There are many legends about the pygmy hippo. One of the best known is that, during the night, the pygmy hippo will carry a glowing diamond in their mouth that helps light their way through the forest. During the day, the diamond is safely hidden away. If a hunter manages to catch a pygmy hippo at night, he can steal the diamond.
Other legends are that the pygmy hippo will douse forest fires by spraying them with dung, then eat the resulting charcoal. Another is that the hippo’s blood-like skin secretions make their hides bulletproof, and that newborn baby hippos will lick and drink these secretions in lieu of nursing.
