Hey, you, person who always DMs 5e and finds it exhausting and wants a break

If you live in a city or just have a shopping district near you, you can search for a game store near you, maybe a wargaming store or hobby shop. Somewhere with Magic: the Gathering cards behind glass and Vampire: the Masquerade books on the shelf.

If you find one, you can go to the counter and ask the cashier if they host ttrpgs. Strike up a conversation, mention that you're not really interested in D&D. They might have a discord server; join it and look around. If you've been reading a cool system, mayne mention it.

Now find a game. It might take a couple false starts before you find a group you gel with, but do try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Congrats! You no longer need to rely on that old group of friends of you want to play rpgs.

You have leverage now. Talk to your friends; tell them that you don't want to DM for a bit. Stand your ground, and know that you're not relying on them any more.

If the old group would rather stop playing than step up, you now have the new group to play with! Recognize that they were expecting something from you that they wouldn't do themselves, and maybe just weren't that into D&D. Do movie nights, maybe?

If one of them DOES step up, then congrats! You're now playing in two games!

And if they get really upset and try to coerce you, maybe stop giving them your time at all.

I was curious about what my wage and time, plus materials, would bring the cost of a foundation paper pieced and handquilted king size quilt to...and...

Okay, anyone willing to pay this amount will be enough to convince to make something this...outrageous. it'll close commissions for a year or two, and require frequent breaks so I don't burnout.

$23,800 USD.

$27× 900 hours + cost of materials (batting alone will be $200, 25 yards of fabric will be about what i need, i'll kill several rotary blades with all the cutting, and likely go through at least two spools of thread) = final cost

That amount of money will be what it takes to convince me to make this. If you're willing to pay for one of these now, hmu. I'll make the listing.

If you want just a king size quilt top, that's still $6150 USD. I'll need around 25 yards of fabric, a couple spools of thread (or a cone), and two to three rotary blades. This will take around 200 hours for traditional piecing. Foundation paper piecing will add another 100-200 hours easily because I have to print each section of each block, cut them out, fold along the seam lines, cut all the fabric, sew the fabric to the paper, press each seam, trim, rinse and repeat many times, sew the blocks together, remove the paper (sooooo many pieces), make the rows, and sew the rows together. So foundation paper piecing will bring the top to $11,650. For just the quilt top.

If you're 100% certain you want a king size quilt, and you're able to pay, let me know. I'll put the commission listing up for you, and promptly close commissions until further notice.

Money is good incentive.

It's 100% okay to reblog this. People need to understand why textile/fiber arts, quilts in this case, are so expensive.

The prices you see on Etsy? The $200 king size quilts and $150 queen size quilts? That's sweatshop pricing. Some of those quilt postings aren't even real. I've seen my own work listed there, priced absurdly low, and have had to file reports and claims about those listings.

Most textile/fiber art is done by hand. Keep that in mind. Remember what a liveable wage is. Do you intend to pay yourself minimum wage? Are you really that kind of manager? I'm not.

Fellow Windows 11 users: how to disable newly-installed Microsoft AI!

Folks, with the new updates that've come down recently, Microsoft has installed its "Copilot" AI app on your machine. It cannot be removed.

But it can be disabled. Here's how (courtesy of the excellent Pihko Misit, aka @smokepaw.bsky.social over at Bluesky). I've just done this to my own desktop machine, and all's well with it now.

Here's what to do:

(1) You need to have Admin rights for the machine and be logged in to the administrator account.

Now, right-click on the Start menu (Windows logo on the Taskbar.) A menu pops up; about half way down it you'll see Terminal and Terminal (Admin). Click on the Terminal (Admin) option.

(2) A DoS-like box will open. (For those of you who've never interacted with a Windows terminal window before, it looks like this:)

On the command line (i.e. the first empty line), copy and paste this:

reg add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /v TurnOffWindowsCopilot /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Then hit Enter.

If successful, you'll see a line pop up saying so. Congratulations! But you're not quite finished.

Now you need to close all programs and fully shut down the machine. A restart isn't enough, it needs to be fully powered down and started back up.

"And now," Pihko says, "ou have a NSA-like AI spy dormant on your machine. Stay vigilant, odds are it'll turn back on with future updates! Big Corporate wants you to be compliant. Don't be!"

I've been using CCleaner for years, but wow is Geek Uninstaller fantastic. way smaller, faster, and simpler to use, and best of all it has "force uninstall" for Windows and Microsoft programs that you can't normally uninstall

thanks for the tip!

good to know, thanks! I'd noticed locking it down became more challenging over time, but it's well and truly gone now thanks to Geek Uninstaller

Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.

Seriously people, learn fandom etiquette. It exists, it exists for extremely good reasons, and it's been decades in the making.

You know the saying, 'OSHA regulations are written in blood'? Yeah, that applies to fandom etiquette. We didn't make this shit up to lord it over newcomers, these rules evolved as a form of fucking self-defense and by god we'll die on this hill.

So stop putting other people's fanfictions on KINDLE UNLIMITED!!!
