NOAA just issued the Severe (G4) level geomagnetic storm watch for May 11, 2024

Yeah, the Sun sneezed pretty hard yesterday. :) As a result, what we have incoming now may be the strongest geomagnetic storm since 2005 (if it holds to its predicted K-index strength of Kp 8 (on a scale of 0-9).

Peak maybe-we’ll-see-it time for Irish and UK people looks to be around 2100ish. (Video courtesy of ITV [UK] weather guy @ChrisPage90 over at the Once Upon A Bird place.)

The North American forecast looks like this (NOAA video via ex-Birdie-based @GrandForksNDSkyColor):

…And it looks like our local forecast, for a blessed change, suggests we might actually see something. (That band of cloud out in the Atlantic won’t be here until tomorrow evening.)

I think we’d better go out and uncover the lawn furniture. :)

Early visual development for Wish (2023) by Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay and Brittney Lee.

An earlier version of the film saw Star take on a human form as a magical, glowing character inspired by Peter Pan. Ultimately, the creative team reconceptualized Star as an ethereal, playful entity resembling Mickey Mouse. "Now Star and Asha have an emotional journey. They are soulmates." -Allison Moore.

The absolute upper limit of what can be considered affordable for a home is 4x your income. Ideally it should be 3x, but 4x is the limit for reasonably stretching your budget.

Using Sacramento as an example, median home price is about $510k, and median household income is about $85,000

That number for Sacramento is 6x, and that's for a middling city with middling employment prospects. So the entire city for almost everyone living there is by definition unaffordable. And that's not as bad as it gets

Let's look at Toronto. Median income is around $91,000, median home price is just over $1,100,000. That's a ratio of 12:1. You would need to be making a quarter of a million dollars just to be able to qualify for a mortgage.

For a home to be affordable, one of two things need to happen: 1) incomes need to rise astronomically overnight or 2) home prices need to crash astronomically overnight

In Sacramento, that means the median income needs to double (to $170k per year), or home prices need to crash by 50%

In Toronto, that means incomes need to quadruple (to $370k per year) or home prices need to crash about 75%

This is how bad the housing crisis is. I don't think people truly understand the gravity of how bad it is. Home prices should not be this high. Incomes should not be this low. Look back 100 years and you won't find a time when affordability was this bad for everyone everywhere. Things must change

“Did you know the Italians have 200 different words for pasta?”

Now available in Inuktitut syllabics.

I beg your pardon?? Italians have more than 250 words for pasta (or even 400, if we count all the types that aren’t on the market anymore)

That’s the trouble with the Inuit. Always underestimating the true number of Italian words for pasta.

The world vs. Italy when the topic is pasta

>that aren’t on the market anymore

I’m sorry, are you saying Italy as a whole just straight up retires types of pastas like LEGO sets?

Marble is a medium in which you can be horny on main and everyone’s like “wow that’s classy.”

I think having skills to construct flesh out of stone gives you as much right to be horny on main as any creator god.

This is a distance of roughly 625 miles and we are going to assume that the speed does not include the time penalty of Spain having a different Rail Gauge than France.

At 890 miles of rail you can get New York to Chicago which would be the ideal first route, but what can you get with 625 miles that makes more since than Columbus?

Well at that distance you can get Raleigh-DC-Philadelphia-NYC- Boston

With intermediate stops in Richmond, Baltimore, New Haven, and Providence

That is a route that is not only good, but has potential to be one of the most used rail lines in the world if it were at high speeds and a cheap price

How about putting some more rails, especially high speed, out here in the midwest, so those of us stuck out here can travel without hours in a car or spending hundreds on a plane ticket?

I guess another route of equivalent length would be St.Paul-Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago- -Indianapolis-louisville

I remember when Obama put aside the money for a rapid light rail system from Chicago to Minneapolis. And the loathsome then Governor of Wisconsin gave the money back, and blocked the project.
