Illustrations for @businessweek . The article discusses how U.S. hospitals and insurance companies, in pursuit of profit, leverage intermediary companies to manipulate the system. These intermediaries help hospitals inflate medical costs while also assisting insurance companies in denying coverage, profiting from both sides. This makes the healthcare process highly complex, leading to a "billing arms race" that adds to the burden on patients and doctors, with insurance denial rates continuously rising.
