why you should watch webseries
(especially small ones)
- those classics you love? I bet you someone made a webseries of it, modernized it, put a diverse cast in it, and now you’re gonna love it 10000x more
- that classic you hate? someone made a webseries of it, modernized it, put a diverse cast in it, and now you’re gonna love it
- people staring into the camera like they’re in the office all the time
- super attractive cast that is also super approachable and nice (they’re all just nerds like us)
- super creative, thoughtful and funny creators that are just as approachable (gosh you’re all so talented!!)
- like, you can have a budget of millions of dollars and still produce utter crap like “sexist white guy hero saves the world”. but wow, these webseries folks prove that even with no money, no big names, and a halfway decent camera, you can tell stories that matter.
- small fandom, but one of the nicest ones you’ll ever find.
- when showrunners fuck up in any way (which they’re allowed to do, they’re only human, mistakes are okay), they will actually listen when someone points it out, and they will work hard to do better next time.
- okay but can we get back to diversity quickly? so yeah, most webseries used to be awfully white in the beginning, but this is getting so much better. and we have all the queer characters: beautiful bisexuals who are allowed to say the word. Actual aces who use the word asexuality. Biromantic aces. Aromantic aces. Pansexual characters. Trans girls who kick ass. Trans boys who take action. Nonbinary folks of all kinds. Characters who are out and proud. Characters who come out on camera. Characters who are still questioning and working hard to figure themselves out. You’ve got characters that address the discriminations they face, but you’ve also got complete worlds without queerphobia, where everyone is just the way they are and no one ever gives them shit for it. And let’s not stop at sexuality, because we’ve got autistic characters, we’ve got characters with PTSD, with anxiety, with agoraphobia, depressed characters, etc. etc.
- tl;dr: webseries are amazing and everyone should watch them.
To get you started, here are some of my personal faves (incomplete, in alphabetical order):
The Adventures of Serena Berg (lesbian trans girl kicks ass & is a big dumbass in love with her best friend, based on Cyrano de Bergerac), Black Girl in a Big Dress (original series, title says it all), Call Me Katie (angry feminist Katie dates a loveable (?) douche so her sister can go on dates as well, retelling of Taming of the Shrew a la Ten Things I Hate About You), The Emma Agenda (Emma Woodhouse is hopeless, everyone is queer, this is the Jane Austen retelling we deserve - based on Emma), Nothing Much To Do (witty New Zealand kids are an absolute mess, except for my girl Hero who has done nothing wrong in her life ever, a webseries classic based on Much Ado About Nothing), Project Green Gables (three seasons of shenanigans, cuteness overload and some of the best characters you will ever meet aka. Anne Shirley is Black Girl Magic Impersonated, retelling of the Anne of Green Gables series), The Roedell Project (original webseries that has it all: beautiful queer kids, bad puns and finger guns, awesome transmedia storytelling and creepy conspiracies), Twelfth Grade (Or Whatever) (the most adorable nerds you will ever meet, the highest count of people saying the word “bisexual” in any series ever, it’s like someone (Jules) took She’s The Man and made it better - retelling of Twelfth Night), The Uncanny Upshurs (teenage witches who deserve a break. includes: Me crying over all my perfect, beautiful kids, lots of witty banter, everyone is queer, big-ass drama and mystery on both sides of the atlantic. original series)

Man I have never known straight dude writers to shy away from putting out stuff like ‘my thinly-veiled self-insert goes on a mediocre adventure but more importantly ends up in a love quadrangle with these four female characters who are all incredibly hot to me’, but most of the lady writers I know get nervous if they write one (1) love story where *gasp* two whole dudes compete for the same lady’s love!
So listen.
Listen.
Go out and give your warrior witch lady a magic talking panther that flies and five hot elf boyfriends (or girlfriends, or datemates, whatever) who all happily share her. Or fight over her. Whichever. Make each of them as smoking hot as you please. Indulge yourself. Live.
And this goes absolutely double for WoC and trans ladies and queer ladies and everyone else who has extra troubles with being shamed for your indulgence.
If you’re going to worry about stuff in your story it should be things like ‘is that trope racist?’ or ‘how do I fix this plot hole?’, not ‘am I putting in too many elements that I personally enjoy?’

STORY INTRO
STATUS: Currently editing first draft. Plans to begin querying in late July//early August. Seeking beta readers! INFO WORD COUNT: 40k GENRE: YA contemporary fantasy AGE RANGE: 13+ for violence, profanity, death.
SYNOPSIS: Ariel Kim is your everyday, run-of-the-mill small town teenager, from her dead end job to her love for 80s action flicks. But when a mysterious, sword-wielding boy with ice magic tries to drag her away and she accidentally murders her best friend by spontaneously combusting, her boring life starts to get a whole lot weirder.
Before long, Ari and her newfound fire magic are sent on an EPIC JOURNEY—to Arizona. Accompanied by a cynical sorcerer and a run-down Winnebago, Ari is determined to find a way to raise the dead and erase her mistake, once and for all. No matter what the cost.

Ari is our hero! Kind of. Okay, so she technically started this whole mess by accidentally killing Finn Olsen, her best friend, but she’s going to get him back! Ari is short and stocky, with cropped black hair and expressive eyes. She always seems to be getting herself into scrapes, but she’s a free-spirited and loyal person with a warm heart. (And a stubborn streak.)

Alec almost smiled at that. “What I want is irrelevant. Get out of my way.”
The antagonist of our tale, Alec is… Not talkative. He’s a short mixed kid with neatly parted dark hair, blue eyes, and a lean build. Clever, serious, and stubborn, he understands books and strategies far better than people. His magic manifests in the form of ice wolves, and he’s never seen without something pointy and dangerous in hand.

The Obi Wan Kenobi of the story, if Obi Wan were a chain-smoking alcoholic covered in tattoos who genuinely didn’t give two shits about Luke or the fate of the galaxy. He’s mysterious, kind of, but mostly just a hinderance who likes to complain. As a sorcerer, however, he knows the ins and outs of the magical world, making him an indispensable resource to Ari. (What? No, it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that he has an RV and she can’t drive. Definitely not the only reason she keeps him around. Nope.)

6. Who is the big spoon?
Logically Mars is because she’s taller (5′ 8″ to Haven’s 5′ 3″), but they switch off, tbh.
7. Favorite date activity?
They like to go thrift shopping together! They also spend a lot of time at coffee shops (but Haven always gets hot chocolate). Haven’s big on photography, and a solid half of her camera roll is just Mars trying on different clothes or drinking a latte in front of a window.
9. How open are they with their feelings?
Mars struggles with admitting her feelings about most things, but she’s more genuine and affectionate with Haven than anyone else. Haven wears her heart on her sleeve with pretty much everyone, which is part of why Mars feels comfortable trusting her with her own feelings.
