Loving him was never easy, sometimes it felt like he was actively working against you and doing everything in his power to keep you on the sidelines of his soul. In some damaged way he was testing you, waiting for the day when you would break and leave him behind, but you always stayed. There had been times when you had doubted the love you felt for him, unsure if it was strong enough to keep you both afloat in a universe that wanted to drown you. But then there were also those times when he would give you that rare little smile, the one specifically designed for your eyes only. When he smiled at you, the doubts and insecurities that had webbed lies in your mind would be crushed to pieces. You had left the order for him, sacrificing the life you had always known for a love you had barely experienced. That did not matter to you, for in the depths of your soul you knew that it would always be him, the sniper with the cold eyes that only warmed when watching you. After leaving your old life behind, you had joined him and his brothers on their missions and adventures, still fighting a war where so much had been lost. For all of you, the war was your only reality and all you had ever experienced. Perhaps that was why, with arms wrapped around each otherās bodies and eyes closed to the reality, you and he would trade dreams of a future where the screams, deaths, and sacrifices were only a memory. It had seemed possible then, to hope for a future with him, to wish for a long life filled with the love you had taught each other.Ā
It no longer seemed possible as the rifle he had taught you to shoot with, was pointing at your heart. His face held such hatred that you had forgotten to breathe, for how could this be the same man who, just days ago had rested his head on your chest because the sound of your heart calmed him when nothing else could. You wanted to say something, maybe even to scream, but your mouth was dry and your lips were sealed. Just moments ago you had been fighting alongside him, betting on who would take out the most droids and speculating what the winner would get. It could have been anything, you would not have cared, the sole thing you had ever wanted was time, time with him and his brothers. The thought of them made your stomach drop, you would not even get to say goodbye to the family you had found, for they were too far away to ever get to you and Crosshair in time. Oh, gods, you were going to die by the hands of your person, whose very soul was intertwined with yours. Your lightsaber was still hanging in your hand, which was slack by shock. But there would never be a time in this world or the next where you would wield your weapon against him, so you let it fall to the snowy ground. His eyes followed it as it fell and you watched him intently, searching for something anything that would help you understand why this was happening. Had the two of you been around the others, perhaps you would have understood that this was not his choice but rather the doing of another. But as the two of you stood alone, there was only doubt if he had ever even loved you at all. His fingers closed around the trigger and you closed your eyes, refusing to look into his cold stare, instead, you focused on the memory of his smile and the man you had believed him to be. With your eyes closed, you could not see the way his hands shook as he held his rifle, as if a part of him was fighting for dear life. Not even his stubbornness or strong resolve was enough to fight against the unknown enemy in his mind, so his fingers pressed down the trigger.Ā
āGood soldiers follow orders.ā
Time slowed as his blaster shot hit her right at her heart. At that moment he felt nothing, not even when his brothers ran towards them screaming with their blasters raised at him. He lowered his rifle and watched as his team crowded around her, the person who was supposed to be important to him but he could not remember why. He could not understand why she had watched him with eyes that blazed with enough love to create an inferno. He could not understand why a small insignificant part of him was furious that he had not missed his shot. Crosshair could not understand why it felt like his soul was splitting in two as he watched the life leave her body.
