an accident: the writers aren’t just telling us that Jughead and Betty are mirrors of the titular characters, they’re also telling us that the violence and bloodthirst of Verona, which ended up consuming these “star-cross’d lovers”, can also be found in this town with pep.

3. Love is Betty Cooper.

All that being said, Jughead loves Betty. He does. So much. You see it in the twitch in his eye when Penny Peabody threatens to hurt her. You see it in his soft little wonderstruck smile when she walks into the Whyte Wyrm. You hear it in the hitch in his voice when he tells her to go home. He loves her hard. And sure, that’s not translating to a super great relationship at the moment, but the question of loving her was never in doubt. 

It’s obviously disappointing that the narrative around Bughead hasn’t consistently been one of healthy, open communication and intimacy, and that they are building so much drama and suspense around it, but I’m still here for it, and I do still believe that they will end up together in the long run. We still have 14 episodes to go, guys. Bughead is endgame, but it’s a long game. So let’s keep riding it out. Our ship is sailing through troubled waters, but we’re pressing on anyway, full steam ahead.
