i really don't understand the idea that dean doesn't understand his feelings for cas, or doesn't ~know or whatever. he went to a place that strips you to your instincts, a place dean called pure, and all he wanted to do there was find "the angel." and then later returned to that same place and knelt in the ground, his back open to attacks, and bared his soul once again.

Headin’ South (WIP)

Rating: Explicit

Tags: Post-Episode: s15e18 Despair, Post-Episode: s15e19 Inherit the Earth, Post-Canon, Post-Canon Fix-It, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Love Confessions, Comfortably Bisexual Dean Winchester, Dean Winchester Knows What Dean Winchester Wants, Castiel and Dean Winchester Use Their Words, Idiots in Love, Supportive Sam Winchester, Little Shit Sam Winchester, (because COME ON), The Empty Doesn't Take Cas Away, Developing Relationship, surprisingly low angst level for now

Summary: What if after all is said and done, the Empty never takes Castiel away, and now all that's left for the Angel of the Lord is to face the music?

What if all that's left after beating Chuck is a whole world of opportunities, and nothing on the horizon to stop them?

What if after all is said and done, Dean and Cas settle in a relationship they both thought was out of their reach, never mind how much they both craved it?

The soft ending they deserved, and even more so; Freedom.

Titled after Zach Bryan's "Headin' South" (x)

🚨 Chapter 1 drops tonight on AO3 🚨

HEARTLAND FLYER  |  TEEN AND UP  |  20,017

Ever since he graduated from college and lost his parents, the world has been rushing by Dean Winchester faster than a high-speed train. He’s tabled his dreams of being a published writer to edit others’ work at a press in D.C., and although he keeps trying to finish his manuscript on the side, he’s stuck in a perpetual loop of writer’s block.

And then there’s the issue of his love life.

For the same amount of time that he’s been standing still, he’s been in love with his roommate, Cas Milton. Cas works for Amtrak and spends his time traveling both D.C. and the country, and more often than not, his outlook on the future is more positive than Dean’s. Despite the fact that they devote most of their time to each other, Dean knows the truth: one day, Cas will find the person he’s truly meant to spend his life with, and he’ll ride that train off into the proverbial sunset, leaving Dean behind.

But what if the truth Dean thinks he knows is wrong, and a brighter future is out there, if he’ll only grab hold of it?

Pairings: Dean/Cas

Warnings: Grief and mental illness
