Time pt. 1

  • Had to break up the post as there is a character limit.
  • Havent written anything in a while, so if it’s rambling or error-filled, my apologies.

Summary: Arjun and Kaitlyn hanging out one night. Kaitlyn talks about her suspicions of Becca and MC. (Story takes place Prior to them announcing their relationship)

(Also, there are mentions of marijuana and cigarettes, FYI mild language)

—————————————-

“…No, but seriously, dude… why the fuck has it taken us this long to smoke together?”

Kaitlyn asked as she turned to look at Arjun, watching him struggle to reattach the roach clip onto what little remained of the joint they shared.

Arjun’s brow furrowed in concentration, his fingers fumbling over and over again, as he tried and failed to complete the task at hand.

Only after nearly dropping the roach down the front of his shirt, did Kaitlyn reach over to help him.

After securing the clip with relative, she leaned over and extended her arm towards Arjun, while keeping a firm grip on the joint.

She didn’t pass it.

“I don’t trust you, now,” Kaitlyn said, chuckling. “If you drop this, that’s all I’ve got ‘til Monday. Rachel went home for the weekend, and she’s my only supply.

“Yeah, yeah. Butterfingers, I know, whatever. But anyway… ” Arjun paused as he leaned over to take a hit.

“But anyway, what? You still didn’t answer, me.”

“C’mon Kait,” he shrugged, inhaled deeply, and chuckled lightly in response, “Like you can’t guess. You’re a smart girl, you can put it together.”

As Arjun exhaled, a dense cloud of smoke engulfed Kaitlyn; she closed her eyes, momentarily losing herself in the heady aroma.

“Well, hm. Lemme think—“ Kaitlyn trailed off, lost in thought.

A comfortable silence fell between them as the pair sat on the patio behind Vasquez’s old house.

The week-long rain showers left the mid-spring air uncharacteristically humid— the musky cloud of smoke fused with the scent of budding flowers and damp earth. The combination seemed to intensify her high.

She loved this time of year.

Kaitlyn removed her sweater and balled it up, using it as a makeshift pillow as she reclined on the sodden, wooden steps.

“Well,” She began again. “If I were to guess… I’d say since you so desperately wanted to gain my parents approval, you probably didn’t want them knowing that you, Mr. Golden Boy, are a bonafide stoner.”

At that, Kaitlyn descended into a fit of giggles while Arjun looked on, a sheepish look on his face.

“You done now? Before you blow a gasket?” Arjun inquired as Kaitlyn’s laughter finally began to subside.

He watched as she wiped tears from her eyes. The ghost of her smile still lingering on her face. “Thanks, I needed a laugh after the week I’ve had.”

“Anytime, I guess. Not that it was all that funny…” Arjun trailed off, and paused for a moment before taking a deep breath.

“So..”

“…So?”

“Look, dude. Are you gonna tell me what all this is about? You’ve been dodging me— For WEEKS, I might add. Then out of the blue, you wanna smoke me out. So what gives, Kait? What’s up?”

Kaitlyn remained quiet. She covered her face with her hands, and sighed.

When she finally did speak, she did so in a hush, mumbled voice.

“Ugh. Okay. So. You know that Becca girl, right? She’s our new housemate. And I know you haven’t really been around— sorry, by the way. I know that’s on me. But, yeah. She moved in here a few months ago. And I dunno if he’s mentioned her, but she’s Chris’ ex.”

“I mean I know of her. And from what I’ve heard, she kinda sounds like an entitled dick. But I can’t say I’ve met her personally or anything.. but anyway, what about her?”

“Well, I’m like… 97.8% sure MC and her are fucking.”

Time pt. 2

Part two.

Admittedly, Kaitlyn had suspicions about the two for some time now.

The shared looks, their body language. Not to mention, the fact that MC randomly invited Becca to festival over summer. All signs pointed at some level of interest between the two. But despite her paranoia, before this moment, Kaitlyn had yet to voice her concerns out loud. It was too painful.

And the mere thought of voicing her opinion made her nauseous.

But tonight, under the influence of sativa along of being in the company of an old, trusted friend, Kaitlyn was suddenly overwhelmed with dread as the gravity of her words played over and over in her mind.

“I dunno if they’re ‘dating,’ dating, but I’m pretty sure they’re at least fooling around. I honestly don’t know how to deal with it, dude. Like, I’ve been a mess over this and I just can’t keep that everything’s cool when it’s not.”

Although she didn’t cry, Arjun could hear the visceral pain in Kaitlyn’s voice as she further explained the situation in detail.

“So that’s basically it. And like—“ Kaitlyn suddenly stopped speaking mid-sentence, and started patting herself down, as though looking for something.

With a frustrated sigh, she stood up and checked the back pockets of her jeans.

“Now where the fu— ugh, I can’t see shit. Hey, can you hand me your phone for a sec? I just need to use the light, and I left mine on the charger.”

Arjun grabbed his phone from his shirt pocket, and handed it to Kaitlyn.

“Just swipe up, you’ll see it.”

Seconds later, the porch was flooded with light.

Kaitlyn swept the narrow beam across steps, and flung her hoodie-pillow onto the grass. As the sweater tumbled down the steps, a light blue rectangle fell from the pocket, and landed near Arjun’s feet. He picked it up.

“Cigarettes AND weed? Kaitlyn, Kaitlyn, Kaitlyn,” he said, shaking his head in mock-disappointment. “You naughty girl. Now what would Momma Liao think of this?”

Kaitlyn flipped him the bird and tossed his phone back to him.

As she sat back down, she removed a cigarette and promptly lit it. She inhaled deeply, and shrugged. “What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”

Arjun chuckled and plopped next to her on the steps.

“You want?”

“Nah I’m good. They make my asthma flare up.”

“Oh yeah, these’ll make it flare up, but weed’s fair game, huh?”

“Shut up,” He said, chucking. “It’s true. Anyway, aside from being pretty bad in general, aren’t they like, bad for your voice?”

Kaitlyn puffed away for a moment before responding.

“I mean yeah. Duh. But Natasha got me in the habit of having one before shows— she convinced me they made my singing more ‘sultry.’ I guess it kinda stuck with me. I don’t smoke often, really just before I go on stage, and in times of stress. Obviously... this is one of those times.”

Arjun nodded in response, but didn’t speak.

“Anyway, like I was saying. Like I haven’t exactly voiced my concerns to anyone else. I mean I kinda hinted at Zack, but I don’t think he wanted to say anything behind her back, ya know? Got any advice? I could use a voice of reason right about now.”

Kaitlyn put out her cigarette on the bottom of her shoe, and turned to look at Arjun.

The weed was making his head swim, and despite the urge to offer some comforting words, he was hesitant to speak in fear of saying something stupid. He didn’t want to ruin the night.

He hesitated a moment and gathered his thoughts. When he finally spoke, he did so cautiously.

“I dunno, Kait... I don’t think I’m the best person to ask. I don’t really know MC that well, and I don’t know Becca at all.”

“I know, I know. And I’m sorry for putting you on the spot and whatnot, but I think I just need something— someone, to help me feel better about this.”

He turned to look at her, and under the dim moonlight peeking through the dark clouds, he could see tears streaming down her face.

Arjun scooted closer to her, and put an arm around her. She leaned into his embrace, and rested her head on his shoulder.

“Take what I say with a grain of salt. But I guess if I had any advice to give, I’d say try not to focus on them. It’s making you miserable.

I know it’s easier said than done, and I know living with both of them is probably harder than I could begin to imagine. But for the sake of your sanity, and your friendship with MC, just try.

Even if it means talking to her and letting her know you might need some space for a while. To sort shit out. You guys were basically best friends before you started dating, and I know she means a lot to you. And I don’t think you want to lose that.

Just take sometime to heal.”

Arjun could feel her sobbing, and felt hot droplets fall onto his shirt. He held her tighter.

“Besides,” He said. “I know what it’s like to be in love with someone who doesn’t exactly love you back. It’ll get better.

Just give it some time.”

Regret p.9

MC’s POV

I was woken up by someone shaking my shoulder. I open my eyes to see myself leaning onto someone with my face relatively close to their neck. I shot up from my original position to see Kaitlyn giggling at me. The movie we were watching was already rolling its credits, everyone else was busy either cleaning up or talking to Peter and Grace. They seemed to have noticed me waking up and initiated a conversation with me.

“I though Kaitlyn was exaggerating when she told me you were the type of person who falls asleep while watching horror movies but now that I’ve seen it personally, I’m impressed,” Peter explained with a big grin on his face.

I blushed at what he said from embarrassment. I tried my best to stay awake the whole movie but the tiredness and stress from this whole meeting thing kept me awake for days. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep in the middle of the movie. It’s so embarrassing.”

“You don’t have to apologize dear,” I turned to Grace and she had a gentle smile on her face. “You must be tired from all the preparations for tonight. Kaitlyn wasn’t even able to move an inch the whole time because you were asleep so soundly.”

Mom!” her cheeks were turning red from embarrassment but her parents just chuckled at her reaction. Not soon after, they stood up to prepare to leave.

“Thank you for the dinner. It was really good. It’s already late and you children need to get some sleep. We’re going to head out now,” Kaitlyn’s dad waved at all of us while heading to the door with his wife.

Just before they stepped out, Kaitlyn’s mom turned her head at me. “Please take care of our baobei, Emily.”

I gave her a nod. “I will. We’ll see you tomorrow.”

Me and the others watched as Mr. and Mrs. Liao exit the house and went inside their car. We gave them a final wave before they backed out of the driveway and headed to their destination. Tonight’s been a long night. I went back inside the house to find Becca looking at me as if she’s in need to a lot of answers.

——————

Becca’s POV

“We need to talk,” I pulled Emily up to my room before Kaitlyn could approach her. She just let me drag her along without any resistance until we reached the inside of my room.

I shut the door behind me before I turned around to look at her. “Do I get an explanation for everything that just happened?” I crossed my arms in front of me to indicate I was being serious.

“I told you me and Kaitlyn have to pretend to be together right?” she looked at me as if she was confused about my question.

“You did but I wasn’t informed that there was gonna be hugging, holding hands, kissing and cuddling involved. I thought it was gonna be more of the normal talking and flirting stuff.”

“You think they’d believe that? They’ve seen how Kaitlyn and I have acted around each other before. They’ll notice if we didn’t act the way we did earlier.”

“Then just explain it to them if they ask! Being together doesn’t always require physical contact like what you two did earlier!” my voice started to get louder as I got more frustrated.

“Becca, were you jealous?” she studied my face with her eyes. It looks like she wants to smile but trying to keep herself from doing it.

“Me? Jealous? Why would I get jealous over something like that?” I replied defensively. This time she didn’t try to hold back the wide smile on her face as she silently stood there, staring at me.

“I don’t know. Maybe cause you weren’t the one holding my hand or hugging me or getting kissed by me or cuddling me?” her eyes were staring intently into mine like she was trying to hypnotize me into proving her right. I quickly avoided it before I fell into her trap.

I stayed quiet, not agreeing with what she said but also not denying it. Suddenly, I felt her hand touch mine which caused me to jolt. I turned my head to look at her only to see her lean down fast enough to give me a quick kiss on my cheek.

“You were jealous, weren’t you?” she continued teasing me, still having my hand clasped in hers. “So Rebecca Davenport can get jealous. Well, thinking about it now, I should already know by now that you’re indeed the jealous type considering how you spilled coffee on me when we first met cause of Chris.”

“Please don’t bring that up,” I sighed trying to keep that memory out of my head. She just laughed. It’s hard to stay mad at her when she’s like this. My lips slowly lifted into a smile and when she saw that, she pulled me into a hug.

“It’s just for a few more days. If you want, I can stay here for the night and we can cuddle before going to sleep.”

“I’m liking that idea.”

“Just cuddling and sleeping though,” she held onto my wrist and pulled my hand away which was slowly exploring her back going lower and lower. “None of that.”

“We’ll see,” I gave her a mischievous smile.

—————–

Kaitlyn’s POV

I woke up to a text from my mom to remind me about today’s plans and that they will come here later to pick us up. All of us are going to see a musical play before heading out for lunch and they wanted me to bring Emily along.

I got up and headed out the door, still in my sleepwear to head to Emily’s room. I knocked a couple of times on her door but no one seems to be answering so I opened it to find her bed empty. Maybe she woke up early?

I closed the door and prepared to head back to my room but then I heard another door open. I turned around to see Emily exiting from Becca’s room, still wearing the clothes she had last night and looking a bit groggy.

Oh. That was the only thing that popped out of my mind as I came to realize what happened after my parents’ visit. She seemed to have noticed me and stood stiffened in her location.

“Good morning,” I greeted her with an insincere smile. “My mom said they’ll pick us up later.”

“Good morning,” she nodded and we headed to our own rooms.

It’s clear that she and Becca spent the night together, sleeping in each other’s arms. The image of it ended up making me feel like there’s a hole in my gut. After my parents head home to Austin, they will finally be able to go back to each other without a hitch.

I guess I expected too much from everything that happened last night. That kiss and all the other romantic gestures were all just for the sake of pretending in front of my parents after all. She has Becca now and I’m sure she’s already moved on from our past. She’s only going out of her way to help me.

Don’t read too much into it, Kaitlyn. I told myself as I prepared my outfit. It’s the red dress that I’ve worn a couple of times before. Taking it out again brings back so many memories. This is the same dress I wore during the KPS party and it’s also the same dress I wore on the formal. The very same dress I wore when my parents accidentally found out I was gay and a whole lot more.

I left it on my bed before leaving my room to head for the bathroom for a nice shower. I met Becca along the way and we both just stared at each other in silence awkwardly before we parted ways. Guess there’s a sense of rivalry now.

Regret p.8

Becca’s POV

Why is everyone so nervous of meeting the Liaos? I get that the house isn’t 100% great and all that but it’s good enough that we have a place to stay in instead of having to crash into some classmate’s couch or choosing to sleep in the library. Kaitlyn’s also been pacing back and forth all day, it’s giving me a headache. I swear if she doesn’t stop, I’m gonna tie her up on a chair.

“Stop moving around, Kaitlyn,” finally somebody said it! Zack is now officially my hero. Much to my disappointment though, she sent him a murderous glare and didn’t stop pacing. I’m done.

“Calm down, Liao. It’s just your parents. It’s not the end of the world,” I rolled my eyes at her. I didn’t expect her to respond by screaming at all of us. I swear she’s gonna turn green soon and transform into a female Hulk if nobody calms her down.

We all stared at her as if she’s turned crazy. I searched for Emily with my eyes and she was looking at Kaitlyn in a different way than the rest of us, something more of the look of being worried. She took a step forward when she heard Kaitlyn apologize and tried to comfort her. Classic mom friend.

“Kaitlyn, it’s gonna be okay. We’ll make sure things don’t go bad, okay?” she was held her arm and let Liao settle her forehead on her shoulder.

I know Emily loves being the first one to comfort anyone in the group that feels bad and the way they’re positioned now doesn’t mean anything more than that but it sets my blood on fire. I just wanna pull Kaitlyn off of her and take her place.

There was a knock on the door. That’s definitely Mr. and Mrs. Liao. Everyone stared at the door, feeling a lot more nervous than usual but here I am preventing myself from singing a happy song cause they’ll finally have to pull away from that almost hugging position. I’m not being jealous. I just don’t want poor little Kaitlyn to think they have a chance. I already called dibs on Emily anyway.

They did finally pull away but none of them let go of each others hands when they walked to the door. Gag. Okay, calm down Becca. They’re just pretending. You’re definitely not jealous.

Kaitlyn greeted her parents and Emily soon followed after. It looks like Mr. Liao highly approves of Emily now. I mean, duh. She’s like the best. She’s really pretty, got good style, smart, caring, hot, and a lot of other good qualities. Anyone will be lucky to have her. I still can’t believe Liao just let go of her like that. Well, it does look like she regrets letting her go.

Looks like the others already met her parents. Only Abbie, Tyler, and me are unfamiliar with them. After both Abbie and Tyler were introduced, things went awkward cause their relationship got brought up. Oh, hell no. I won’t let this turn into a bad night cause of their stupid fights. They all should watch how to professionally handle this.

“I’m Becca. A new addition to the group. It’s nice to have you both here tonight,” I gave Mrs. Liao a smile that I’ve practiced a lot of times at Uskea. This smile right here has calmed down a lot of angry customers and prevented them from calling my manager.

“It’s wonderful to meet you all and thank you for looking after our daughter for us,” Peter interrupted. “It’s nice to see that our baobei is surrounded by nice and kind people. Especially you, Emily. You’ve been such a good influence to our daughter since you two got together. I hope that you both will stay together much longer, even better if you two get married in the future.”

Marriage? Already? Is he the kind of dad that already has the wedding prepared down to the very last detail? Shucks. If he knew the truth I’m sure he won’t be talking about that right now. I tried to keep myself from making a face at his claim. Think of them as customers, Becca. Treat them right. I took a deep breath a kept my cool.

Emily invited them over to the dining table where we already have the dinner all set. I’m sure they will enjoy the meal since Abbie makes good food. I can’t deny that it’s somewhat good that I’m friends with her cause I get to eat good food every once in a while and not an all takeouts and ramen diet.

During the meal, we discussed about school stuff, Chris’ political reign and his football leadership, Zig’s work at the coffee shop and his scholarship, Tyler’s computer proficiency, James’ position at the newspaper, Zack’s newfound hobby, Abbie’s artworks, my work at Uskea, and more.

All throughout the conversation, Emily and Kaitlyn were quiet. They would join in and make some remarks, giggle at some jokes, but they were mostly focused on eating. I had to sit a bit further away from Emily to make way for Kaitlyn. I should be the one sitting on her right side though.

Grace caught on and noticed they’ve both been quiet and that Kaitlyn did not exactly have the appetite to eat, which is fairly new since she eats a lot. It makes you question where she puts all those food in that petite body of hers. “Are you okay, baobei?”

Kaitlyn flinched and snapped out of it before replying, “Yes, mom. I was just thinking about some stuff… for the band, you know? I’m sorry I spaced out.” Seriously, Liao? That’s your best excuse? They’ll catch on if you can’t even stop spacing out.

Just as I thought that, Emily leaned in and kissed her cheek. What in the actual hell was that?! I stared at Emily while maintaining an indifferent expression. I’m not jealous. I’m just shocked and surprised. I didn’t know this was part of the deal. I thought it was just holding hands, acting sweet, flirting, and all that. I wasn’t told there was gonna be hugging and kissing. Someone’s got a lot of explaining to do!

———————

Kaitlyn’s POV

I didn’t expect Emily to lean down and kiss me. It’s just on the cheeks but it’s still a kiss. I felt my cheek flush red in embarrassment, my heart threatened to escape my chest. Daggers were also being shot in our direction. I followed Emily’s line of sight when she turned her head around and saw Becca glaring at the both of us.

Her face looked indifferent but I could feel that she’s getting very jealous. I didn’t expect Emily to kiss me and I’m sure she didn’t expect it either. I don’t know why but I feel really happy seeing her get jealous like that. Maybe I secretly wanted her to have a taste of what it’s like to see someone you like or love be romantic with someone else. Sorry Becca.

We finished dinner after talking about more school related things. Luckily, my parents haven’t brought up things between me and Emily yet except the ones before dinner. When all of us finished eating, Zack and Tyler took the dishes to the sink while Zig wiped the table clean.

The rest of us led my parents to the living room and had them sit on the couch so they can enjoy watching a movie they want to watch. Chris and James moved some of the beanbags in front of the TV for the rest of us to sit in.

Emily pulled me outside to talk to me about earlier. “Are you still nervous?” She was examining my face with worried eyes. Part of me feels special since she worries about me but a part of me also feels like it’s normal since she worries about everyone else.

“Just a bit. Thank you for making sure I’m okay though. It means a lot,” I gave her a warm smile. It really does mean a lot even though she’s doing it for me as just a friend. I would’ve long broken down if Emily wasn’t here.

“I’m sorry about earlier,” her hand reached up for her neck and she rubbed it, clearly feeling uncomfortable. “You know… the kiss.” The moonlight was hitting her face and it illuminated the blush that was spread across her cheeks. Seeing her that way made me want to shout out in glee.

“It’s fine,” I smiled at her shyly. We just stood there in silence for a few minutes before I decided to break it up. “Let’s head back inside. It’s cold here.”

She nodded her head and stretched out her hand at me beckoning me to hold it. I did and we entered the house with our hands clasped together. Everyone else was already in their position in front of the screen while waiting for the two of us.

“What are we watching?” Emily asked them with a smile on her face.

“Well, we decided to go for a horror movie since our baobei loves watching those,” my dad glanced at our hands which were joined together and gave us a big smile. I could feel that Becca was also staring at the both of us. Her eyes didn’t exactly leave us since Emily kissed me.

They all probably noticed that we didn’t have anywhere to sit. “I’ll go get some chairs from the dining room!” Chris stood up but we waved at him to tell him it’s fine. Emily and I used to always watch movies while sitting on the floor anyway.

I went ahead and sat on the floor with my legs crossed. To my surprise, Emily sat in front of me. I think she did it unvoluntarily and was equally surprised herself because she froze in horror. Becca’s glare turned sharp but I could see at the corner of my eye that my parents were smiling even wider now at the both of us.

Emily noticed it too and decided not to leave her position and just made herself comfortable, maintaining a small distance between us. As the movie progressed though, she slowly started to shift closer to me until she was finally leaning on me without noticing it. She watched through the gaps of her fingers while she was nestled against me and my arms subconsciously wrapped around her.

Amongst the screams of our friends, the eyes of my parents watching us more than they were watching the movie, and Becca’s glare that was burning a hole right through me, there was comfort and peace, not because I love horror movies but because I get to be this close to Emily again even if it won’t last long.

Dude these are great. My gay heart longs for interpersonal conflict. Thank you for quenching that dramatic thirst
