never over how when patrick is defending himself for burying marx alive, grace without an ounce of hesitation, full confidence, goes, “i think he deserved it”

never over grace getting angry at a social worker for dismissing the murder of a young girl just because she was “trouble”

never over grace shutting down wayne’s tasteless dark humor at a crime scene

never over grace very passionately talking a grieving woman out of suicide

never over grace going the extra mile to go undercover and trick a creep into harassing her so she can arrest him and stop him from harming female spa staff

never over grace continuously being brave and confident enough in herself and her morals to stand up for them and for other people, even if it bends the rules or “looks bad”

i love her!! so much!!!

i’m literally just here to gush bc i’m in a “let’s love grace van pelt mood” tonight but:

i also really love how the show treats grace. WELL. i like how the show treats her beliefs, there are a few bones i’d like to pick with heller about how her character as a whole is treated, but at least her beliefs are handled nicely.

i love that the show could have easily made her out to be the joke character, the doe-eyed religious girl who constantly gets put down by the smart cynic for having faith in something that isn’t scientific or logical. she believes in god, and the occult, and is admittedly a little gullible... but she’s not punished for it, nor is it seen as a “bad thing”. it’s neither 100% a positive or a negative, it’s just part of who she is. tbh sometimes it’s even shown as being one of the things that makes her so compassionate and good at her job rather than a hindrance. her spirituality makes her come off as a bit holier-than-thou at times but it’s one of the driving forces behind why she believes life is sacred and why she tries so hard to help people.

i enjoy that she and patrick are each other’s foils and that they did bump heads a little at the beginning, but i appreciate even more that their great differences in opinion on spirituality was never a point of any real contention between them. they disagree, they move on. neither are constantly trying to prove to the other that they’re right. they don’t treat the other any differently.

it’s so refreshing to see that sort of respect not just from the show toward her character, but between the characters themselves as well.

YOU’RE CHOKING ON HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TO TRY

you have tried. you have carried the weight of the world on your shoulders and accepted more responsibilities than you have ever wanted, even intended to gain. it isn’t crushing - you are strong enough to hold it - but you are choking. you don’t know what to do with it. you don’t know where it goes, how to move this weight everyone knows you can hold onto, and do you even want to get rid of it? never. you would not give this to - force this on - anyone else. but you can’t. but you are choking on it. your body will hold it up even when you lose all the air in your lungs, and your footing, and your courage. it does not mind choking you. it seems almost designed to do so. if you weren’t wrung out you wouldn’t be doing this thing properly.

“The University of Colbridge.” He had this answer at the ready, at least. Connor swallowed, once, before he quite turned to meet her eyes - but when he did, he had resolved whatever tension was in his gut. This was something he did want to do. “There’s a memorial garden there. I’d like to see it.” Ashes scattered, there. The plaque he had found a single photograph of, online, in the background of a student’s graduation celebrations.  He had not asked explicitly, still. Connor asked, in a tone that made it clear that he did not yet know her answer: “Will you come?”

“Of course.” There was no hesitation. Of course she would come, because Connor asked, and because it mattered, clearly, that he wasn’t alone. Grace regarded him with watchful eyes, studying him in that quiet way that she must have picked up from Patrick, but didn’t pry. “I’d be glad to.”

She had to wonder, though: what sort of memorial did an Android like Connor want to see? He never “belonged” to anyone in the same sense that other Androids had belonged. He wasn’t owned by any one person who he could form an attachment to, rather she had always assumed he belonged to the entire department.

Grace pursed her lips and turned her attention to the floor. The curious questions rolling in her head were bordering on impolite, she realized. It wasn’t any of her business why Connor wanted to go. She might ask him sometime, but not today.

“Just tell me when and where you want to meet.”
