decolonizepalestine.com is an easy to navigate website run by two palestinians which breaks down common myths about palestine and provides a reading list organized by a wide variety of categories ranging from history and culture to media and censorship. it’s a good starting point to use if you want to learn more about the modern day situation in palestine and understand the truth behind myths that have been perpetuated about israel’s occupation of palestine.

“We cant raise minimum wage bc rent will increase”

Stop using the passive voice. Say what will actually happen. Landlords will increase rent — a voluntary action, not a natural result. The fun thing about voluntary actions is that they can be legislated against. What IS a natural result is that when landlords raise rent, their tenants’ wages automatically devalue. Again, the solution here is to stop the voluntary choice from being a choice at all.

Landlords choosing to increase rent is the problem, not a natural result of the solution.

Reasonable rent control would solve a lot of problems.

In the same vein, when people say “We can’t raise the minimum wage because unemployment would go up” what they’re really saying is business owners would fire vulnerable workers if they had to start paying them a living wage.

The problem is that “landlord” or “business owner” is a thing that people can be, a position of power that exists for people to assume. Capitalist control of the economy is the problem, and taking power out of the hands of the capitalist class and into the hands of the working class should be the goal.

“We can’t raise people out of poverty because the capitalist class will get greedy and lash out.”

They’re literally admitting that capitalism is unsustainable and motivated entirely by greed. But they still can’t comprehend why anyone would consider the possibility of something other than unregulated capitalism.

I feel we need to encourage the consumption of more weird and artsy films and books because I love lore and detail and I read enough mediocre science fiction to be able to buy into the "but of course, as we all know, the Widget Device can handle this problem" form of clumsy exposition, but also there is something to be said for watching something and just being like "I have no idea what the fuck is going on but I trust the process".
