KUNG FU PANDA (2008)

I know you're not the Dragon Warrior. None of you. I heard how he fell out of the sky on a ball of fire... that he's a warrior unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Progress Log 1

I suppose you're wondering just what it is that you've stumbled across here!

To the curious, bold, and inquisitive minds who care to know (and you should care), allow me to introduce myself: my name is Doctor Asteriscus ‘Aster’ Oberon Starline, esteemed scientist in the fields of arcana and advanced robotics, the world's only leading expert on the mythical Warp Topaz, and soon-to-be Doctor Eggman protégé.

… once he is found, that is.

Anyone with their finger on the pulse of recent global events (or living anywhere other than the underside of a rock) should be all too aware of the Doctor's unusual absence immediately after the war. His machines roam the world aimlessly, nothing but cannon fodder for what pockets of the Resistance are still standing.

I, of course, intend to change this.

These records will serve as a means to document my work as I continue my hunt for the Warp Topaz. Progress slowed considerably during the war, although I've recently discovered a breakthrough and am arranging preparations as we speak. It will be a long journey, but if my calculations are correct (and they usually are), then I should have the Warp Topaz in hand before the end of the week.

Sincerely yours,

⭐️ Doctor Starline

If you don't mind me asking? Can you elaborate more on the problematic aspect of Mumrik please?

Don't take too much of my word for it because this isn't very researched and this is more of a stream of consciousness than anything but fanon "Mumriks" (Joxter and Snufkin), as I've seen here and there, fall dangerously close to antisemitic caricatures and Romani stereotypes.

For one thing, Joxter and Snufkin's personalities being equated leads to a mash of their negative traits, and their negative traits being laziness, deceitfulness, uncleanliness and tendency for thievery/utter disregard for the law to the point of amorality or indecency applied to both with either "natural explanations" (saying that's just an Inherent Part Of Their Species) or dubious motivations is deeply entrenched in stereotypes of the Roma throughout Europe.

The fandom tends to mystify Joxter and Snufkin alot on very shaky ground, with forebodings (gut feelings) that are treated as a magic litmus test for things to come or having a connection with ghosts or using divination like tarot which is based on either throwaway lines or background details that don't particularly affect the plot yet the fandom treats as one of their major traits that get used in plots alot. Romani people get stereotyped with that sort of mysticism alot, especially in association with the Fortune Telling business and to a lesser extent Mediumship and general superstition. I could also chalk this up to the mystic cat stereotype, particularly in association with witches and the like.

Joxter gets (or at least got, a while back) casted as the malevolent counterpart to Snufkin for the sake of Daddy Issues Angst, and that combined with people's dissatisfaction with Joxter and Snufkin's more human designs gave way to very impish or even monsterous depictions of Joxter (and sometimes Snufkin), which we can make parallels to antisemitic caricatures of Jewish people; sharp teeth, pointy ears, strange eyes, predominant nose, hind legs, tails, claws, generally untrustworthy vibes all around. Unclean and tattered, not to be trusted by others in any proximity; good for nothing thieves and tricksters.

People like to make "Mumriks" this massively marginalized group, afterall the two fellas we know are like... Hrm. But Joxter's lifestyle is hopelessly conflated with Snufkin's... Darn. People try to draw lines where they think they are but in doing so, it trying to replicate Tove's style of "some behaviors being inherent to a species" (which one can debunk with some critical thought and literacy) they accidentally create these stereotypes, they don't draw clear distinctions between Joxter and Snufkin even though Snufkin's mother is a Mymble, they don't consider how weird it would be within the context of our culture or even the context of these characters, yet somehow...

But this is just my thoughts as they currently are, I have thought about it alot but I do need to be on the lookout for more examples and do more proper digging. Again, I'm not accusing anyone of bigotry and purposefully baking them into characters who are clearly their darling faves, I'm just saying that there are certain things one must keep in mind when it comes to characterization and headcanons, or else one could accidentally recreate malicious bigotry without any malice.

When this post on the "problematic" aspects of fanon's interpretation of Snufkin and Joxter's species first came up on my dash, it took me a couple of reads to fully understand. Once I did, I thought you had some very valid points in regards to being watchful of how fandom will accentuate or minimize certain traits in characters.

However, at the same time I’m just gonna have to bite the bullet and say I disagree with your thesis on fanon interpretations of Snufkin and Joxter being problematic or otherwise harmful characterizations.

Firstly, we need to remember the Moomin fandom especially is chock full of furries. There are a lot of them. Hell, people who weren’t furries sometimes end up falling into that pipeline because of Moomin (I should know, I was one). The reason me and many other people gave Snufkin and Jox things like claws or paw pads or tails, etc, is because it was a way to stylize a design so that it fit with the “magical fantasy world” setting and other creatures. Basically, we’re told Snufkin and Joxter aren’t humans– nor are Mymbles; the animal traits are just that: to signalize that, and it’s not done in a dehumanizing or “other-ing” way.

Secondly, I find it very odd that the problem here lies in Snufkin and Joxter specifically, yet doesn't extend to other human-coded characters. Example: Too-ticky, Mymble, Toffle, and others. If we're going to equate the non-human traits as a possible equivalent of exaggerating perceived negative traits, then why not draw them as full humans like the Eastern side of the fandom does? I’ve seen people draw Too Ticky completely covered in fur that makes her look like an otter. Going back to my first point, it’s literally the same thing with Snufkin.

One final thing I want to point out is that you’re presenting a potentially dangerous position for other, oftentimes younger fans. They’ll read the post and get the idea that using mumrik headcanons is inherently problematic, which can then easily snowball into something more chaotic. I understand popular fanon hc’s can get tiring, especially if they don’t make sense to you. Believe me, I really do. But when it comes to voicing these opinions to a large audience using certain buzzwords? It just… doesn’t sit right with me.

Yup

Bro you came here and took the words out of my chat box.

This.

I don't think it's that deep. It's just the fandom putting their interests on the characters. It has been done since always. A great chunk of people in the fandom their interests, hell, even their whole life styles revolve around tarot reading, light or dark academia and cottage core aesthetics, practice of magic and stuff. The moomins are creatures, many artists are just trying to highlight the 'whimsical' side and make them look more like mythological creatures (cus.... they're trolls).

Yes. It's been established, and it's obvious that there are stuff on the moomins that are a product of their time. We cannot change that but we can be aware of it and not make the same mistakes. And of course we need to be careful of spreading stereotypes on the content we create.

But I don't see the fandom doing that. We just depict Joxter and Snufkin having cat-like creature traits.
