Hi I'm #5 // biochemist from beyond the grave // they/them // trans and not labeling // 20 // Having a pretentious ass shirt that says 'I already know I'm stupid but I probably know more about this than you' would probably shorten most of my conversations

You want an update on the protests in STL? Cops: still racist. White cis privilege: running rampant with a camera.

Just got back from standing in front of riot police in a bright orange sundress and glittery eyeliner. I wanted to see how far white privilege and traditional beauty standards could take me.

I stood between several black women and a white trans woman who were questioning the line of riot police and not getting any replies or eye contact. One of the black women was asking the police if they were wearing body cameras and her friend replied that the cop couldn’t hear her because she was black. She turned to me and I asked the police, and got silence as well. The ladies moved on down the line of police, but I stayed and asked if I could move forward to talk to another officer at the end of the line. The cop who had previously ignored every single question nodded and said yes to me. I walked over the police line.

Let me repeat that: I walked over the riot police line.

The police line that would huddle together and reaffirm their shield and baton grips when black people walked closer, that had held their shields out to push protesters back.

I walked over it. I spoke to an officer and had a conversation about when they received body cameras, and how to identify if an officer was wearing one.

And then I walked away.

Next time you accuse the protesters of instigating violence, consider that every agitation I have seen was initiated by people outside the protest trying to agitate people or police preemptively closing in on people. Next time you talk about how white privilege doesn’t exist or isn’t really that bad, consider that I walked over a riot police line, got answers, and wasn’t arrested or even asked to step back.

Time to invest in more brightly colored sundresses. #expectus

TIPS FOR HURRICANE IRMA. STAY SAFE MY FLORIDA FRIENDS! Gas prices are already up to $3 and water is hard to find until new deliveries come in. I have to drive much farther out for supplies.

Image transcription:

1. Start running your ice makers now and bagging the ice in freezer bags. Fill as much space in between your freezer items as you can.

**2. Call your doctor NOW and refill your prescriptions for at least a month or two.

3. Freeze regular tap water for pets, cleaning or drinking in tupperware-type containers. Remember to leave a small bit of space between the top of the water & the lids so the ice expands but doesn’t crack the container.

4. Fill up all vehicles with fuel, check tires and oil.

5. Have cash on hand. Go to the ATM, and withdraw at least enough to get you through tolls and gas out of town. Call your bank if you plan on leaving the state so they don’t freeze your card for out-of-area “suspicious” transactions. [Transcriber note: some banks also have an online option to do this.]

6. Take photos of all items in your home. You will need this for insurance claims. Be sure to take screenshots of all important documents, like insurance numbers, mortgage information, etc and send it to your email. Take originals with you in sealed bags or plastic bins.

7. Buy plenty of pet & livestock food and supplies and have vet records handy in case you need to shelter them at a storm-safe facility.

8. Share your evacuation plans with family members so they know where you’re headed.

9. Consider putting heirlooms and photos in plastic bins in a high place, second floor, or safe room if you don’t plan on taking them with you.

10. SECURE ALL FIREARMS & AMMUNITION PROPERLY.

11. Put old rags and beach towels on your windowsills (inside the home). Even with the best windows and shutters, water seeping from the wind pressure happens. A few damp towels is better than soaked drywall or floors!

12. Shutter your windows and doors and bring everything outside into your garage or house by Thursday. Do not wait until the day before. Better to get done early and relax than wait until its too late, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE MANDATORY PERSONNEL (hospital employee or first responder).

13. If you don’t already have your hurricane supplies ready, you might want to get them now. Shelves are already empty in some places. Supplies typically are at LEAST a week worth of water, non perishable foods, batteries, flashlights, FM radio (you will NOT have cell phone service if towers go down).

14. Day before the storm, fill your bathtubs with water. You’ll want some accessible water for towel-like baths if you do not have running water for a number of days.

15. Start eating your perishables now and toss anything before the last garbage pick up this week. You do not want mold or rotting food in your home or fridge for a week or more.

**16. If you’re pregnant, be sure to call your OB/GYN and get clearance if you need to be held at the hospital depending on what week you’re in. Be sure to take all of your prenatal records with you in case you go into early labor.

**17. If you or a loved one is dependent on power for life-treating medicine or medical machines, call your hospital and see if you can be added to the medical necessity wait-list so you can weather the storm in one of their facilities that has a back up generator. Typically only the patient and ONE legal guardian is allowed - FYI! My dad was registered with University of Miami Hospital and bed capacity fills up quickly!

**18. Similar to $17, call FPL and make sure that you are listed on their priority medical list if you rely on power for medical treatment. You would have had to preregister with them for this but double checking if you are on that list can determine if you should evacuate or not.

19. If you live in an area that floods, see if there is a parking garage nearby where you can leave your car. It is better to pay $30+ in parking per day than filing a total loss flood claim.

20. Check with your local city regarding sandbag distribution dates and times. You should get at least 4-5 per standard door.

21. Check your home first-aid kit. Make sure nothing is expired and that everyone in your family and/or staying with you during the storm knows where to find the kit.

22. Odds are, as you travel the next few days, you will see caravans of power trucks and power crews making their way to different parts of Florida. Be mindful of them and let them get to where they need to go. Everyone needs to arrive alive.

23. Visit Miami-Dade County Emergency Operations website and look up your zip code and see if it is designated a mandatory evacuation zone. http://www.miamidade.gov/hurricane/

24. Everyone should have a chance to prepare but some businesses, unfortunately, take advantage of the communities’ current vulnerability. Be sure to report price gouging in Florida via this hotline: 1-866-966-7226 http://myfloridalegal.com/pages.nsf/0/308348F71208C29085256EED00604673?OpenDocument

According to Mashable, some resource sites (posted Sep. 5 2017):

The National Hurricane Center should be the first place you go for accurate, timely info on wind speeds, forecasts, warnings, and everything else storm related. The website is a go-to site, but so is the main Twitter feed, along with the Atlantic Ops Twitter feed from the National Weather Service, which is also keeping up with the hurricane.
Florida, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean islands are expecting to take the brunt of the storm. Local leaders are posting updates and resources about preparing for the natural disaster. Florida Gov. Rick Scott held a briefing on Irma Tuesday evening after declaring a state of emergency. His Twitter pagehas more emergency updates. Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello, is also posting storm info and resources.
In south Florida, the Keys and Monroe County are preparing for landfall and many state agencies are keeping watch on the storm, and you can follow along.
The federal emergency agency, FEMA, is also full of storm updates and links out to social media accounts to follow about disaster preparedness and relief.

So I run, a lot. I’ve dealt with assholes trying to throw soda on me to screaming as they drive by, or yelling ‘fag’ at my brightly colored 6 inch shorts (they do have an inner netting). The thing I hate the MOST is when people honk, not to alert me of their presence, but to try to scare me, I mean loud ass slam on your horn for 5 seconds types of honks.

Anyway, I noticed that a white camaro in my neighborhood always did this when he saw me running. It turns out to be some teenage punk. One day, I see the car coming up from behind me on a reflection on a parked car. So I prime myself for an Oscar worthy performance.

Sure enough, he honks as he passes. I stop, and clutch my chest, I mean, like informercial levels of dramatics. And I crumble on the street. The little jerk has a conscience, apparently, because he turns the car around and drives back. He gets out and is audibly freaking out.

I’m still playing dead and he gets closer to try to check on me. He crouches down next to me to try to check for breathing.

I SCREAM in his ear, get back up, and go on the rest of my run.

Haven’t had to deal with the white camaro since.

first off i really hate doing this but i really need help

as some of you know my dad died of a heart attack on 26.08.17 leaving behind me, my physically disabled younger sister and my mother(who is my sister’s caretaker and can’t work bc of that). it was sudden and absolutely unexpected.

after a lot of complications i managed to gain access to his and my mother’s shared bank account(it’s a long story but tl;dr mum refused to remember passwords for anything ever since i can remember claiming that’s what he was for and he didn’t have a habit of writing any of them down).

…there is exactly 6.57pln or the equivalent of 1.84$ in the bank account. i have ~2900pln or abt 814$ on mine. we have some cash as well but it’s not much.

there are bills we have to pay before sept 1st. there’s a payment i have to make to continue studying at my uni which is 3900pln or 1095$ that i have to pay before october. my sister needs school supplies and physical therapy, new glasses, doctor’s appointments…we also need to eat… not to mention the costs connected to funeral.

i will look for a job asap but for now there’s so many other things we have to attend to and frankly it is all quite overwhelming.

so i’m asking you for help idk how it works but here you have the paypal.me link: x and if you need my email for it it’s olinek97.ng@gmail.com

sorry if it all is less coherent than it should be if you have any questions feel free to hmu. if you can’t spare anything to donate it’s ok and i understand 100% but please boost this. thank you

don’t start dating your crush if

  • the attraction is purely physical (wanting to bang them =/= romantic compatibility)
  • you feel pressure to change or hide parts of yourself to get them to like you
  • aspects of their lifestyle make you uncomfortable (i.e. alcohol/drug use, people they hang out with, etc.)
  • they invalidate or belittle your identity or your passions (i.e. “Bisexuality means you’re confused!” “Writing can’t be a real career!” etc.)
  • they never stop talking about their exes
  • they only talk to you to vent their emotional baggage
  • they routinely ignore you without explanation
  • they’re only interested in conversations about themselves
  • you put effort into getting to know them, but they don’t seem to care about getting to know you
  • you constantly worry about their approval or pleasing them

no matter how much you like someone, basing a relationship around worshiping or trying to fix someone or fueling an inferiority complex is unhealthy and leaves you vulnerable to toxic and emotionally draining relationships. attraction is strong and we do dumb things when we’re infatuated with someone, but please remind yourself that your own well-being should always take priority over any potential romance and run far away if anyone, especially your crush/partner, suggests otherwise.

You have no idea how much this would have saved me a year ago sweet baby jesus BOOST!!!

oh god i should print this out
