Making & using a lace brush in CSP

saw this tweet on twitter,

which actually goes over using file objects to make repeating textures, which is the same method I used to make my lace brush shapes! I elaborated on the process on twitter, and I’m just crossposting this here.

So the first thing is to make a new file object as explained in the tweet, and then if you make use of CSP’s symmetry rulers you can make some complex repeating patterns like this!

The flowers were all done using a 6 line symmetry ruler, and the part at the bottom used a 2 line ruler.

image

& when you set the file object to tiling, you can set what directions it tiles in, too!

Once you’re all done drawing your pattern, you want to make it a brush tip. You need to set this up correctly! CSP’s brush tip engine works as black = primary colour, white = secondary colour,

so to ensure that the brush changes colour as expected: make sure you’re working on a transparent background, and convert your layer to greyscale before you save it as a brush tip material!

This step is important, if you don’t set the layer to greyscale, it will not change colour, even if it’s in black & white.

Anyway with that done you can make it into a brush tip shape by going to edit > register material > image… Here are the settings you’d want for a lace brush! Make sure to tag it so you can find it later.

Once that’s saved you can make it into a brush,

  1. go to brush tip and change the material to your new lace tip
  2. go to stroke, and enable ribbon
  3. if it’s repeating in the wrong direction, go back to brush tip and change the angle to either 90 or 270 (depends which way up you want it)

And you’re done! But as for actually using it, actually prefer to have my lace brushes using the figure line tool, and to make a vector layer for them!

That way you can adjust the line as you need to create more realistic deformation. This works fine with the brush tool too, but drawing a line with the brush tool will create a lot of anchor points so it’s a little trickier to work with.

Anyway! Here’s an example of me using this method

I’ve been wanting to do anatomy studies for a while now, but I don’t really know how or where to start. Do you have any advice or suggestions?

Avatar

You could always find a generator of random poses online, stock photo or whatever and justm draw what they give you. Here are some links to different examples: X , X , X , X , X – and these were just the first five suggestions on google! There’s a lot of similar websites out there!

Another suggestion, one that I highly recommend, buy an anatomical book. My friend gifted this one to me and it’s great:

It’s got a whole bunch of content in it, just a glimpse at the table of contents:

They go step by step through each part of the body, give you the scientific break down and technical terms while also giving great advice on what to remember while drawing said thingThey;ve got a whole bunch great little images that really help you understand the movement of the body and the different ways it can be portrayed

There’s 200+ pages of this type of stuff, I didn’t even put in a whole bunch of the text they’ve got written up besides all of these inforgraphics. You don’t have to get specifically this book, but this and books like these are definitely a good step in the right direction when you don’t have an actual person to study or just want to practice one thing a lot.

oh hey new guide thinggg~ some basics on how to practice! there’s SO much I could add to this, so it’s just the basics :O

short (kind of): there’s more to practice than doing something repeatedly, it’s also learning new things, problem solving, and honest critique. Each of those is its own skill…also be nice to yourself!

Y'all ever think about how there are just a whole bunch of sets of stairs in the middle of forests that lead nowhere

Wh

What?

Well, they don’t go anywhere we immediately recognise as a “place” in the conventional way that sapcetime works.

Anyone else remember that fucking creepypasta, or…?

“i am a monument to all your sins” is such a fucking raw line for a villain it’s amazing that it came from halo, a modernish video game, and not some classical text or mythos

classic texts have nothing on the crazy people come up with in modern times tbh

Ask:

```Which OC's of yours would you like to see in someone's art? Comical? Lewd? Naughty? ```
Well, admittedly my first go to character for most things is Syn as he fits most buckets rather easily.  He is great for the silly, goofy, and lewd. Also does great at action and dynamic poses. All around he just works for stuff. However, I do enjoy seeing them all  in things! Moria is fun and probably needs to end up in more art personally.  She is probably the closet to being my second favorite.  My new Lunar Maw of the Beneath is going to be fun but unsure if I’m completely happy with his design yet to want others to draw him outside his monster form. So yea, short answer is Syn! He fits most dynamics well. Kind of his super power.
