How to improve your résumé

Almost September, university/high school is starting again and you’re still looking for a job. You applied a hundred times but you never got an interview? Maybe it’s time to change your résumé and in that case, this post is made just for you.

first of all: make it simple. forget all those cute colourful designs or those little flowers. this is a NO. stay simple. the hiring guy is supposed to focus on your résumé, not be distracted by all the colours on it. and also. use normal fonts. it was proven that sometimes they won’t even bother looking at your résumé if it takes them an hour to read through it. oh and don’t write too big or too small as well, keep a normal size.

stick to PDF or Word document. PDF is easy to use and can be opened on any device. but sometimes they would also recommend Word document as you can get a preview from e-mail on Windows. it makes it easier to sort every résumé they get.

• please please please, unless you apply for a business or social network related job, DO NOT ADD YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA. the only interesting thing for them can be your Linkedin account, and sometimes they don’t even care about it.

are you really going to put your babysitting experience when you’re applying for a engineering job? make your résumé regarding the job you’re applying for, get rid of extra things that won’t really matter for the job!!!

• you know this loooong list of skills every one put on their résumé? totally a NO. Don’t put more than 5 skills and don’t list them, list the number of years you’ve been using them, it will only make your résumé better!!

• before applying, read the qualifications carefully. then when making your résumé, it must reflect the qualifications of the job, that’s a good way to get the attention of the hiring guy. that’s exactly what he will be looking for!

• don’t be too repetitive. for exemple if you’ve been using word in several of your job, don’t put “use of computer and software” every time you mention your old jobs. it’s just a waste of time. the hiring guy will know what duties you had to do in your previous jobs.

• and if you have no experience: talk about your degree, how involved you are in your studies. if you emphasises that you’ve been working in order to be ready to face the future, they will totally get it! we can’t all find a job and we all have to start somewhere.

• if you’re applying for a job that isn’t near your house, don’t mention your address!

Well that’s all for the tips. They are also two fabulous websites that can help you MyPerfectResumé and JobScan. You can also go to your local library, they would probably have JobNow! and Brainfuse, two useful softwares.

Once you finally get your interview, don’t forget to smile and be open. make some research about the job and ask questions about your position. get ready to reply to some questions on your résumé. and most importantly: be honest.

I hope this was helpful and that you guys will find a job that you like! If you have any questions, feel free to ask/message me!

2/100 Days of Productivity

✨ Hey guys ! It took me awhile, but I've finally put together all my notebooks for class. Since I've gotten that done, I think I'll be a bit more active online now. I just knew that if I didn't get this is done within the first few days, I wouldn't find the time to do it later. Also I've taken to using the living room floor instead of my desk, not sure why though 😂😂. I hope everyone's studies are going well. ✨

Inspirational Quotes

Everyone needs extra inspiration/motivation every once in a while. Therefore, I have compiled a list of some of my favourite inspirational Harry Potter quotes (quotes are from the books and films).

  • “Working hard is important. But there is something that matters even more, believing in yourself”
  • “Books! And cleverness! There are more important things! - Friendship! And Bravery!”
  • “When in doubt, go to the library”
  • “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”
  • “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”
  • “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends”
  • “Ah, music,” he said wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here”
  • “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on Earth should that mean that it is not real?”
  • “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic”
  • “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the the light”
  • “In dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own”
  • “It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be”
  • “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are”
  • “Well, [bad] times like that bring out the best in some people and the worst in others’
  • “The ones who love us never really leave us, you can always find them in here”
  • “What’s life without a little risk?”
  • “We’re all human, aren’t we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving”
  • “You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve”
  • “Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect”
  • “No good sitting worrying about it. What’s coming will come, and we’ll meet it when it does”

I hope these quotes inspire you too!

Shoutout to all those people that have jobs like cleaning the bathrooms in rest areas or gas stations, to the people that take out the trash and wash dishes in restaurants, school janitors, house maids. You’re doing jobs that don’t get much recognition but are some of the toughest. stay awesome

Habits of successful students

Discipline: “discipline is doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t want to”, which means that you have to force yourself to start doing things.

Concentration: when you make a real effort in your work (study, homeworks etc…) you will be more likely to actually focus, understand and learn.

Organization: always set tasks and goals and organize a study-schedule. Maybe you don’t really want to plan all the week, but if you just wake up and open your agenda/bullet journal/iphone calendar and write down all the things you have to do, setting due dates and deadlines, you’ll feel more conscious and encouraged to stay on track.

Tasks-splitting: sometimes, you write down your tasks. Some of these tasks may be very hard and complicated, and it will take a long long time to complete them. So, you can split them in smaller tasks, so you will feel satisfied after a shorter period of time, instead of studying for hours and still seeing that chapter undone on your study-schedule.

Watch the sunrise: when I wake up late, I feel like I don’t have enought time to do my work and lose my motivation. I literally panic and then I think “whatever, I could not complete all the things anyway”. So, if you wake up earlier you will feel more positive and  controlled.

Smart reading: try not to read your textbook just like a newspaper. For every paragraph you read, try to underline and write down key words and then your question about that subject. Literally, turn your textbook into questions. If you write down question - particularly why…? - and think about the answer, you will be more likely to remember that stuff later.

Healthy lifestile: if you don’t drink enough water in the morning, you will be more likely to have a decrease of concentration in the afternoon/evening, so: stay hydrated. Try also to have some snaks every one-two hours: feed your brain

Eclipse Tip:

Don’t look at the sun during totality, look at your family. Your friends. Look at their faces. During the few minutes of darkness, the alien technology used to disguise their real faces will be disabled and their true forms will be revealed. Make sure your loved ones are actually human. If they are in disguise, use your phone to check your own face. There are things about your heritage they may be hiding from you. This is your only chance until the next eclipse in 2024.

Back to School/Uni Tips!

I’m headed into my 3rd year of uni, so I thought I’d make a post sharing my tips on how to do well in school, not burn out, and keep your mental health relatively stable.

1. Snacks - seriously, don’t leave home without at least 2 substantial snacks in your bag. If you’re go-go-going all day and suddenly your sitting in a lecture about to crash cause you haven’t eaten anything all day, you’re gonna want snacks. Some suggestions: Cashews (they’re not super loud/crunchy, so they’re perfect for lecture snackin’), a granola bar, an apple, cherry tomatoes, trail mix.

2. Don’t buy the textbook before you go to your first class - I’ve worked at a university bookstore for 2 years, and every year, people end up buying 700$ worth of first year text books, and then they don’t even use them. Wait. and then wait some more. If there are required readings, then get the textbook, if your prof says there will be questions from the textbook on the exam, then get the textbook, but trust me, for 90% of first year classes (and a lot of other ones) you don’t need the textbook. SAVE YOUR WALLETS

3. Take notes efficiently - honestly the best way to take notes, is type up the lecture notes that are provided, BEFOREHAND, and then during lecture, fill in the blanks/add information/take down any important things your prof is saying as you go through the lecture on your laptop in a different color. This way you’re much less likely to miss any important information, you won’t be confused about what to take down, and you won’t fall into the trap of taking down notes that are already being provided to you. After class, or while making study notes, copy these notes out by hand to remember what you learned.

4. Keep it simple - pretty notes are GREAT if you have the time, but once you get to upper level uni, and you have 100 slides of notes to turn into study notes, you will not have the time to make your notes look aesthetically pleasing. Just get the info down so you can focus on learning it.

5. Have a designated study space - i did all of my highschool homework and studying in my bed, and 90% of the time, I ended up falling asleep. My bed wasn’t going to cut it for uni, so I got a cheap ikea desk, and it’s made me so much more organized and productive.

6. Take as much ‘you time’ as possible - take a bath. light candles. binge watch a tv show. veg out with a book for 4 hours if you have the time. do your makeup super special one day. get yourself that venti pumpkin spice latte with extra whip whenever you feel like it. Uni is a shitty time I’m not gonna lie. It’s stressful as f*ck, and whenever you can spare a couple hours or a couple dollars to TREAT YO SELF, do it.

7.  If you have anxiety, CUT THE COFFEE. caffeine is a huge trigger for anxiety. Caffeine takes away from your sleep, messes with your adrenalin systems, and can make you super paranoid and anxious all the time.

8. If you think your in the wrong major, change it - I started in geology, and I HATED IT. Now I’m in psych and I love it. It is never too late for a change of program. If you think you’re doing something you don’t wanna do, or your not enjoying it, don’t do it.

9. For mornings you have to be ready and out the door, or if you’re a person who always runs late, have a getting-ready routine and get it down pat. Have a mental list of things you need to do, and things you need to remember, and find out how much time it takes you. Get up at 8am, shower, wash face/brush teeth, get dressed, do makeup, pack bag, remember keys, wallet, laptop, notebook, pen and train pass, have breakfast, put on shoes, leave by 9am.

10. Utilize your time in transit. - finish a reading, go over flashcards, read study notes, listen to an album you’ve been meaning to listen to, read a book, read some fanfic, idk but don’t just sit there unless just sitting there is what you need.

11. Find a hobby or passion that is separate from your school/uni life. Whether its playing sports, or running, reading, collecting plants, making scrapbooks, curating a refined taste in tea, having baths, writing in a journal, find something that if you’re bored with watching shows or studying, you can go do it, and enjoy it, and get your mind off all the other shit that’s going on in your life for awhile.

A reminder for the girls with big plans

To all the girls with big dreams, who have been told that they are ‘too preoccupied with success’, or that they are ‘too selfish’ or ‘too ambitious’ - do not listen to the people who speak those words. If you love something that much, and will pursue it to the ends of the earth, do not give it up for anyone. Hold it close to your heart and understand that you are not obligated to dim your sparkle for anybody. In your life, there will always be people who tell you that you are too much or too little. They will say a woman is too assertive, or too reserved. They will say she feels too little or too much, that ambition is selfish. They may even be hurt or offended that you do not think the same. Yet at the end of the day, know in your heart that you are the only one who will ever know whether you are truly enough and that is what’s important. Go out there and smash the glass ceiling to pieces.

Health

  • You should be drinking at least 2 liters of water per day to keep your body hydrated and properly working! Buy a reusable bottle of water and keep it next to you when studying or even on your nightstand, so you can drink as soon as you wake up. There are plenty of apps that help those who forget to drink (x, x, x). If the problem is that you don’t like the taste of water, flavor it with strawberries, blueberries, lemon or even some herbs.
  • Don’t skip meals! Food is so important to you. Give your body the vitamins and energy it needs. Remember to stay healthy. Keep healthy and delicious snacks in the fridge, cook some delicious food and make your body happy. Here are some teas and coffee drinks.
  • Get fresh air and exercise. This helps with mental alertness, concentration, an efficient memory and a positive mood.
  • @semistudies compiled some tips for studying on your period and @zibliedraws shared how to alleviate menstrual cramps.
  • If you need to survive a hangover, here are some tips.
  • Asking for help is not a weakness. Self-care is not selfish.
  • Don’t  forget to take your meds! Write it on a board, set up a phone alarm, download an app (x, x).
  • If you are struggling with depression, here are some tips to study. And another nine tips. If you suffer from anxiety or are an ADHD student,     here are some masterposts to help you out. @themkneesocks also compiled a list of chrome extensions for disabilities.
  • Teenagers (13 to 17 years old) ought to sleep from 8 to 10 hours every day, while young adults (18 to 25) only need 7 to 9. Sleep easy when it’s time to do so.
  • If nevertheless, you need to stay awake, here are some things that are not coffee that keep you awake and tips to stay awake during an all-nighter.

  Stationery

Planning

  • Keeping everything on a schedule is important. And for that, you need somewhere to plan. There are dozens of options nowadays. You can choose to buy a planner, set up a bullet journal or even print some free printables.
  • @learnal and @lifewithnerdyglasses wrote two masterposts about their favorite printables, which I’d recommend taking a look (x, x). You can also check out the printables tag on Tumblr.
  • The bullet journal system was created by Ryder Carroll, but has since then suffered considerable changes in the studyblr community. Here is a guide to bullet journaling, how students can take advantage of the system and how to set up a digital bullet journal.
  • Here are some spreadsheet ideas.
  • @kuroristudies even has a post explaining how she makes her weekly views.

Classes

  • Register for classes that are useful, that interest you or even that you know will help you out with your chosen career path. Keep in mind that you study best when you have at least some kind of interest in the subjects.
  • ·Learn how to study from textbooks, how to give amazing presentations and take useful notes in class. Get the most out of your lecture. Annotate effectively.
  • Buy different colour highlighters and color code your notes.
  • @plannerdy came up with a low-stress college study strategy.
  • Record yourself talking. Explain the topics you’re covering out loud, to your family, your friends, your pets or even an inanimate object.
  • You need to write an essay? I’ve got you covered.
  • Plan on always getting the best marks you can in each test you take. Measure yourself against yourself.
  • STAY ON TOP OF YOUR HOMEWORK!
  • Review your notes every day. At the end of the week, grab the notes you took during the week, organise them by concept and consolidate it all onto 1 SHEET OF PAPER.
  • Sometimes you just need to study all day.
  • Overlearn whenever you can. You know you’re prepared when someone asks you about a topic and you can answer them in a thorough and accurate way.
  • Time management is key.
  • Come up with a study plan and stick with it! Be productive: complete the 100 days of productivity, gather your battle gear and set up a helpful school mindset.
  • Make use of small pockets of time to work on assignments. Don’t underestimate the amount of work you can get done at the end of the week by taking advantages of those precious minutes.
  • It is possible to get hard A’s in college and still have a life.
  • Set up goals. Monthly, weekly, daily.
  • MOTIVATION IS BULLSHIT. Rely on self-discipline. It is not the aesthetic part of things that will get you out of bed to exercise or study. Work harder than you think you did yesterday.
  • Avoid burning out!
  • Prioritize keeping yourself organised. Keep your study space and your house cleaned. After your first day of class go through all your syllabi and put any major due dates in your planner. Make into a study guide things your teachers emphasize in class. Make flashcards.
  • Here are some tips for when you’re tired and/or need to focus.
  • Don’t worry if you mess up your notes. And be careful with flashcards mistakes.
  • Achieve your full academic potential, even when you don’t want to study.
  • Need to catch up? I’ve got you. School just got hard for the first time? Guess what. Not anymore.
  • Don’t take criticism personally. Learn what you can from any comments that are made – and discard the rest as being useless information. Develop a positive mindset. Set some goals and achieve them.
  • STOP. PROCRASTINATING. RIGHT. NOW.
  • Estimate the number of study hours based on course difficulty. Rather than focusing on the arbitrary two hours of study for every hour in class method for determining your needed study hours per week, follow these steps.
  • Column 1 – Enter each of your semester course names.
  • Column 2 – Determine the difficulty (for you) of each course:
  • §  High Difficulty = 3 hours of study
  • §  Medium Difficulty = 2 hours of study
  • §  Low Difficulty = 1 hour of study.
  • Column 3 – Enter the number of hours per week you attend each class.
  • Column 4 – Enter the number of hours study hours associated with high, medium, or low difficulty.
  • Column 5 – Multiply the number of hours in class (Column 3) by the number of predicted study hours (Column 4).
  • Then, add all the study hours in Column 5 for the approximate total hours you need to study per week.
