Trust no one. Always prepare for the worst. Always assume your doubts are correct. And live life as if it's your last day- try not to die.

“I’m glad you’re coming” are the last words Aella hears before they dematerialize – moments later, they’re blinking beneath the twin suns of a strange planet. Instantly, the ensign opens his tricorder and starts scanning the surroundings. “An adventure,” murmurs the commander as she stares at the red and purple leaves that stretch and surround them. “Let us hope it is a good one, then.” Ebony eyes meet her captain’s, her thin body twisting languidly as she watches him. “From which way was the disturbance we detected on our sensors?”

“Due north,” he replies automatically, eyes flickering over to the ensign to make sure he’s doing his job properly. “I-- as far as I know we aren’t dealing with anything living. But... it feels as if.... we are being communicated with. Guess it’s a good thing you’re here.” His tone is joking, but the words are sincere as he smiles at her.

Relief is palpable when the captain consents – not just from Aella, but from the nearby officers as well. Aella nods in good will to the lieutenant who sidles out of her way to allow her on the transporter. Her shoes click as she takes the place, meeting her captain’s eyes for just a moment. Her voice gentles in a, “Thank you,” before her eyes move to the transporter chief, who is standing by to send them down.

There’s a bright smile on his face now as he gives the chief a go-ahead, and then turns back to Aella. “You know I’m always happy to go on an adventure with you, Aella.” There’s an ensign with them too of course, listening, but he hardly cares that he will overhear the informalities. “I’m glad you’re coming.”

The resistance from her captain her friend stings in a way, but such realization does not make her face – she holds even, strong gaze. “The captain should not be beaming down in the first place where danger presents itself. My linguistic and empathic skills would be more useful to the away team.” A hesitation, and then a very pointed, “Sir.”

He holds her gaze a moment longer, taking in her words. He stubbornly wants to refuse, because he’s never liked changing his mind, and he doesn’t want to back down in front of his crew. But he also wants her company, and she does have a point. “Fine,” he grumbles, more fondness in his voice than irritation. “Take her place.” He gestures to a lieutenant who shrugs and steps out of the way, giving Aella room on the transporter. A cocked eyebrow when no one is looking and an equally pointed, “...COMMANDER.”

What does it appear I am doing?” The quiet click of the metallic belt as it fastens around her punctuates her sentence. The commander looks up, armed and outfitted to join the away team, standing in front of the transporter to block her captain’s exit without her. “I am beaming down as well.”

“I didn’t invite you to beam down with us.”  Arms crossed, a frown settling on his face, Piper makes even eye contact with her. “We can’t leave the ship without her Captain OR first officer, you know that.” The transporter chief looks ready to intervene but he doesn’t, standing there with his mouth slightly open but silent. “You know it’s not because I don’t want your company--”

“Stop smiling at me at tell me what you want!” She snapped impatiently. She took note of all the way to get out of the room and the easiest was behind him, right back out the door she came in through. If she had to fight her way out, she would. When he dove into his explanations, her glared intensified. She didn’t like being accused of things and this was feeling more like an interrogation than anything. When he told Mika his name her eyes shot to his face. The name sounded vaguely familiar but she couldn’t place it.

The color drained out of her already pale face, though, when he held out the PADD. “H-how do you…” Her question trailed off and eyes grew wide with intense fear. She bit her lip in order to stop tears from forming. She backed away even more. Only Section 31 agents were aware of the Bishop case. Poor Thomas had snapped from the pressure and stress of his job and tried to literally strangle his superior. The fight that ensued put both men in the hospital for weeks. Thomas was sent to a court martial and after the sentence, no one ever heard or saw him again.

“Cut the shit!” She growled at him. “They sent you to kill me, didn’t they?!” She knew she was beginning to looked like a scared, trapped animal. “I will tell you this Commander Piper, if that’s even your name, I’m not an easy woman to take down! And if you’re going to kill me here of all places, they must be running low on agents that actually know what they hell they’re doing!” She reached into the boot, for the knife she always had on her and she tried to calm herself since panicking would fog her mind and impede her fighting skills. “But if you’re going to try and kill me, let’s just get this over with.”

For a moment, Piper frowned, confused. And then he grinned slowly, shaking his head as he took a step toward her. “Lieutenant--” he said, holding back a laugh. “I’m afraid you have quite the wrong idea.” He held up both of his hands as if to say, don’t worry.

“I’m not here to kill you, or to do anything to you at all. I’m a simple tactical officer, just as you’re a...” he turned the PADD back to himself and clicked on her file. “Historian. And while we’re being honest with each other,” he continued, “It looks like both of our undercover agent days are over.” The hesitancy to speak the name of the organization was still there, although Piper had no doubt now that they shared the same background. It was still too taboo. And anything he said could easily be used against him.

“Let’s make one thing clear, Lieutenant. I have no communication with them, and haven’t in years. I’d like to ensure that the same goes for you, although it seems I don’t need to worry about that, given the special care you took to erase all trace of it from your record. Fortunately for me,” he drawled, “I know what to look for, having done it myself. After what happened with Admiral Marcus, do you really think I’d have a job if I still worked for them?”

Mika let out a soft chuckled and looked up at him with a smile. “High praise coming from you, Commander.” She looked back down at their intruder. “How the hell did he get one the ship while it was docked? And more importantly…why is he here?”

Image

“He must have some way of getting through the shields. We’ll let someone else deal with that. But we should probably get him somewhere he’s less likely to be found-- for now.” Piper gave her a lopsided grin. “Whatever he’s here for, looks like we’re the ones who are going to have to deal with him. And besides,” he added with a grin. “We’re probably the most qualified.”
