Your go to for questions about Social Work!

Blog On Archive

Hey all! Aunt Scripty (@scriptmedic) here.

Brittani, the mod who was running ScriptSocialWork, has decided to step away from the family. This blog is being left up as an archive, but won’t be posting new content, responding to asks or comments, or accepting submissions.

We wish her all the best in her endeavors and the door is always open if she decides to come back!

Enjoy the archives of the blog.

xoxo, Aunt Scripty

How likely is it a social worker for the State (setting is California) could/would wind up at the scene of a domestic violence incident (due to the cases they're assigned, I mean) - and if so, is it reasonable for them to be there at the same time as some of the cops? I have a plotbunny where a social worker character meets a cop character, and so far my favorite version of how they meet is winding up at the same DV scene and winding up talking with each other; plausible, or should I revise?

Your character could have had a meeting scheduled with the family and show up at the same time as the cops or you could have your character be the one who calls the cops. It’s happened before when a social worker is in the field. So your idea is very plausible!

Do you know how likely it is for someone whose parents just died to end up in the care of their adult half-brother who didn't know they existed beforehand? Also, what reason would there be for it to end up taking a month or so to place a child whose parent just died?

It is possible if they are the closest relative to the child.

As for why it would take so long, well they could have had a hard time getting in contact with the half-brother.

Hi, my MC was born and raised in a secret facility that raised girls into assassins. They were taught to talk but weren’t allowed to most of the time. When she was 7 they were rescued by the CIA, and I was wondering what would happen to them after that? I guess they’d be taken to a hospital first, but what would be the procedure after that? Some of the older girls had been kidnapped as babies, but the younger ones were born in the facility by the older girls. Who would take care of them [1/2]

[2/2] and how would they be treated and reintegrated/rehabilitated? Thanks in advance!

Hmm. CPS would be involved every step of the way and would help locate the girls families and help get them involved in rehabilitation into society along with lots and lots of counseling.

I’m going to refer you to @scripttraumasurvivors who will be able to tell you more about what they are likely to go through as this isn’t a topic that I’m overly familiar with but it sounds like it’ll be a great story!!

Social Work Word of the Day

Homeless Shelters: Private or publicly funded residential facilities for individuals and families who otherwise have no homes. The shelters typically offer beds, meals, and sometimes health and social services to as many needy people as possible, depending on available room, supplies, and demand. Some shelters have strict requirements about who is accepted, whereas others admit anyone on an as-available basis.

Hi. Quick question. How likely is CPS to get involved if an incoming college freshman's entrance essay, a what was your greatest struggle-kind, is about how they raised themselves for six years after both parents bailed? Would they get involved at all or something else? Thank you so much for the blog! Have a lovely day!

Depending on the character’s age there could be an investigation if the college even reported it.

If it is reported and there is an investigation then it is very likely that the parents will have a warrant issued for their arrest so that they can be questioned but unless there are younger children (minors) involved then CPS isn’t likely to get involved at all at this point.

Do you think there's a need for a 'script-foster-child' then? I'm in foster care, so consider myself well versed in it, although I live in Australia so things may be different than everywhere else.

I have been looking for another mod that has more knowledge in foster care and adoption than I do but I haven’t found one yet. If you’re interested you can message me so that we can talk about it.

Things probably are different in Australia than here in the US but it would still be interesting to know how things are run there.

Social Work Word of the Day

Shelters: Facilities that provide and maintain temporary residences and protection for people of animals in need. Shelters exist in most communities for battered and abused women, homeless men and women, abandoned or abused women, homeless men and women, abandoned or abused children, victims of crimes and natural disasters, and people experiencing a variety of other circumstances.

Announcement!

Hello Scriptaroos! I’m going through my inbox and I’m seeing a certain pattern in questions that I can’ answer.

Things that are not in my scope of practice:

  • Foster Care
  • Adoption
  • Legal Questions

I don’t have enough knowledge to be able to answer them for you and I don’t have enough time to put into researching them at the moment as Real Life is busy. (I graduate college in December so I have almost zero free time, plus putting in hours at my internship).

If you have sent me a question about one of the things I mentioned above I’m sorry but I can’t answer them and they have been deleted.

Things that are in my scope of practice:

  • Child Abuse
  • Homelessness (Master posts are being worked on for this)
  • Case Management
  • The Counseling Side of Social Work
  • Suicide

If you have sent me a question about any of these five and I haven’t already answered them then I will be as soon as I get a chance.

(My current semester has 3-4 weeks left and then I have a three week break before my final semester starts so please understand that I am extremely busy but I am doing the best I can to answer your questions.)

Social Work Word of the Day

Homelessness: The condition of lacking a permanent residence and the means to obtain one. Generally, a homeless person is impoverished and transient and often lacks the social skills or emotional stability needed to improve the situation unless help is provided.

It's plausible for someone who considered or was majoring in social work who had a lot of the credits for it, to have a reasonable degree of familiarity with/have studied certain topics in psychology regarding vulnerable populations, right? I want someone to recognize that what another character went through would be "basically solitary confinement", so it can be acknowledged in-text what it might do to them, and was considering having the recognizer be my "former social work major" character.

We do have to take several psychology classes while in school but your character could have also minored or double majored in psychology along with their social work major so yes it is very possible.

What options do my character have for reporting a minor (15) who came into his shop wearing worn out/ripped clothes, covered in dirt and possibly have a few small cuts (she had been living and sleeping in the Woods for over a month). even if he doesn't know who she is or that she ran away from foster care? and what information would he be given on her whereabouts/condition? (Story takes place in the US, Idaho to be more specific)

Your character can call the police and tell them that the other character came in and that he suspects that she is homeless. If she stole anything then he can call in for that reason. Or he might have seen her on a missing persons poster and called the number on it.

However your character wont be given much details on the other character if she is found due to HIPAA laws.

Hey, I know you're very busy right now but if you have the time do you know how to get past safe mode? I am a minor but scriptsocialwork is blocked off and I'd really want some sources from them. Whenever I try to turn off safe mode they'd put it back up again. If not then thank you anyway for reading this.

Sorry about that Scriptaroo's!! It has been fixed!!
