The Oblivion Bound series is a dramatic reimagining of the Bloodbound series and the spin-off Nightbound. With the exception of one original book (centered around original characters) each part of the series corresponds to one of the BB/NB books. They do not stick to canon but rather use the plots in-game as a loose guide and include various original characters, plotlines, and directions taken.

At what point did Adrian and Kamilah’s relationship shift to the close friendship it is now? Did it all go down like in the book when they went on the ship mission during the Revolutionary War or was it different in your universe? What has kept them close through the years? I love their relationship because it had so many layers in Bloodbound but it has even more in Destiny.

ack nonnie this made me smile so much and today I needed it more than I can describe so thank you??? so much???

So in terms of like specific events that led to their developing friendship and close platonic bond, I haven’t thought super in-depth about it RE “is it different than it was in canon with the ship blowing up, etc.” I might, if I get to a point where that reference or flashback might be necessary or particularly poignant, but to answer it straight-laced -- I don’t know. Right now there isn’t a big change in that event, not that I’m aware of anyway.

But in terms of how they’ve kept close, evolved as friends into pretty much surrogate siblings for one another, kept each other strong, that kinda stuff, a lot of it is subtle but strong if that makes sense.

Like the immediate things I can think of right off the bat are

  • The sense of us against the world that comes into play during Adrian’s Trial in book 1 -- where Kamilah was still sort of beholden to her duties because she (at that point) had switched from one extreme loyalty to another (Gaius to anything but Gaius, being the Council) but witnessing the injustice of his pain and knowing he was just trying to be good and do good and keep the city safe was enough to make her flip the switch to saying enough is enough.
  • The Kamilah and Adrian flash(forward) scene in book 3 [V.iii. And There Was a Great Calm] where they are at the Awakening Ball post-WWII. It’s a lot of subtle stuff here but the implication I was going for was how hard Adrian took personal accountability and self-guilt each time he would come back from a war. In this scene in particular he can’t stand how wasteful everyone is being because he’s only just started to settle back into civilian life -- and Kamilah’s attitude sort of implies she’s done this before with him; helped him remember how to be a normal person and not just a soldier
  • Another reference to their past comes in the pair of scenes in Adrian’s memories in book 4 [Chapter 21: The Progeny] which are shown in reverse, but taken chronologically it goes from the 19th century where she approves of Adrian following in Gaius’ footsteps to the early 20th where she sees Gaius treating him cruelly for the same bright mind he was once beloved for, and that unsettles her.
  • But the last straw for my Kamilah, at least, comes in The Price, a drabble which was meant to serve as a Trinity tie-in primarily but ended up being more of a commentary on what Gaius was willing to do to secure loyalty. He has a woman Adrian is falling for killed and is extremely flippant about it to Kamilah, who is the only one to go comfort him. It’s a very “do whatever you will to me, but hurting someone I care for is the final straw” kind of momentum for her finally agreeing Gaius needs to be stopped.

Something that should also be taken into account is the opening chapter for book 5 [Chapter 1: The Refuge] where we learn that (directly different to canon) Kamilah’s brother, Lysimachus, is alive when she’s Turned. She gets so close to seeing him, even for one final goodbye, and Gaius stops her because, essentially, “I said so and you’ll learn to listen to me.” When she ends up finding that spark of brotherly affection in Adrian, even if it’s ‘off-screen,’ it becomes something she draws parallels to without her conscious knowledge.

I know most of this has to do with Kamilah’s POV on things but that’s because of a lot of what I’ve written so far, even without really realizing it, comes directly to and from her perspective. Now that you’ve pointed it out though Nonnie I definitely want to explore more of Adrian’s side of their connection. Both in reaction to these events above and others I’ve not yet come to a decision on.

It’s not so much a specific statement answer as what I hope is a timeline (is a disorganized one) that shows the progress of their companionship and events that triggered change in their dynamic. There’s still more to come especially given that Kamilah didn’t see Adrian’s meltdown in the King’s Manor and has yet to realize how close to the surface his lingering issues with and about Gaius really are.

Thanks so much for this ask, it was a lot of fun to dig into their dynamic!

are we gonna get a bound by destiny update anytime soon??🥹🥹👀

that was the plan, and then the universe sorta threw a wrench into my life and my writing has to take to the back-burner again

tldr i was wrongly fired at the job i've been slaving at for the last six years & can't even fight to appeal it bc of the toxic culture management prides itself in, & finding another job needs to be my highest priority before i run out of what scant funds i have left

honestly i debated opening up short & sweet writing commissions for a small ko-fi donation or something... but idk if that's still a thing these days...?

anyway, when i have financial and employment struggles figured out i'm hoping to get the gears back in motion. thank you for bearing with me until then

The Evening ― a Bound by Destiny drabble

⥼ Summary ⥽

While Nadya is busy making friends among the Ball's other human guests, Adrian and Kamilah retreat to the vampire-exclusive La Soiree. It is there that Adrian meets a pair of vampires with which to spend the evening... and finds himself caught up in the scintillating air of their natural mystery.

note: This piece takes place during Bound by Destiny, during the events of Chapter 10: The Cellar. It is not necessary to read to understand Book 1 or the Oblivion Bound series, but it does provide a fun insight into both Adrian and the original characters Valdas and Isseya.

By the third time Kamilah sweeps her gaze across the room he’s had enough.

“You don’t need to babysit me all night. Do you think I’m going to up and retreat the moment you turn your back?”

The look she gives him isn’t entirely unwarranted; a simple arched brow and the kind of breath that shifts her bosom at the top of her corset but serves only to be seen and understood.

For as long as he’s known her, Adrian has been fascinated with Kamilah’s skill of speaking columns without so much as an utterance. Maybe it comes with age. More likely it’s just something uniquely Kamilah.

“Give yourself a tad more credit Adrian.” She curls a single finger in the air; summoning a serving boy from out of his line of sight and plucks her choice of dark amber liquor from his offered assortment. “‘Retreat’ is not a word in your lexicon.”

The same silver tray is offered to Adrian. He declines, and the servant flits away.

“You know what I mean.”

Kamilah savors her drink for a long moment. “Perhaps I did, once. Now, however, I find myself in need of a translator where you are concerned.”

And… well, isn’t that entirely not what he was expecting. “What’s that about?”

Wallachia, October 1462

“TEPES!”

It is, by all accounts, a sturdy and well-maintained stronghold. With a multitude of vantage points for keen-eyed archers and terrain that requires training to learn; to master. It tests the mettle of the Voivode’s men even still. All the more advantage when untested feet scramble on a battlefield that fights them as fiercely as their enemies will.

But the key to a stronghold worth taking for one’s own is something more than strategy. Something far more subtle. Something that cannot be falsified or replicated.

A conqueror’s stronghold must be old. It must stand against time itself and emerge the victor; even across the battlefield of symbolism.

There is nothing symbolic about the very real, very physical manifestation of time’s arrogant wrath where his voice echoes cavernous through the castle’s old stone walls.

Old though they may be, he is always older.

“TEPES! You vile, pompous, hubristic pile of filth! I demand you show your simpering weaselly face before I tear your walls down stone by crumbling stone!”

just so y'all know, recently someone left a really thoughtful comment on my fic going through all the things they liked about it and it helped get me moving on actually writing the next chapter after almost a year of hiatus

Of all the freakin’ luck.

Cadence stares at her in mute shock. She doesn’t know why he looks so surprised — of course Marc Antony is here tonight. They should have expected this; when does anything ever work out in their favor?

The mounting pressure breaks as down below Vlad resumes schmoozing. He’s really laying it on thick for someone who keeps getting shown up by every new arrival.

“When one of the most prestigious names in our history dared to grace my halls with his presence I was absolutely gobsmacked. I didn’t think it could get much better, yet here you are — Kamilah, Adrian. Oh I can already tell we are in for a most exciting evening indeed.”

It’s the night of Vlad’s masquerade ball, the most prestigious social event a vampire can attend. An entire ballroom full of faces and names every vampire in Europe knows… and apparently Nadya is going to upstage them all.

A pretty big chunk of their plan relies on the staff of the Tepes Estate being just as snobbish and uppity as the man they serve.

So thankfully at least something is both easily predictable and surprisingly convenient.

The moment Serafine returns Adrian is immediately across the room and upon her with relief.

Jax isn’t even subtle as he rolls his eyes. Not at them, per se, but Adrian has nearly been wearing a trench into the hotel carpeting.

“What’s the worst he was going to do to her,” he scoffs under his breath, “give her a bad makeover?”

If the couple hear him they choose to let it go. Nadya, however, makes it a point to smack his leg — even if it does nothing.

“Are you okay?” asks Nadya. Serafine’s nod makes her smile and share in the relief.

“Wonderful. Then perhaps you can enlighten us as to exactly what the hell is going on.”
