Well you know because under 18th century british anti-catholic legislation it was illegal for catholics to join the army, at least, but the british army and navy were still largely made up of (irish) catholic sailors & soldiers to the point where they mostly passed the relief act which triggered the gordon riots so that those soldiers would be less tempted to revolt — so it’s not impossible that he would be in that position but it adds an interesting other dimension to the way the other men in that 1 pub scene were treating him (i.e. disrespectfully) and also, since this is taking place ~15 years after the glorious revolution it would add an incentive for past!flint to be so devoted to his duty, as catholics had to prove their loyalty to the new protestant british state in order to be allowed to keep what little freedom they had. additionally this adds another layer to his ‘I don’t want a pardon as the government should apologise to me’ because what man who had lived under religious repression and been intentionally totally barred from public life due to his being even considered catholic for his entire life WOULDN’T feel that way about the government responsible for it? the implications

The issue I have with fics that talk about angels as if they're birds in any way (ex. talking about fledglings, wing anatomy, etc.) is that they take the inhumanness of angels, and make it earthly and comprehensible, when angels should be alien and eldrich. Angels are made of light and math, not actual physically functional feathers.
