This is 1999 Bri, but it feels like I’m being slapped in the face by “White Queen” all over again, I’m speechless!!!!!

I could listen to this one on repeat, it has such amazing lyrics:

(Also while we're on the subject of Brian and film scores/songs he's done for movies, one of my favourites is "What Are We Made Of" from the 1996 Pinocchio film! A duet with a Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø. I think he sounds divine there:)

So I know this is a bit of a transition chapter - a little teaser before we get down to the real meat of Brian and Lily's situation...but there are two things especially that stand out to me here.

One is definitely that whole first section being dedicated to Lily and Sadie's emotional parting - and I must say I'm going to miss that girl. She balances out Lily so well and I hope we see her eventually once the tour is over. Sadie is so caring and excited and concerned - in the little time that Sadie is there she's been so supportive, always looking out for Lily and making sure she provides to her what Lily herself will forget to bring along (like in this case, the condoms). I love that the ending of Roger x Sadie is very different from what Brian and Lily's might be, because like I said in Chapter 1, I think they were both doing what was expected of them and got what they expected to get out of it. They liked each other, they had fun, they can now move on without any mess and only have good memories of their short time together. Brian and Lily's connection on the other hand is so instant, and intense, I imagine it has to be a little scary for both of them.

BUT! I'm happy Amber is there and I really want to see more of that bond in the story. There's a mentor-innocent apprentice feel about that dynamic and I'm happy that Amber has Lily's back, and that in this unfamiliar touring environment she has someone who is familiar with her and knows her well. I feel Lily might need that kind of support during her first time touring.

Which brings me to my other point. Five chapters in and I'm so used to being in Lily's head, that until this chapter it probably didn't occur to me how new and frightening this must be for Brian. I mean, certain things are new for Lily: how she feels about Brian, how different Brian is from what she's been expecting, how it feels to not be used which still being a groupie. But that little section where he opens up to Lily about his nervousness and confusion...holy smokes. Like not only is he in love with this girl and not only might he need to navigate what this rockstar-groupie relationship is going to be like, he's also discovering himself sexually in the process and that's got to be a lot to take. I'm so glad you're digging into that because now that I think about it, this process is not going to be easy. I'm pretty sure that soon enough this fic is going to break my heart and I'm going to love every moment of it. Bring it on @herewegoagainniall! I'm ready! 😅😭

Honestly I was so in love with this essay back when you put this out @tiredof-allthisvisual and I'm so happy to see it again, because it was such a beautiful meta to read on a Queen video 💜

Would it be okay to add maybe some of his solo stuff here or stuff he's written outside of Queen? There are a few hopeful/happy/uplifting songs of his in his solo work and in some of the stuff he has produced, and some of these tracks I would highly highly recommend listening to!

"Polar Bear" (not extremely happy but the last lines do indicate some sense of hope for me)

"Doin' All Right" (which he co-wrote with Tim Staffel. I love both this version and the Queen one on their debut album!)

Brian's solo stuff:

- "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head" (BTTL - this one is a cute country number overall)

- "Driven By You" (BTTL)

- "Back to the Light" (BTTL - starts out sad, but the ending is quite hopeful) (I'm almost tempted to add "Ressurection", except I see that track as more cathartic than happy, per se. But it still is an amazing listen, because it's getting out of a miserable, self-destructive state and emerging victorious).

- "Last Horizon" (an instrumental but it sounds quite joyful!)

- "Space" (Another World - it's really a tiny intro to the album, but it's lovely)

- "On My Way Up" (Another World)

- "The Guv'nor" (Another World - this was in part written for a soundtrack, and in part homage to Jeff Beck, who also played on this track!)

- "What Are We Made Of" (from the Adventures of Pinocchio OST - this song is so beautiful and he sings it along with a Norwegian soprano named Sissel)

- and of course, "New Horizons"!! Which he co-wrote with Don Black and which, I would argue, is his happiest song.

There's also stuff he's written, which have been sung by other artists that would fit in this category, but I don't know if people would prefer stuff that has his or Freddie's vocals more. But among those, I'd highly recommend these:

- the two tracks he wrote and produced for Japanese popstar Minako Honda ("Golden Days/Crazy Nights"). Golden Days also has a version sung by Kerry Ellis.

- "Some Things That Glitter/I Loved A Butterfly" (there is a Paul Rodgers version in the The Cosmos Rocks album, and a Kerry Ellis version in Anthems)

- These Kerry Ellis songs - "Dangerland" from Anthems, "It's Gonna Be Alright (the Panic Attack Song)" (again, starts out talking about a difficult subject, but there's plenty of hope in the song), and "Roll With You" (co written with Kerry) from Golden Days.

I need air. I need air. How do you expect me to breathe after a chapter like that!

But also I KNEW IT I KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO BE PEACHES! It makes me even more excited for the next few chapters because I can already imagine at least a little bit of how that story will unravel.

I loved how this chapter was a perfect combination of smut and sweetness, because at the core of it all both Brian and Lily are romantics, people who love to have deep connections with the people they are with, people who want what they have to mean more but know - sadly - that it may be too much to expect from where they are standing.

Which is probably why I especially love them in this chapter. Under all the lust and seduction there is so much concern and caring. They start out expecting so little - Brian doesn't think Lily will stay once he tells her he's a virgin, Lily doesn't expect Brian to care about whether she enjoys it or not - but become comfortable with each other (enough to be honest about what they like and whether they enjoyed the experience), and then do their best to ensure the other person has the best experience they could ask for (and the little moments? Lily noticing what nickname Brian likes and Brian asking her if everything is okay when he's too turned on to even think? Wow).

I noticed the sub!Brian energy in tiny doses in the previous chapters but OMG is it in full force here. It's lovely seeing him discover with Lily what he likes, he's like a little butterfly coming out of his cocoon. I'm so proud *sniff* And Lily is so attentive and so sweet, even though she still does try to maintain a necessary measure of distance there.

It's been amazing so far. I seriously can't wait to see how the tour experience goes for the both of them!!

For now I'm listening to "Now I'm Here", and the lines that stand out to me right now, are definitely "a baby I was when you took my hand, and the light of the night burned bright..." 😁

So while I absolutely love the Brian x Lily slow burn going on here...I think my favourite bits in this chapter are the exchanges between the girls. I love Amber being the "protective older sister" figure to both Lily-and-Sadie and the boys, and advising Lily while maintaining that she trusts her. That bit with Sadie too: Roger and Sadie were cute and funny and made me laugh, but I was all soft for the two girls telling each other to take care of themselves. And the way they do it almost seems like a little ritual they do before they go with their respective rockstars. I simply love all these reminders of support and solidarity among the women, that have very little to do with the romance but tell us so much about Lily and where she comes from.

Also also, the fact that Lily absolutely digs it when Brian sings that chorus line from Liar? I see what you did there 👀

Not that the Brian x Lily parts aren't amazing too! I loved the hints of musical connections in the chapter - both present (Mott the Hoople) and future (Bowie), and them trying to find out more about each other beyond the music and the shows (also one of Lily's majors is Literature WOOT WOOT). Brian is so adorable here...he tries so hard to hide what he feels - babbling about how captivating Bowie is and assuming Lily is calling Freddie captivating when she really means him - and fails so miserably, and I don't blame Lily at all for just throwing subtlety out of the window and aggressively going all fangirl on him 😁 (same, sis, saaaaame).

I also love how you make magnetism a metaphor. It's often overused, but there's a freshness to the way you explain it here by talking about similar poles repelling and how one of them has to take the initiative to 'turn'. And thank God Brian does that quickly enough to put Lily out of her misery! XD

Brian and Lily have barely met and already I'm rooting for them, Jesus.

I like how in the previous chapter, Lily visualized the band as a unit, but here she gets to see them all in their individual glory, as people in their own right. In the former they're almost like fantastical beings come down to earth, but here they're people she and her friends can talk to and interact with and choose (even though Brian in her mind is still clearly someone who looks like an angel 😁 Then again...it's 70s Brian!). Her descriptions of Freddie and Roger and John match them so well, and I love how immediate the chemistry between Sadie and Roger is.

The contrast between Roger x Sadie and Brian x Lily is so perfect - I feel like the former might be the expected course where both people know what's expected of them and they're going to take the plunge and enjoy their time together accordingly. But with Brian and Lily it feels like they're about to be completely knocked sideways by whatever may come next, if they aren't already.

Can I just comment on the sweet sweet irony that Lily's favourite Queen song happens to be the first Queen song Brian did lead vocals on? Oh God. And "Someday One Day" is exactly the kind of misty, magical love song that goes so well with this kind of dreamlike vibe that their meeting seems to be having.

I think my favourite moment in this chapter is when Brian and Lily are talking at cross purposes - him asking her opinion on Mott the Hoople and her already recognizing Queen to be more special than most people think they are at this point. Like I find Brian's surprise that they already have such a huge fan so far away, pretty adorable. I also love that inner monologue Lily has about how she should respond to his questions about their music, and the first thing she settles on is being honest with him. I love that.

I'm glad Lily remembers she's the supernova in the exchange, and I'm quite inclined to think Brian agrees she is 😄

Aaaand the show is starting!! I can't wait for Lily to see them live.

OMG I can finally get to review this!!

I'm pretty new to the fandom and this fic was one of the first ones I got to read...and boy is it still my favourite Queen fic out here.

First of all, the title! It's so romantic and it references one of my favourites on SHA album. I kind of sense a feeling of foreboding with it, because the lines just before that mention "the day I leave her...", but at the same time there is hope that what Brian and the Reader have is special and enduring.

I love how this first chapter focuses mostly on Lily because by the time I get to Chapter 2, I'm pretty darn invested in her beyond just her being Brian's love interest. I love how at this stage in her life she's a pretty experienced groupie, she knows what people think of her and Sadie but she also never forgets why she still does this, even though she has no illusions about her heroes, and she knows what she needs to expect.

Sadie is an amazing contrast to that, and I love their friendship as well - the way they support each other and the way Sadie has her back, reminding Lily that she needs to remember she's the supernova even when she's in the presence of a star (also, nice space analogy there!)

Can't wait to review the rest of this series!!
