Our native house sparrows went into a population decline that lasted for decades, and nobody even realised because "they're sparrows, there's loads of them".

Until, in the mid-70s, it seemed like maybe there weren't. And when we started tracking the population we realised they were in serious trouble. They're now on the red list (not the same thing as 'endangered' but 'we're worried about the drop in numbers')

They've seen some improvement in the last couple of years, but we only know that because someone noticed! Please notice the sparrows!

There are also loads of sparrow species that are super rare and endangered. They look regular but they're actually very special.
