Trends of the Month: July 2020

It’s unbelievable that it’s already the end of July. This year is cruising by but we’re making the best of it. We dug into the top checked-in styles worldwide this July to review the beer trends of the summer season. Our findings were...well, let’s just say we could’ve expected this. The IPA - American style was the most checked in overall. You guys really love IPAs, don’t you?

We pulled the top 5 checked-in IPAs worldwide in the month of July to see what’s quenching your thirst during these hot months. 

#5: Sommar IPA - Oppigårds Bryggeri

This is definitely the dark horse of the top 5 list. We first started seeing check-ins to this beer on July 8th. It’s just getting out there into the marketplace and already has a ton of check-ins! Brewed by Oppigårds Bryggeri out of Sweden, this “summer” IPA is considered a West Coast IPA, which has a “piney” finish.

#4: Stone Tangerine Express Hazy IPA - Stone Brewing

This beer reminds of the Stone Enjoy By IPA Series with Tangerine that I had back in 2016 while visiting the Dogfish Inn! Most breweries are diving deep into the “Hazy” space, and this fits just that. From the description, it uses “bountiful whole tangerine purée, which brings pithy, crisp bitterness to the citrus flavor.” Speaking my language.

#3: Elvis Juice - BrewDog

BrewDog is consistently charting on our top check-in lists. They’re really killing it. I haven’t had the chance to try this one but this is brewed with grapefruit to give it a “tart'' mouthfeel which is different from your standard IPA. The low IBU for this beer makes it a perfect non-bitter IPA with a super clean finish. Can’t wait to try this.

#2: IPA - Lagunitas Brewing Company

Lagunitas is always on the top of the list when it comes to IPAs. It’s definitely a super smooth, easy-drinking IPA, and very available all across the world.

#1: Punk IPA - BrewDog

Punk IPA taking the no.1 spot AGAIN! Not only was it the most checked-in beer last week, but it’s the most checked-in IPA during the entire month of July. 

I’ll echo what I wrote on Twitter last week, this is surprising. Punk IPA check-ins have increased by 20% in the last 3 months. I’ve attributed this to the growth of BrewDog in the U.S. and the re-opening of pubs in the London area over the last couple of weeks. If you haven’t tried this beer yet, locate it near you via the Untappd app and get on the Punk IPA train.

Drinking Socially: Release The Yeast

We had a hard time finding beers that really make it easy to talk about Yeast. Our impulse was to look for classic Belgian beers as an entryway to speaking about the characteristics of different yeast strains. However, as the landscape of beer retail changes during COVID, we found ourselves unable to find a Chimay or Piraat.  After some shopping around, we're excited to check off a beer on Jon's Mount Beermore — and bring in a classic from Flying Dog.  Sit back and enjoy a pint as we talk about Yeast.

What We’re Drinking: 

1. Raging Bitch - Flying Dog Brewery

2. Franziskaner Premium Weissbier Naturtrüb - Spaten-Franziskaner-Löwenbräu-Gruppe

Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Naturtrüb is a natural and elegant wheat beer protagonist from Bavaria with a lush white foam. The copper-golden wheat beer with yeast-over opalescence unfolds an aromatic fragrance with harmonious fruit in which bananas and citrus fruits greet.

Weekly Roundup - Top Beers of the Week

Beer. Convince me there’s a better beverage to get us through the week. You can’t. Your check-ins speak for themselves. I see you all out there earning your New Brew Thursday and Liquid Lunch badges.  You deserved that lunchtime beer after this hard week, Tammy. Get after it, sister. I’m right there with you. Alright, Untappders. I’m doing the first weekly roundup of what got you beer-heads through the week and highlighting your incredible check-ins. These are the top 5 most checked-in beers worldwide. 3. IPA - Lagunitas Brewing Company [untappd class=”beercard” bid=”4509”] [untappd class=”checkin” checkinId=”921527087”] Gerard G. you are speaking my LANGUAGE with this check-in! First of all, those are the most perfect looking steak fries I’ve ever seen. But second of all, your pairing with the malty, hoppy goodness of IPA...treat yo’ self, friend!

2. Corona Extra - Grupo Modelo [untappd class=”beercard” bid=”5848”] [untappd class=”checkin” checkinId=”921554916”] YES, Lukomotive. Whoever you are, you are LIVING by my life motto: When life gives you limes, you shove them in a Corona, you sit by the water, and you check it in. I’m so proud.

1. Punk IPA - BrewDog [untappd class=”beercard” bid=”5702”] [untappd class=”checkin” checkinId=”921568036”] Okay folks, this is exactly what I’m talking about. BEER GETS US THROUGH THE WEEK. Claire said it herself and we trust Claire. She’s spending her night drinking Punk IPA and having a quiz night with her friends. She knows what she’s talking about.

Untappd TV Rebrand!

When we first started Untappd TV, our goal was to help bring the physical world of beer to a virtual space, providing entertainment and connecting industry professionals, enthusiasts, and fans together to chat about beer. We wanted to bring together a community disrupted by COVID-19 for a Virtual Happy Hour so we could continue drinking socially, but virtually. 

As our entertainment offerings grew, we decided the platform deserved its own unique brand identity. We worked with our amazing design team to come up with the new look for Untappd TV!

We took a good look at our current offerings and asked, “How can we attract and help people discover our media content better?”

With that in mind, we’ve redesigned our main page to be more palatable, adding guest headshots and bios so you can better connect with the individuals who will join the show. If a show resonates with you, you can mark that you want to attend one of these events to get alerted via the Untappd app when we go live for that show.

Top 10 Checked-In Emojis on Untappd - Let’s Unpack This

At the end of June our Founder, Greg Avola, shared with us the top 10 emojis used in Untappd check-ins over the past three months.

In honor of World Emoji Day, I decided to dive deep into this tweet. I read this list over and over. You guys have really trampled my tulips with some of these results. I’ve lost sleep trying to make sense of some of these (I’m looking at you number 8, responsible for gray hairs 45 through 53 showing up and caused a stress blackout during which I lost my phone and cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner). 

I’m stepping in here to break down the emoji-use case. It’s the only thing that’s going to help me sleep at night although the week’s worth of turkey sandwiches have been helping out too.

LET’S DIVE IN.

1. 🍻 - Clinking Beer Mugs: This is fine, no surprises here. The clinking beer mugs take the top spot for an app dedicated to drinking socially. I have nothing else to say but well-done. We did it. I feel closer to you all already thanks to these floating mugs, like two ghosts cheersing celebrating their death-day. Jokes on you, ghosts. That beer will go right through you. 

2. 👍 - Thumbs Up: Pretty classic. However, unexciting. This is number 2? The “thumbs up” is the lamest cousin of the super-rad 🤙 and the life-of-the-party 🤘. Imagine all the dads out there sitting on their porches sneaking a mid-day beer while sweat-drenched junior mows the lawn for them in the beaming sun. Check-in caption: "👍 Good work, junior. Greater work, beer."  I hope junior shuts the mower off before he hits the gravel path near the sunroom this time.

3. 🍺 - Beer Mug: Ok, phew. If this didn't make the top three, I'd have to reevaluate what we're all actually doing here. Shut it down, let's all go home. But no, BEER! It's why we're all here (in Untappd's orbit, not planet earth...but we may be on to something). BEER! It’s what’s for lunch and dinner...and under the right circumstances, breakfast.

4. 👌 - OK Hand: "OK"?????  "OK" is even less cool than the thumbs up. Let’s unpack this. This one’s kept me up at night but somewhere between coffee number four and stout number two it became clear. The 👌 sign has also come to mean “nice”... a close relative to “very nice” (you know the voice). I’ve found myself many-a-time mustache-deep in a barleywine and thought: “very nice - great success!”. Yup, now that’s an emoji I can get behind!

5. 😋 - Face Savoring Delicious Food: First face emoji on the list, I see you. Don’t you love when emojis are simple, clear, and to the point. No guesswork needed. I can rest easy. I see 😋 and I know you just enjoyed a DELICIOUS BEVERAGE. Makes sense. Almost too much sense...what’s going to be next on this list?

6. 🔥 - Fire: YES! Now we’re talking guys! I’m guilty of overusing this one in a big way. Text me a picture of your new dog? 🔥 Close a deal at the office? 🔥 Someone film you falling out of a hammock? 🔥🔥 It might be one of my favorite emojis - it’s so versatile. It’s the NEIPA of emojis - likeable to IPA fans and many IPA haters. As long as the breweries of the world keep that haze coming it’ll be easy for me to Krakatoa that check-in with some serious 🔥🔥🔥 

7. 😍 - Heart-Eyes: Bold. We’ve all had it happen before. You open a beer and the nose grabs you right away. You think, “Oh boy, this is gonna be good.” Then it hits your lips and 💥... “It Must Be Love” by Madness starts playing in your head. You’ve found it: a beer that exceeds your expectations and you start drinking it down. Pump the brakes, you need to savor every sip as the bottom of the glass rapidly approaches. It's going to be ok - there are more beers to check-in! For now, enjoy the moment and the beer and add a 🔥 and a 😋 to that check-in too. Go big or go home. 

8. 🕶 - Sunglasses: Like...WHAT? Grab the E-brake and hold on to your bus ticket. This list just ran over a proverbial hot dog cart. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? This planted an itch deep in my brain that nothing could scratch. I had to get out the cork board and some yarn to try and make sense of this one. 

Is this perhaps referring to the brightness of a hazy IPA? Maybe a reference to drinking at the beach where sunglasses are necessary? Could it be referencing a secret beer had incognito in the garage while you’re “reorganizing the garden equipment”? 🕵🏻‍♂️ I once had a toy soda can with sunglasses on it that would dance when you clapped...maybe it’s referring to that? I’m grasping at cardboard straws here. I need ANSWERS. The only thing I know for sure is that this one made my brain hurt. Someone please explain this to me. I’m at my limit. 

9. ❤️ - Red Heart: And we’re back on logical ground. I’ve dropped the ❤️❤️ when drinking Bell’s Two Hearted for obvious reasons.

I use this when checking-in my go to beers - the ones I’ve loved since the early days of my beer quest. We’ve seen check-ins of core brands from well established regional and national breweries skyrocket on Untappd for the past few months. Perhaps other Untappders are sharing the sentiment and expressing their ❤️ for their old reliables: beers that taste great every single time.

10. 😂 - Face with Tears of Joy: A big sigh of relief came with this one because we’re not dealing with 🤖 or 🤡 here.  That’s terrifying. If you use those in your check-ins, are you ok?   😂 is a face I’m all too familiar with. If ‘laughter is the best medicine’, and ‘a beer a day keeps the doctor away’ I’d say the people with a 😂 in their check-in have got more than a few things figured out! But maybe the check-in photo features your tagged friend falling out of a hammock. That’s 😂. Either way, keep the laughs and emojis coming! (And send me that check-in of the hammock - great content).

Rivers, Trails & Ales Virtual Festival (2020)

Rivers, Trails, and Ales Festival takes place in Marietta, OH, which has been named one of the top 100 Adventure Towns in the U.S by National Geographic. Happy Canada Day! This holiday celebrates the anniversary of the effective date of the Constitution Act, which united the three separate colonies of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada. So let's raise a glass to our friends in the Great White North as they celebrate this day!

Untappd + Weathered Souls Brewing Co.

UPDATE: We are excited to announce that we have extended this badge to December 31st, 2020!

We are proud to announce our support of the Black is Beautiful initiative started by Weathered Souls Brewing Co. Black is Beautiful is a collaborative effort among the brewing community and its customers to bring awareness to the injustices that people of color face daily. Through education and information, they hope to bring forth change to a system that has fractured so many families and has been broken for decades. Their mission is to provide a platform to foster understanding and support people of color and inclusion. All proceeds from the purchase of these releases will be donated to local charities that support police reform and provide legal defense to those in need.

Changes to Pride Month (2020)

In an effort to recognize and amplify Pride Month 2020, we devised a new specialized banner that lives at the top of the Untappd app home screen for maximum exposure. We created this banner to further increase visibility around our support for Pride and share in our users’ support for the LGBTQIA+ community. With this banner and through the use of a new feature, we aimed to create a seamless method to show support for Pride and earn the badge. This approach failed to live up to our expectations. We listened to user feedback and found that while the banner ensured our support for Pride was seen by more users than ever before, the opt-in feature itself provided users with a poor experience and did not align with Untappd’s culture of promoting diversity and inclusivity. It was our mistake to institute this feature for the first time with a badge as significant as Pride Month. Effective immediately, the Pride Month (2020) badge will revert back to the 2019 format for badges and will be awarded to all users upon their next check-in. We will extend the Pride Badge until July 12th in order to make up for the time lost as we worked through these issues. We have some work to do around our platform and we are reviewing how best to leverage our platform to promote future campaigns in a way that both improves upon the current experience and allows us to celebrate the causes that we hold near and dear as a company. We appreciate user feedback and are committed to doing right by our global user community.

Note: The badge and its accessories have been extended and can be earned/used through July 12, 2020

Coastal Dreamer

The Brewers' Best Series from New Holland Brewing celebrates the fun-loving spirit of their brewers and the endless creativity they bring to New Holland's recipes. They have explored and experimented with distinct flavors and premium ingredients so that each sip tells that story of creativity and craft that's meant to be shared.

The second beer in the Brewer's Best Series is Coastal Dreams. This double dry hopped DIPA packs a juicy punch and is bursting with a blend of citra and mosaic hops. Inspired by summer on Michigan's Coast, this pairs well with good friends and lazy afternoons. Pride Month (2020)

Pride Month is here again and we are excited to recognize, celebrate, and give voice to the LGBTQIA+ members of our community!

Pride is a time to reflect on the adversity that the LGBTQIA+ community has and continues to endure and overcome. It is a celebration of love and acceptance. It is a powerful reminder that although we all face difficulties, some have suffered more than others, and we must come together to fight injustice and support our friends, family, coworkers, and drinking buddies.

At Untappd, we value diversity and uphold it as one of our core values: “We respect the individuals we work with and embrace differing perspectives. We collaborate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures to make better decisions.” We recognize that diversity makes us stronger, and all voices need to be heard.

With a curated box of beer delivered straight to your door, Untappd Founder, Greg Avola, and a panel of brewmasters will guide two live tasting sessions on June 13th and 14th to tune into from the comfort of your home.

In these sessions, there will be interviews and Q&A with brewmasters of each of the beers in the package, as well special guests along the way!

American Craft Beer Week (2020)

American Craft Beer Week® (May 11-17, 2020) is the annual celebration of U.S. small and independent craft brewers. The weeklong salute provides an opportunity for craft breweries to share their creativity and passion for the beverage they love. 

We’ve teamed up with the Brewers Association to bring you this years badge. To unlock the “American Craft Beer Week 2020“ badge, check-in any beer from an American independent craft brewery between May 11, 2020 - May 17, 2020. 

This year’s American Craft Beer Week theme is #GiveCraftBeer. Celebrate by having beer delivered to your friends and family and raising a virtual pint together. For more information about American Craft Beer Week and how to give craft beer.

All Together (2020)

There is an inextricable link that binds together everyone in the hospitality industry. Brewers, servers, bartenders, bussers, dishwashers, GMs, buyers, chefs, and owners. In this industry, when one struggles, the rest will pick them up.

All Together is a worldwide, open-ended beer collaboration created to raise support for the hospitality industry. It's an effort to raise awareness and provide relief, even in the smallest way, to those who are struggling. Other Half Brewing Co. is inviting any brewer, from any corner of the planet to participate. The recipe is open source, the artwork is public, and the name can be used by all. The goal is to provide breweries with the tools to make this beer at the lowest possible cost. Other Half Brewing Co. will be donating a portion of their proceeds from this beer to the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation, and ask that other breweries donate to support hospitality professionals in their local community.

At the end of the day, this is about what it's always been about—community. While we may not be able to come together in person right now, that spirit can never be broken. If we do our part to protect and support each other, that spirit can actually be strengthened.
