on one hand we should push for systemic change instead of individual lifestyle changes on the other hand those systemic changes might involve lifestyle changes. like we won’t be eating meat at every meal and driving to every location.

i think about this a lot wrt volume of consumption. like it’s true that fast fashion etc. is creating quantities of cheap products that are pretty isolated from what the actual demand for them is, but there’s no denying that people (including myself) still buy more clothes more frequently than is strictly speaking “good” for the environment, and shifting toward a slow fashion based future is going to mean that all of our wardrobes are going to realistically need to shrink, the whole culture around clothes shopping is going to radically change, etc.

and this is just wrt clothes, everything else is, realistically, going to need to be scaled down to some degree or another too and it’s going to be a very hard thing to adjust to i think

A while ago Falynn K. asked this question on Twitter:

"So on a tall sailing ship you have the mast, and you have the yards across it--is the yard/spar actually attached to the mast, by like i dunno, a pin or something, or is it strictly roped/lashed to it?"

This is a totally reasonable question! A lot of folks who haven't sailed square riggers might think that the yard stays put, but in fact it needs to move up and down the mast so the sails can be fully set. (Y'know how everyone's always talking about halyards? They literally haul the yard up. You're welcome.)

So to answer the question: yards are held loosely to the mast by a looped line strung with large wooden beads called a parrel. The beads roll up the mast as the yard is raised and lowered. Here's a drawover that hopefully clarifies a little:

Once you start explaining things about tall ship anatomy it's hard to stop, so there's a bit more context for how the sails work:

(These are pages from my comic A Week at Sea with OHP, which you can read online here or grab as a print minicomic here.)

Hope this is helpful!

Hello Mr. Gaiman - I have this very strong memory in my head of your voice reading out Anansi's Boys. However, after looking through all the audiobook/audio drama versions I could find online, I haven't been able to find one with you as the narrator.

A few other Gaiman fans I know told me they, too, thought there was a version narrated by you, but when I asked if any of them knew which version/production, they also came up empty.

I do have the tedency to remember-revision (such as remembering films being in color when I've only ever seen them in black and white), and I'm now wondering if this is a similar phenomenon.

Have you ever narrated Anansi's Boys? Is there maybe some discontinued audiobook version that I'm remembering (and may find if I keep looking)?

There's only the Lenny Henry audiobook.

I had five ideas, I wrote two, now I have seven

Listen. They’re called “plot bunnies” for a reason, and it’s not just because they hop around all over your brain demanding attention.

For anyone who ever asked me where ideas come from. They creep in and breed when you’re making something else.

Why is my experience of ticks so DRAMATICALLY different than others'. ???? People in the notes of my educational tick post are like "yeah i used get like 12 of them every time I walked outside but now i've only been bitten a couple times this year" ????

Y'all i've been wading and crouching in waist-high weeds and grass, stomping around in brush, even climbing and crawling on hands and knees in the woods, almost every day and i rarely pick up any ticks at all. I've only been bitten by a tick once. Like. In my life

Like i've been getting so down and dirty in random fields and thickets that I come out with random bugs on me and twigs and leaves stuck on my hair and clothes. Yesterday there was a grasshopper just sitting on my shoulder. No ticks though. And i do check!!

The consensus seems to be that I am just yucky probably?

With mosquitoes it's wildly variable. A couple years ago I got at least 50 mosquito bites at once that all turned into huge red welts and it was terrible, but over the past year I haven't gotten any at all, which is bizarre cause i've been hanging out around ponds and wetlands a lot

I'm also not allergic to poison ivy so basically I'm too powerful
