Presenting the new (slightly altered) banner!

To celebrate this change and the beginning of a new school year, I thought about doing a reintroduction to the blog, as I haven't done so since it was created a couple years ago.

  • My name is Cláudia.
  • I'm studying nursing, on my fifth year of university.
  • I'm done with most of the subjects, all that's left are many, many clinical rotations.
  • Besides nursing, I'm passionate about cats (all animals, really), books, writing, art, languages and history.
  • This is a side blog.
  • I'll follow you from the blog artemissidereus.
  • I use the tag #artemisstudies to track original posts.
  • The blog is light/dark academia themed, but it does not condone the values of said aesthetics. Academia is open to all who seek to learn.
  • My hopes for this blog were and still are to stay motivated and create a disciplined routine to stay focused on my studies.

Long time without posting!

I haven't been great, university hasn't been great - but one must persevere.

My plans general plans for this year are to take it easy and get back to doing the things I loved before burn out overtook me right on the first year of higher education.

Here's a collection of moments (featuring my vanity, the best possible purchase I could've made in 2023).

Studying can be a daunting task, especially when we're not feeling motivated or don't know where to start. Luckily you are on Tumblr, where the Tumblr Studyblr community lives!

A group of individuals who share their study tips, techniques, and challenges to help motivate and inspire others.

As a member of this community, I've compiled a master post of study challenges created by Studyblr bloggers. These challenges aim to help students stay on track, improve their focus, and achieve their academic goals. So you can join in and start achieving your academic potential!

>> 𝐍 𝐨 𝐭 𝐞

If you know any other challenges or you've created ones yourself and want to share them, do message me with the link to the post so I can update the list! I too will be creating some, more coding-related ones as I am a coding studyblr (codeblr) blog! That's all and hope you find a challenge you'd like to start!

I had a week long vacation not long ago, so I finally have enough energy to talk to non-medical friends once again. And I just realized once again, I'm not sure how to talk to them.

They tell me all the things they participated in, and I'm truly happy for them, all the while thinking I would never have half that much energy. They ask me how I am, I tell them I'm good, finally had a vacation. What did I do? Oh, literally nothing, tried to sleep off the worst of the exhaustion and tried to avoid interaction with other humans. How's work? You know, just the usual, it's good. It is good, and I love it, but how could I tell them all the horrors witnessed? That's right I don't, but what else do I have left to talk about? Most of my fun work stories are tainted with the shadows of tragedies... And unfortunately, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

So I just read their cheerful message and leave it on read, contemplating what to answer. And just hope they won't take offence to my agonizingly slow replies...

You try and say something normal about your day, and it gets bogged down by the fact that you were participating in a tragedy at the time. It’s too disturbing, too messy, too much to explain. And goodness, you never can complain. Because that is just rude, or ungrateful, or…something. So you just say everything is fine, work is good, how are you?

And people don’t get some of the things that are the biggest wins, because they don’t understand how bad it is. They don’t understand how something could have made you laugh when your shoes are covered in blood, and the fact that you are grumpy not because of the Bad Thing but because you didn’t get to finish your coffee, and the secretary was grumpy at you for no apparent reason.

People act surprised when you talk about the exhaustion as the hard part, the fact that all you want is to sleep, the lack of control over your life, but they don’t quite get how much any of those things mean.

I talked for years about how much I hate the sound of my pager, and my husband never quite got it. I left it at home by accident one day, and he suddenly got it in 5 minutes. But he didn’t understand what it would feel like to wear it for 14 hours. And that is someone that sees as much of the everyday awfulness as an outsider can.

I don’t know how to talk to someone outside of medicine any more either.

My day was fine. How was yours?

Yes yes yes. God, so much yes.

i am no longer sacrificing my health and wellness for academics in 2024. i'm learning time management skills and investing in hobbies an healthy coping mechanisms to deal with my stress. no more all-nighters, no more cramming, no more running myself into the ground. more room for life, more learning for fun, more taking care of myself.

Happy new year, everyone!

Random writing tips that my history professor just told during class that are actually helpful

  • Download all your sources or print them so you can turn off your wifi
  • Give your phone to someone
  • Just. WRITE. Writing is analysing, you’ll get more ideas as you write. It doesn’t need to be perfect, for now you can just blurt out words and ideas randomly. You can fix it later.
  • Create a skeleton/structure before writing.
  • Stop before you get exhausted. It’s best to stop writing when you still have some energy and inspiration left, this will also motivate you to get started again next time.
  • Make a to do list
  • Work in bite sizes. Even if it’s not much, as long as you put some ideas on paper or do some editing.
  • Simple language =/= boring language, simple language = clear language.
  • Own your words. If they are not your words, state this clearly in the text, not just in the footnotes.
  • STOP BEFORE YOU GET EXHAUSTED. Listing it again because it’s easily one of the best tips a teacher has ever given me.

Identify your personal learning style, peak productivity hours, and preferred study environments.

Step 1: Learning Style Assessment

1.1 Research Learning Styles:

  • Explore different learning styles, such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or read/write. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of each. (find my post here)

1.2 Reflect on Past Experiences:

  • Recall situations where you felt most engaged and learned effectively. Note the activities and methods that worked best for you.

1.3 Take Learning Style Assessments:

  • Utilize online learning style assessments to gain insights into your preferred learning style. Examples include VARK (Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, Kinesthetic) or Honey and Mumford's Learning Styles Questionnaire.

Step 2: Peak Productivity Hours Identification

2.1 Self-Reflection:

  • Reflect on your daily energy levels and focus. Identify times when you feel most alert, focused, and energetic.

2.2 Experiment with Different Times:

  • Schedule study or work sessions during various times of the day. Observe your productivity levels during these sessions.

2.3 Track Productivity Patterns:

Maintain a journal to log your productivity levels throughout the day. Look for patterns or consistent periods of heightened focus.

Step 3: Preferred Study Environments

3.1 Experiment with Settings:

  • Study in different environments, such as libraries, cafes, quiet rooms, or outdoor spaces. Note how each setting affects your concentration and comfort.

3.2 Consider Noise Levels:

  • Assess your tolerance for noise. Determine if you work better in complete silence, with background music, or in moderately noisy environments.

3.3 Evaluate Lighting:

  • Pay attention to the impact of lighting on your focus. Experiment with natural light, artificial light, and different color temperatures.

3.4 Note Distractions:

  • Identify potential distractions in each environment. Consider whether you thrive in a completely distraction-free zone or if a mild level of distraction enhances your productivity.

Thanks for reading! Hope it helps! x
