I'm gonna be working on a new pinned post soon, but for now all you need to know about this blog is that it's a random hodgepodge of whatever the fuck I feel like reblogging. Oh and I write fanfics sometimes.

In the end, if children bother you for sensory reasons and that's why you don't want them to be in the same public spaces as you, there are disabled adults who can and would cause the same sensory issues for you. Adults who are loud, who vocally stim, who have poor boundaries, poor hygiene, who cry in public, etc etc etc. And they're already socially ostracized for all of this.

So actually yeah, it's the bare minimum you can do for the group with the least human rights on the planet to figure out how to accept children as part of your public community without hating them for it, even if you are child-free yourself.

Reminder that I still block empty blogs, as we still have a bot problem.

Apparently this is still a thing. Yeah, the bots evolved, but there still are bots with empty blogs.

Reblog something (on your MAIN blog that's what we see when you follow us!!!), please! (Reblogging this post will suffice too)

Do you know any internet resources with writing advice that doesn't suck? A lot of it is either so basic I already know it despite not being well-versed in writing, or it's "if you X, do it like [media property here] did it, don't do it badly like [media property here]", which is not especially helpful. Things like structuring, learning how to do planning and payoff, how to worldbuild well, etc. are more of what I'm looking for.

Also is it normal for the first four years of your writing to suck? Because looking at my work so far, while I'm improving, a lot of my old stuff is not great at best and 'I'm so glad my real name isn't on this' at worst.

--

Lots of big pro authors spent 20 years writing stuff nobody would buy before finally getting published. There's nothing weird about having four or any number of years of work you now think is weak. You'll probably always think your work from a few years ago is inferior to what you're producing now.

A lot of writing advice is super basic. I don't have any favorite go-tos online. A lot of the books I've liked haven't really been structured as how-tos either. The ones I find more inspiring tend to be ruminations on the creative process that don't try to lay out too many rules.

I did enjoy Sanderson's class that he put on youtube. That's the only thing that springs to mind at the moment.

The fact that Microsoft Word has to be a subscription is upsetting. I already paid for it why do I have to pay again

Yes please be mad about it, genuinely- You used to be able to purchase a single disk to install it and use it forever after that initial purchase of one key. It sickens me to see all this stuff which used to be a one time purchase be shunted under a subscription now.

"Why is pirating going back up?!"

This. This is why. People don't mind paying a high price for software if it's only the once, or every 4-5 years.

But having to pay a high price regularly? Especially in the cases where you lose access to your own work if you don't?

That's why people are pirating software.

Itโ€™s possible to buy a non-subscription version of Word; Microsoft just intentionally makes it very difficult to find (and also expensive).

However, I know a guy who knows a guyย website: MS Office Pro for $50. If the link starts going to a Page Not Found, just search the site; they usually have some form of this sale available.ย

Worth noting: while $50 is still more money than $yo-ho-ho, that money is a great way to make VERY clear to Microsoft that we DO want one-time-purchase products, not subscriptions.

My laptop just died. If it can't be fixed and I need to replace it, this post is gonna be a real life saver, because my family has been sharing an old version of Word that came with a limited number of lifetime licenses, and we're fresh out.

Get LibreOffice. It's fully compatible with MS Office, but it's free and open source. You're welcome. :-)

you ever just sit and realise u canโ€™t remember 80% of your childhood? like โ€ฆ what happened? who am i ..?

Many people in the comments are saying โ€œtraumaโ€, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. Itโ€™s called Childhood Amnesia, and itโ€™s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to โ€œtrickโ€ your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It canโ€™t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is โ€œstored in the bodyโ€, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories wonโ€™t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

reblogging this because Iโ€™ve legit seen people freaking out when they realised they canโ€™t remember some of their childhood, thinking they might have some repressed trauma.

public libraries are so sick. there are five books I want to read and they're all relatively new so they're only available in hardback which is so expensive but it just cost me $0 to place holds on them. five books for zero dollars. it requires nothing but clicking a button and then going to the library to pick them up when they're ready. zero dollars. that's crazy

the humble "like" is oft mocked despite what it does for us. "like, three people" is a vastly different statement from "three people". "and i was like 'what the fuck'" is vastly different from "and i said 'what the fuck'". i love you "like" and anyone who says you make people sound stupid will be killed on sight
